World of Warcraft Killer - The Hidden Threat

Category: Article Game: Default Posted on Sep 22, 2008 7:52 pm

World of Warcraft Killer. It's become an actual term in the gaming industry.

It's the Shangri'la of gaming, a mythical paradise that all gamers and developers dream of but no-one knows if it actually exists, or even if it can.

Dethroning WoW has become the ultimate goal of game development - it's the ultimate title that can be bestowed unto any game - but maybe we should take a step back and have a look at this ideal with a more critical eye.

Now, everyone who has had WoW negatively affect their lives in some way, please raise your hand now...
1...2..8...312... Hmm, that's a lot.

Alright, now for all the non-gamers who've had their lives impacted by a friend/relative/partner who has a WoW addiction, please raise your hands...
...Oh my, it's about the same amount, if not more.

Don't start throwing your rocks yet guys, I know you get awfully defensive when it comes to your precious Azeroth, but hear me out.

Did you see all those hands? Yeah, that's one helluva lot of people who've been affected by just one game. I should know, I'm one of them (WoW claimed my soul during closed beta... I wasn't part of the beta, I was hooked just hearing about it). My concern is simply this: Do we really want a game that is so incredible that it kills WoW?

*Waits for the resounding YES to fade away*

Try to think about it for a moment. Even if you yourself are not addicted (you're a liar btw), you still cannot deny that thousands, possibly millions, are. Any game that could possibly dethrone WoW would only amplify the negative effects being caused by this single game. Then the cycle starts again - What will be the WoW Killer Killer?

Ever heard the story about the little village that had a mouse problem? They brought in cats to get rid of the mice... then dogs to get rid of the cats... then lions... etc. The problem only gets bigger and bigger.

Now I like to think that gamers are an intelligent, insightful lot. I like to think that gamers are able to know when a train is speeding towards them and they're addicted to the tracks. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying that we should get rid of WoW or its eventual "Killer". I'm saying that it may not be the smartest move for games to go charging into this territory unchecked.

You may not realise it now... but there are a lot of lives on the line here.

Ok, you can start throwing those rocks now.

To be fair i don't understand why WoW is on a hype? It's really boring to be fair!!! I've played it before for 2months and reached a lvl 52 but in all honesty i only played it because my school friend was but its exactly the same as any other mmorpg to be exact. And WoW is full of wierd ass people aswel, they even have a group called ''WoW Backstreet Boyz'' u serious

The destruction of WoW is symbolic. It ushers in a new era in gaming. Would I want something so fantastic so incredible so unbelieveably addictive to come along that it would make WoW seem like Pong. Yes I do. Not because WoW deserves today but at some point it has to and will. The pinnacle of gaming cannot be attained there is room for infinite improvement. At one point people believed that The Super Mario Bros was the pinnacle of gaming, look how far we have come since then. WoW being replaced is a step forward in gaming evolution

If Everquest didn't go to the crapper....

I don't even know why WoW is such a big deal, I've played it and everything, but It's really not that special...

As someone mentioned before, the whole WoW killer thing has become a trend these days. Then again, there will always be competition so *le sigh*

One thing that has become repetitive is people blaming WoW, or any other game for that matter, for 'ruining' their lives. That's the equivalent to blaming a violent video game for someone shooting up a school or becoming violent in general. Don't blame the game, blame the person.

Nice Post.
Later Days...

I'm sick of seeing people blaming WoW (or any game for that matter) for problems that are entirely their own responsibility/fault as well, but maybe mankind hasn't evolved enough to resist something of this glorious magnitude.

I don't want to admit it myself, but when you think about it the WoW Killer is gonna cause massive problems.

Heh, I should start a raising awareness fund for "WoWK" =D

Well put, very well put. I have to agree, your right about having a WoW killer be just another problem in the end.

Well, this seemed like an interesting perspective. Usually when I read about "WoW killer", I usually think to myself that it's another dumb***'ed gaming article. But thankfully, this one seemed actually meaningful.

Nice article man.

Yeap! Its a totally hidden threat, Maybe in some (far, very far) future, it will exist a WoW Killer.

Hahahaha.... lol well today i started school so one of my friends want me to play WoW, i would play it but if i get the chance i would not get all that addicted, well, who knows.... -_o, but of course its gonna be a private server so it will be a "No $ Spending version",  we dont know how much skinny kids are now Super-Fatty guys, come on i eat almost like them but im still skinny but i do exercises so im not worrying about being around a wall of cans and delivery food blocks.

There was a video in youtube that made me laugh like hell, it was of some guy (of course, they were acting) playing runescape and how "magically" starts to play WoW.

And, from the time you wrote this and i did a response maybe there are more lives at risk or more hands are raising. xD
