I Hate Random Boxes

Category: Other Game: Lunia Chronicles Posted on May 06, 2009 6:48 pm

I'm not exactly sure how many games out there use random boxes in their item mall or item systems, but the two that I do play that have these features are Atlantica Online and Lunia. Random boxes are exactly what they say they are. You have a chance to get 1 of several items from the box but you don't get to choose which one. Sometimes you are given 1 that you can't even use. The following is my rant about it.

1) Its random!

I spend hours or days trying to get this rare box. The result? I get a piece of crap worth less than what the box could have sold for if I didn't open it. Chances are its also useless to you because it wasn't what you were looking for. In fact, its 1 of the 20 other items in the box that you didn't need and not 1 of the 3 you might need. Or worse yet, it might be an item that you can't even use. Its just a scheme to drive up rarity on items that aren't even suppose to be rare. On top of that the game developers like to keep it mysterious so you don't exactly know what you're going to get until you open it. Its just an incentive to get more boxes and open more of them. Either that or you just save your money and just pay like 20x the value of the box for the 1 specific item you need off another player to save yourself time and effort.

2) Its not completely random!

As random as these boxes are, each item inside might have a different rate to obtain it. There might be 20 items in that box but the rates for each one are different. That one that looks good might have a 1% rate while the piece of trash has a 90% drop rate on it so chances are you're going to get the piece of trash. But that the same time, one isn't really better than the other except for visual preferences. To mess with you some more, they make some boxes random and some allow you to choose. This has to be the most annoying thing ever. You KNOW they make most of the boxes random and on purpose they show you that not everything has to be random. Its fixed against the player on purpose.

3) I can't farm it!

One of the things important in MMOs is the ability to get the items you need. Random boxes prevent you from doing so and forces you to gamble for what you need and pray you get it. On top of that, if the item has a low rate, it might be nearly impossible to obtain the item. "Farming" might lower the price of items, but its essential to MMOs to deflate prices over time. Otherwise the price of everything just goes up endlessly and unless you're at the top, you can't benefit from it.

4) I can't use this crap!

One of the most annoying things about random boxes is well, random. If your character is 1 type and there are 8 other character types then it will be a pain to obtain the item that you can use. It also drives up prices greatly for the character types that are used more. The army of warriors who may be crappier than say the army of mages have to pay 3x more for their items regardless because there's just too many of them. The boxes give "equal" chances to everyone but its not really equal because there's so many of 1 type of player that the prices go through the roof. They can't farm more of that item to lower the prices because the randomness will prevent it from happening and might cause an oversupply of one of the other types of items anyways. Your only hope is to pray that you get 1 piece that is more than the 1 you're looking for and trade it. Either that or keep gambling on the super low rates.

5) I got the same thing twice!

Another problem with having the random items is that you'll most likely get the same item twice. When you have a set of say 6 pieces of equipment, you're going to need a lot of luck to get taht 7th piece to complete the set. This is pointless and might force you to go through 10 or more of that box to obtain that 1 specific piece you need. At the same time, there's also a chance that you won't get that item until the 100th box. Rather than put up with all this crap you could just farm money and buy it off another player. Plenty of games feature rare sets of equipment or collectible sets that are hard to get. Putting these random boxes in their place make it even harder and more annoying to obtain. There's a limit to how much crap people are willing to put up with and this greatly stretches it.

6) Gambling model

I know more than the 2 games listed above are basically fixing the odds against you in the form of gambling. Players have to spend huge amounts of money to gamble on items they need and hope they get it. The publishers and developers can modify and fix the odds against you at any time even for short periods of time without you even realizing it. Gambling is encouraged by all and suppose to be appreciated by all. But as people know, gambling are shams that only benefit the person who is providing the gambling service. It is always fixed so that they will end up on top. And to those publishers and developers who do this on their item mall, shame on you for encouraging this kind of behavior. Do you even know why the world is in a financial crisis in the first place?

I completely agree.... The first time I played Lunia and bought the Random Boxes I got the 5 same PARTS!

And I couldn't even wear them... Same goes for equipment Boxes they give you the excat same items most of the time.

well in FFXI there is no more 20 hour boss ( they reduced its stats of the boss and its killable at 2 hour at most )

I take dynamis in FFXI ) similar to raid dungeon in wow ) its suitable for 72 players in same tiems and a Lot of times Relic ( relic armor ) is not dropped

its quite a lot of luck ( and have good luck get a relic weapon in same time its take 1 to 2 years to upgrade it )

same goes with  AF ( 40 to 60 ) Now my warrior need key to Unlock coffer in some stupid area ( I said stupid and I mean it )

1 The key must be dropped ( like 4-5% chance )

2. you must find the coffer ( and its can take 1-2 hour to see one coffer )

so we can get very pissed off with random boxes and random drops also

keep in mind that these boxes are awarded once at the end of a stage by chance in lunia and atlantica. that means i have about a 5% chance of obtaining the box. once i obtain the box, i have about a 10% chance of obtaining an item i can actually use. this means that i have a 0.5% chance of getting an item i can actually use and a 0.08% chance of actually obtaining a specific piece i want. if you want to get real technical then the drop rate is about 1/1250. assuming that it takes 30 minutes for 1 run through the dungeon (most take longer) then i will have to farm for about a month non stop to actually get the item. unfortunately, first i have to farm the dungeon key which is either about 20 minutes for 1 key if i keep resetting the area or a 1/1000 chance from a boss if i want a chance at a permanent one. keep in mind, THIS IS NOT TOP TIER EQUIPMENT. top tier equipment in lunia? the dungeon is only open twice a week at specific times. go through the entire dungeon, successfully kill the boss loaded with 1 hit kills (you'll never win without the item mall) and hope you're lucky enough to score that 1/50 rate for 1 piece of the equipment. chances are it will not be your piece of equipment (1/9 chance of getting a piece you can use).

also that boss in FFXI, thats just for the boss alone and the players actually GAVE UP. that means after 20 hours they just stopped because it was too hard and long. at least for the most part, FFXI lets you quest for a specific piece of the specialized race and class equipment. most WoW bosses follow a generalized pattern which makes them fairly easy in comparison. also, you usually know which rare you can get from the boss. it tends to be 1 of 3 or 4 and the drop rate i would say is fair. maybe something like 1/20 chance so even with once a week, you know the drop rate isn't that bad.

What do you want them to do? Hand you everything on a silver platter?OH your party completes the dungeon and every party member gets exactly the item they need. I mean seriously life is "random" stacked in the favor of one thing but with the possiblity of something completly different happening, like the wether. When you open a box you have no idea what is in it and thus you can see why it should be random.

i want boxes that give random items to give items for a specific class only. this means if i pick up a box that i want to open, it should be a piece of equipment that i can use so that i'm not forced to do this over and over again.

In Twelvesky 2, they have scrolls instead, they're achieved through quests or drop once in a while. Instead of the entire random, they give you a random item around your level or sometimes materials.

I feel your pain, usually they give me trash, which I could of NPC'd the scroll for more cash though once in a while I get a rare mat or rare equipment. =D

Well you must be quite an impatient person to write an article over such a trivial matter. Regular dungeon runs in World of Warcraft easily take an hour to complete, and often players end up without winning a single piece of upgrade. Raid dungeons like Naxxramas have 15 bosses and take 25 players (structured & coordinated) approximately 8 hours to clear. So you can imagine having to compete with 24 other players for a boss drop. Each boss will only drop 2 or 3 random items out of their entire individualized loot tables. To make things even harder, dungeons in Heroic mode can only be completed once a day and for raids once a week. To make things far worse, almost all boss drops are Bind on Pick-up, meaning once an item has been looted, it cannot be sold or transferred to any other characters/players/accounts. The end effect is that it takes people weeks and even months to obtain a suitable upgrade or set piece. Yet in World of Warcraft you hardly come across anyone complaining about how hard it is to get good stuff.

thats just called ridiculous. yet at the same time it hasn't stopped 1 player from playing 40 characters himself (yes this has been done). then the 20+ hour FFXI boss is just fine as well. atlantica and lunia dungeons take an hour as well. WoW dungeons can be saved midway to be continued later last I checked so it doesn't have to be done at once.

 1. Sell whatever random boxes you come across, or if they are obtained from spending real money, don't buy them at all.

OR

2. Leave the game, join a better one with no random boxes, cash shops, or has a better random box system.

unless you can find me another game similar to Atlantica, then there isn't an alternative right now.

LOOL, u should never trust random boxes...that's how they make money on you :P however there are some guys who are really lucky to get what they want

Zanpakutou replied at 5:55 am May 07,2009
unfortunately, nearly every box in Atlantica is random (except about 3 or 4). its just that you spend 40 minutes to go through a dungeon and you get a stupid random box that has a 1/3 chance of giving you a piece of what you need.
