When Flying Lab Software announced Pirates of the Burning Sea in January 2003, the independent studio expected to be plundering the seven seas that fall. Turns out, making a massively multiplayer online game is no short order, and the Seattle-based studio has been swabbing its decks since. However, with the announcement this June that FLS had conscripted Sony Online Entertainment to add a favorable win to its sails, a release date seemed to be just over the next horizon. True to expectation, SOE announced today that Pirates of the Burning Sea would ship out in search of gamers' booty come January 22 for the PC. For those looking to cast off early, SOE also said that those who preorder the game can ship out 15 days prior to launch, as well as receive their very own in-game parrot, a weapon, and the game's soundtrack. Set in the 18th century, Pirates of the Burning Sea lets players affiliate themselves with one of four factions and then take to the high seas as captain of their own ship. Players seek to capture more than 80 ports in the Caribbean, as well as square off in both land and sea-based battles accommodating 25 scurvy dogs to a side. Lineage II producer Tim "Ornery" Tan has posted an article on the Lineage II official site detailing the future direction of the game. As the Fall season begins, it’s a good time to look at the changes that have been going on for Lineage II, as well as what is in store for the coming months. First off, I look around and see a couple of different faces on the team. Omega and I have stepped up to new roles, but bring years of experience on the project to the table. Alyra and Twinmoon are two new additions to the team that have quickly become accustomed to their community and marketing roles, respectively. It’s always a good feeling knowing that Spam is at his post leading the customer support team and helping to make the overall product better. One of our current goals is to interact more with the player base and get some really good feedback on the game and services of Lineage II. I think Alyra has done an excellent job so far in talking with everyone on the message boards and forwarding key points to me and the rest of the team. Another goal of ours is to try to be more open and provide timely information to our players. We’ve been using the monthly newsletter to give everyone a snea

This weekend FURY will reach the pinnacle of its testing with the first competition weekend of its Open Beta event - the FURY Challenge. The event kicks off with a bang - full-on competitions spanning seven ladders have players competing for over $2 Million in prizes. To allow for two full weekends of competition and mid-week practice sessions, the release date is now scheduled for October 16, 2007. Auran is opening up the field to everyone before the game even hits the shelves by inviting all players, from veteran FURY testers to one-timers to FURY virgins, to get out there and show their stuff! The FURY Challenge gives players their first real chance to experience the game the way it was designed to be played (and to win some cool loot as well). There’s no doubt that learning a new game can be frustrating especially when you’re faced with higher ranking opponents or someone who has been playing the game for months, but that’s about to change. Since FURY is meant to be all about FUN, Auran has been working hard on addressing these issues to ensure that every player, of every rank, gets the chance to mix it up in a well balanced match. More fun brings more players, more players imp

Richard Garriott, creator of the widely acclaimed fantasy role-playing realm of Ultima, light-jumped into the future with his first massively multiplayer online game project, Tabula Rasa. With his sci-fi MMOG ticking off its last few checks before launching into cyberspace on October 16, Lord British is planning to get his own first-hand look at the inspiration for his latest creation. Space Adventures Inc., a privately owned space-exploration company, announced today that it would be rocketing the acclaimed game designer out of this world in October 2008. Garriott, the son of former NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, plans to dedicate his journey to the International Space Station to scientific study. "It is my goal to devote a significant amount of my time aboard the space station to science, engineering, and educational projects... We need to be adventurous in mind and simulate our intellects to answer today's most daunting scientific questions and to invent tomorrow's technological marvels," he said. Garriott is the sixth space tourist to fly with Space Adventures. The first, American businessman Dennis Tito, secured a seat to the final frontier for a reported $20 million in 2001. Ga

Dear fellow pirates, due to some technical issue, the Inactive Guild Deletion Operation will be postponed to 2:00 ET (GMT-4) Oct 10th. Meanwhile, you could create your own guild as long as you could find five other members before that time. Sorry for the delay and thanks for your understanding! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About the Inactive Guild Deletion Operation Since so far there are too many inactive guilds in every server which have affected the creation of new guilds, the Inactive Guild Deletion Operation is aimed at solving the problem by deleting the inactive guilds at 2:00 ET (GMT-4) Oct 10th. All guilds with five or less than five members by that time will be deleted! If you're ready to create your own guild, please be sure to recruit five other members before that time or do it after that time!

Rumors of Google's plans to create a virtual world that rivals that of Second Life have popped up once again over the weekend. The company could now be collaborating with Arizona State University to test the 3D social network, which may be tied into Google's current applications of Google Earth and Google Maps. ASU students received a questionnaire yesterday, screenshots of which were originally posted by a MacRumors forum member, that hinted strongly at Google's plans. Specifically, the questionnaire intro says that students will be able to test a product that will be publicly launched later this year by a "major Internet company," and the graphic makes reference to 3D modeling, video gaming, and avatars. It proceeds to ask questions about students' involvement with social networks like MySpace and whether they have Gmail accounts. The social network referenced by the questionnaire is currently being dubbed "My World." As the Google Operating System blog points out, ASU has had a heavy affiliation with Google in the past: ASU was among the first to test Google Apps, the university depends heavily on Google Maps, and all ASU campuses have full 3D models in Google Earth. Officials from NCsoft Europe, subsidiary of the South Korean massively multiplayer online (MMO) game publisher, have announced that the company is to expand its offices in Brighton, England, following a major investment from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).
NCsoft has made use of SEEDA’s Selective Finance for Investment in England (SFIE) grant system to facilitate the expansion of its current Brighton offices and support a move to the new CityPoint development in Brighton, in two years time. The offices have already expanded from just three people in September 2004 to a current total of 112 staff.
A total of 116 new high skilled jobs are expected to be created at the European headquarters by 2010. The exact size of the grant has not been made clear although the money will also be used to diversify the company’s output further, presumably involving the creation of titles aimed specifically at the European market.
Geoff Heath, NCsoft Europe’s CEO, commented: “Brighton is a lively and growing hub for the creative and software sector. Our expansion will stimulate local competition and the exchange of best practice in the region. SEEDA’s support of our investment will hel
