0 Digg it    BBC reveals kids\' MMO
  Views: 3  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 09, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
After all the ruckus this week over the BBC's upcoming games announcement, it's turned out be a children's MMO. Bugger.

Tronji World, named after the upcoming kid's series of the same name, is being developed by Cambridge-based Nice Tech.

There are bugger all game details at the moment - or compelling reasons why you'd want to let your kids loose on an MMO - but Nice Tech has supplied a truckload of information on its 'real time' development process:

"New builds are released and auto-updated every Friday, ensuring that no-one involved in the development and approval process is more than five working days behind", the company says. "Nice Tech believes that all parties should be able to provide immediate feedback, which is particularly important when working with such a strong client led IP". Sound like an erm, good idea.
It's currently penned for an early 2008 release, with focus tests due to kick off shortly.

0 Digg it    UK Charts: Top Spot Transformed!
  Views: 5  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 08, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark

UK, August 7, 2007 - Hello friends! It's Tuesday and time once more for the latest Chart Track official UK full-price videogames top 20! Hold on to your Pikachus though, Pokemon fans: it's more devolution than evolution for Nintendo's star franchise this week as the top spot is awarded to a decidedly less cuddly contender.

In Pokemon's place, there's yet another movie tie-in scratching the flanks of pole position in the form of Activision's decidedly disappointing Transformers: The Game. Less Autobots, more Autoballs, really.

There's a double Nintendo whammy at two and three for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl respectively, while J. K. Rowling's stroppy lovechild fiddles with his wand, still in the relative seclusion of number four. At five, Mario Party 8 breaks out the honkers to celebrate a chart re-entry and Shrek the Third slumps down one to six.

Proving that you just can't keep a fatty with a moustache down, New Super mario Bros. bum-jumps up one place to seven, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End performs a similar feat at eight, presumably making for an even jollier Roger.

Nine sees a fall of two places for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and, finally this week, Rugby 08 fights its w

The beta version of a huge Steam update that adds numerous community features has gone live for the public to test for themselves.

You can download the new update for free and get to grips with the new options that aim to allow friends, clans and tournament organisations to easily connect with each other all via Valve's online service.

The beta will allow you to create a Steam ID, which includes a photo or avatar and other profile details, create friends and group lists, chat with other gamers, and keep track of your stats. It will also allow you to plan and host your own matches, tournaments and LAN parties.

You can download the new beta from within your current Steam account or in any of the current library of Steam library of games.

"This upgrade marks the largest extension to the Steam platform since its first commercial release in March 2004," we're told. So get on it and enjoy.

0 Digg it    Hellgate Opens on Halloween
  Views: 4  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 07, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
Why dress up and roam the streets grubbing candy from strangers when you could stay at home, fire up your PC and play out your gothic fantasies in demon-plagued London?

That must be what Electronic Arts, Namco Bandai Games America and Flagship Studios officials had in mind when they decided to release their new PC role-playing game Hellgate: London on Halloween in the United States.

Developed by the minds behind Diablo, Hellgate features dynamically-generated levels, items, enemies and events; a story-driven campaign with quests; customizable characters with an upgradeable magic and skill system; and an online co-op mode.

Although Hellgate: London is based on their fair shores, Europeans will have to wait until Nov. 4 to pick it up.

0 Digg it    5 Things You Need to Know about WoW: Wrath of the Lich King
  Views: 11  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 06, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark

So after an agonizing week of rumors, it's finally official: the second expansion for World of Warcraft is called Wrath of the Lich King. As its name implies, you'll face off against the baddest Arthas, arguably the baddest Warcraft villain of them all, on his home turf: the icy continent of Northrend. Though it's a safe bet to say that what was revealed at Blizzcon was merely the tip of the iceberg (har, har), we know enough already to say that Wrath of the Lich King will be making some pretty key changes to the game as we know it. Here are the five most compelling reasons to be excited about it.

1: Level Cap Raised to 80

While you may still be reeling from the 60-70 grind at the moment, depending on slow you are, you should start prepping yourself for another 10; Wrath of the Lich King will see the level limit increased to 80, and no amount of pining to maintain the status quo will change this. Expect new abilities and talents as you make your way to the new level cap, and as before, you'll be able to solo quest the whole way through.

2: Death Knights!

Blizzard, at long last, will introduce hero classes to the game with the second expansion, and the implementation is probably not wha

0 Digg it    World of Warcraft trains terrorists!
  Views: 8  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 06, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
The frontline of the war on terror is about to move... to Azeroth.

According to Kevin Zuccato, head of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre, terrorists are being trained in games such as World of Warcraft to scout out simulated real-world environments, and train in weapons that are "identical to real-world armaments."

Zuccato told an Australian Security Industry Association conference that terrorists no longer have to travel to the target they want to attack to carry out reconnaissance, but create a virtual replica and rehearse an entire attack online. Bad news if you live the Tower of Azora then.

"We need to start thinking about living, working and protecting two worlds and two realities," Zuccato said.

MET police - there's your tip off then. Look out for religious extremists on flying mounts coming our way.

0 Digg it    Comic Con 2007 - Pirates of the Burning Seas Preview
  Views: 12  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 03, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark

At ComicCon San Diego 2007, I had the extreme delight of meeting Troy Hewitt, Community Manager for Pirates of the Burning Seas from Flying Labs Software. Now here is a man with a passion for showcasing what should be an incredibly fun (and somewhat addictive) title to the gaming masses. After talking with him for just a very short time, his enthusiasm made me immediately wish that the game was already available for purchase, or at the very least, in a form of beta that I could partake in. Much to my surprise, they were indeed sporting a closed beta program. I was given a key, told to email Mr. Hewitt to get an account activated after ComicCon, and I would be off to the races. There are indeed benefits to attending public conventions where game developers are strutting their stuff.

The backdrop of the MMOG is set in the Caribbean during the early 18th century, in a bold new world where one man (or woman!) can make a difference, and carve out of piece of that world to capture and call their very own. The game is broken up into two distinct combat forms: first person melee fighting, and ship to ship combat. You are, after all, a pirate - what other things could you possibly want to d
