SoV Interface Designs
  Views: 2048  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 26, 2008    Comments: 9  |  Bookmark

Here are some more interfaces that we have been working on, in the past couple of weeks, for any people who can read Chinese out there, please give your input to the English translation with the menu image I have provided.

I have included a map, login screen and interface bar.

Please give your input and tell me HONESTLY what you think.

EDIT: Thanks to our new staff, we have been able to produce better quality graphics and our overall team is more in gear now (working togeather). Yes, one of the MANY problems you don't hear about with developers.

0 Digg it    SoV PK
  Views: 183  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 23, 2008    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark

Hi.

Sorry I haven’t posted for awhile, I have been carried away with some side projects. Anyway I am back on SoV.
This week we have been re designing all of SoV's interfaces, a good move from our new arts director.  I have been helping out with the interface translation, which I hope I got right.

Anyway, a few new things I discovered when I was looking though all the new interfaces.

1. PK'ing: This is one of SoV's strong points, is PK'ing ability. With PK, you can arrange 1to1, team and guild fights. (yes, I know nothing too new).
Ok, we have devised a betting (Waging) system, where players can bet gold or items on fights, say you think you’re the best fighter on the lands, you can put your money where your mouth is. You can even bet on entire armor outfits.

Anyway, stay tuned for next week kids.

1 Digg it    Open Invite to developers at MMOSITE to join this topic / thread about developer issues.
  Views: 140  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 15, 2008    Comments: 2  |  Bookmark

Hi.

This is an open invite for developers on mmosite blog to join and discuss various topics and problems that we all may have.
I think it would be interesting to bounce ideas off one and other, help each other out, let the gaming community see how friendly and willing game developers are to making their games FIT for gamers, readers will see the nuts and bolts and have input in our discussions and ideas.

Maybe MMOSITE can make some kind of special thread up for us, is that possible???

Anyway I leave the door open, so developers, assemble.

Don't be shy

if anyone would like to contact me, please email: jason.richards@umge.com

MMO Storylines.
  Views: 181  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 11, 2008    Comments: 3  |  Bookmark

What makes a good MMO story???

For a MMO, the storyline is one of the main attractions to the game. It brings the players in, gets them involved. Here at UMGE we worked for weeks in creating a very solid storyline and we are still tweaking it. We have worked hard to link the story and the game, which has been hard due to changing quests, characters and maps. Our goal is, when you read SoV’s storyline, you know EXACTLY what the game is about, so when you play it, you have direction.

I myself LOVE Storylines, I am very fond of the back-story for EVE online. It draws me into the game and the world that is EVE.
Though my study of MMO’s I find that some storylines are so dry, I just don’t want to even play the game, it’s like reading a book blurb.

What do you look for in a storyline? What attracts you? What doesn’t?

SoV Interface Design, see what you think.
  Views: 224  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 09, 2008    Comments: 4  |  Bookmark

we have just had a new staff member on board with extensive game design experience. This guy has been working on our interfaces.
Yesterday I got to have a look  at one of the interfaces, I will  see if I can grab it so I can post it here, it looks good, we made a few tweaks and mods to make it look all the more sweet.

Anyway what I am hoping nis for abit of feedback on this quest interface window. It's all I have been able to get ahold of at the moment. We have had some delays becuase of staffing issues. But we hope we are back on track.

Anyway I have had some input from my gaming experience and from being a western player. See what you think.

P.S: Ignore the English.

Localization, Don't run away from it.
  Views: 208  |  Category : Default |  Post time : May 08, 2008    Comments: 3  |  Bookmark

People in the gaming industry know this word, 'Localization'.  But few follow it. Ever played a game that the English has been sooo poor, or the characters or graphics looks too weird? Yes I have, I see it all the time in games that promote worldwide. If you design a game in one country, this does not mean it’s going to work in another country.
Now for the examples and then back to my subject.
Crash bandicoot from Sony.

Crash U.S

Crash Asia

Now Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic  Japan and Sonic U.S were designed and created different, not the game it's self but the characters appearance. Sonic Japan looks cute and lovable, like a cute little bad boy. Sonic US has got attitude the way his hair spikes sit, the expression on his face, the way he stands, tuff and mean.
Same principals apply for Crash, Crash U.S represents attitude and a 'kick arse' appeal to him, while the Japan based Crash was dolled up, looking for soft and gentle.

If I was at a game shop picking a game would I choose a game with a cute and lovable char on the front of the box? HELL NO. I want something hard and tuff, a char that I am looking for in my alter ego to fill.
While in Asia people tend to settle for a more

Games help real life skills
  Views: 230  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Apr 23, 2008    Comments: 3  |  Bookmark

Hello once again.

I may of posted this before but I will post it again away.

MMO games are made for people to play if the people don’t like it, they won’t play it, therefore leading to a failed game. Through my experience playing all types of games over the years, I have grown fond of RTS games. Remember the Atari 2600?? Sure you do, CLASSIC. I got one of those big black ones with the metal buttons second hand in the early 90's when I was littttle kid, not one of the slimline update ones (worst update EVER). I still have it too and will never give it up, I now consider it part of the family. I loved the simple, down to earth design and the storylines with these games. The graphics couldn’t really sell the games. It was the gameplay that did it.
Through my love of console games having now many generations of consoles. I moved up to PC. Coming from a bash and smash console player to a smarter and wiser PC gamer. I moved into the RTS games with my first RTS being Red Alert. WOW!!!! I still think it is one of the best games EVER made and still will be for many years to come. Why? Because of its gameplay storyline, they way the game sucks you in, the cut scenes and just everything ab

hope everyone had a nice and relaxed weekend.

This week in the SoV camp we are still continuing map and quest creations and also doing some research on the international MMO markets, looking at such topics like localization (customizing SoV for different countries).
Today we have been working on some more artwork to display on mmosite.com and trying to come up with some wallpaper art too. As being Monday, it takes the crew a little while fire up on all 8 cylinders, including me. I already had 2 redbulls this morning.

Thanks again for reading this blog (for those who do). Keep your comments coming in, you can say anything at all, don't be shy.

Thanks.
