Well, according to the Inquirer, it's called Hydra. The story goes like this: An Inquirer reporter is walking around at the Austin Game Developer's Conference, and he overhears two Blizz Employees chatting. Here's what they say:
Blizzard Employee 1: What are you working on?
Blizzard Employee 2: Starcraft II, and you?
Blizzard Employee 1: I am working on Hydra.
The above little exchange has fueled endless amounts of internet babble and speculation. What is Hydra? A new Blizzard IP? Or could it be a Diablo III reference (there's hydras in that game, right?) or maybe a reference to a Starcraft MMO (there's hydralisks or...something in that gamer, right?) or....well, the speculation goes on and on. And on. And on some more.

Allow the goblins to lend a wee bit of insight into this who speculative foray. We had the chance to interview Chris Sigaty in Korea earlier this year. Chris is the lead developer for Starcraft II, and he told us that the code name for SCII had been Medusa. Though it didn't make the transcript of the interview, Chris advised us that the name was meaningless.聽 It was simply a tool to allow people to talk about the project without giving away anything about it.
Our bet is that Hydra is exactly the same thing. It's a meaningless name, allowing the people on Team 3 to talk about their project without actually talking about their project.
