EXTEEL: The robot has a pulse! I check in a number of times per week (so you don’t have to) with the virtual ghost town that is the official EXTEEL web site. Today, for the first time in months - fresh news has appeared. It looks like this mech-based, multiplayer mash-up from NCsoft has temporarily shut down its message boards in preparation for the launch of another Closed Beta test. This activity, indeed, ANY activity bodes well for the game’s eventual release. Perhaps we’ll see EXTEEL on the PS3 one day. From my limited hands-on time with the game a few years back - I’d say the action-packed, arena-based gameplay would be a nice fit. Check in. “Don’t worry if the message boards have suddenly vanished—we’ve completed a message board wipe as we are getting everything prepared for the Exteel Beta. Yes, we’ll be going into closed beta again before we head into open beta. Due to some back-end changes all game accounts have also been wiped, so everything will be clean and new.”

HUXLEY: On August 22nd, Webzen pulled a press release out of their hats and announced a 5-day Closed Beta for FPS MMO, HUXLEY, which would begin September 13th. I predicted we’d probably see an actual HUXLEY web site finally launch to coincide with sign-ups. This has come to pass - sort of. Turns out the brief Closed Beta is for Korean testers only. Whether or not you can read Korean, at least the new HUXLEY site provides fresh imagery and hope that the long-awaited MMO may actually be released. One day. “After 999 lucky beta testers are selected from the official Huxley website beginning on August 28, the closed beta test will take place from September 13 for five days. For the first time ever, testers will get a chance to experience the city where the characters live and breath. They will also be treated to a variety of play modes such as team death match and radar domination, as well as the core systems, including the quest, not seen before in standard FPS games.”

No game has recreated the vast loneliness of outer space better than CCP Game's EVE Online. Now, thanks to a partnership with TransGaming Inc., the universe is about to get a lot less lonely as Mac and Linux users will be able to log in and shoot mining lasers at floating rocks endlessly by the end of this year. TransGaming is a company that specializes in portability products that allow for games to be ported across multiple platforms without having to redevelop. "We're pleased to extend our relationship with TransGaming, as the company's expertise allows us to deliver the most innovative MMOG to more platforms," said Halldor Fannar, CTO of CCP Games. "By integrating TransGaming's excellent technology, we are able to keep our laser-focus on evolving EVE Online, while simultaneously expanding the EVE universe to even more players." While Linux users can already play EVE using Cedega, the game will now be released the Windows to Linux converter built in. The Mac version will utilize the Cider portability engine. I just hope this doesn't ultimately result in less rocks for me to shoot at. CCP Games and TransGaming Partner to Bring EVE Online to New Platforms Reykjavík, Iceland, Toront

KWARI: Australia’s Micro Forté revealed news that they have been developing a sci fi FPS MMO entitled, KWARI, planned for release by the end of 2007. (source: blues) The oddly-named game takes its moniker from the Kwari company, who have contracted out the development of this unique MMO, which will be created with the BigWorld Technology Suite and feature the earning of real-world cash. I’ll provide more details when I have them - for now, you can explore the KWARI site. Cold Cash Killas! “Kwari has been designed with a singular purpose in mind – to give you the opportunity to translate your shooter skills into some serious cash. Everything about the game has been tailored to that effect, so much so that even an average player should be able to get ahead in the game quickly. Every time you hit another player in Kwari you make money. Every time you are hit by another player it costs you. Every shot counts. How much is down to the stake level you play in. But this is not the only way to win.”

It seems that a Hellgate: London fansite is showing a couple of screens of the character creation process for the upcoming MMO. Since the game is in alpha, we're not exactly sure where these came from. Someone may be being a naughty, naughty boy, violating the heck out of the NDA. We can definitively tell you two things: 1. The screenshots are authentic. 2. This game is, even at this early stage, impressive. Here's a sample, but hit the link above for a bit more.

TABULA RASA: NCsoft recently lifted the NDA covering the TABULA RASA Beta –and the first reviews have begun to trickle in. Long-time MMO blogger, Tobold has posted his thoughts on the game, which launches October 19th. Tobold says he’s been having fun, but doesn’t plan on making a purchase. Find out why. Michael of MMOG Nation and 1-Up says pretty much the same thing. Michael feels there’s much to enjoy within the world of TR, but the game doesn’t seem like something you’ll want to pay 15 bucks a month for. UPDATE: More TR reviews/previews from The Common Sense Gamer and Bildo. “MMOG Nation Quote: ‘In short: Tabula Rasa is a fun, fluid, and un-samey take on the Massive genre. There are a ton of familiar signposts for the Massive gamer, but they’re couched in ways that are going to feel just different ‘enough’ that people are going to take notice. As I mentioned in the VW podcast over the weekend, I have reservations about this title’s impact on the industry as a whole. I’m particularly concerned about the game from a business standpoint. Just the same, the short time I’ve had with this title has convinced me there are going to be a lot of people who will really enjoy this.’ “

Finally, after numerous delays, The9 have launched WoW's expansion, The Burning Crusade, in China. This happened yesterday and, as you might expect, the Chinese fanboys went wild. The launch is expected to be a huge success, make millions of Chinese players very happy, and further line the pockets of Vivendi executives with bright, shiny gold. What wasn't expected, however, was that a particular fanboy would show such extreme enthusiasm that he's level 70 today. That's right, TBC launched yesterday. One player achieved level 70 today.
In this amazing simulation, we see the Chinese ubernerd WoW player cheering after reaching his goal: Level 70 in under a day! Woot! In fact, it took him less than a full day -- only 23 hours -- to accomplish this mighty feat. WorldofWar.Net broke this story, which you can read right here. If you enjoy reading Mandarin, you can read the original posts, with screenshots to prove his accomplishments, here.

Tabula Rasa is a very innovative MMO. Brought to you the man who invented the genre, Richard "Lord British" Garriot, the game's a very sweet-looking sci-fi shooter/MMO. It's getting a lot of very good press lately, and the game is looking to be a good one.
And now it's got a launch date: October 19th. If you pre-order the game, you even get to jump in 3 days early, on October 16th. That means in 5 weeks or so, you'll be able to start shooting, nuking, electrocuting, and otherwise frying your favorite aliens into burned up piles of mush. What could be better? You can check out the latest on the game at the official site. We also strongly recommend watching the gameplay walk-through, hosted by Garriot himself, which will give you an excellent grasp of this exciting MMO.
