With a string of new MMOFPS games having been released lately, it probably comes as no surprise for us to hear that Sudden Attack, one of Korea’s most popular Online FPS games has entered the CB stage and is currently heading towards OB. However, with so many other MMOFPS games entering the market, you have to ask the question, is it really worth redistributing an older game to reach a wider audience?

Joining the myriad of MMOFPS games coming onto the market is Sudden Attack, which is to be published by AsiaSoft games. Essentially, this game is hailed as the most played and popular MMOFPS for the Korean gaming community and from what I have seen through videos, looked pretty damn good, so naturally, I was stoked and jumped at the chance to play it when I heard it was coming to CB. Luckily, thanks to the good people at MMOsite, I got myself a key and before I knew it, I was fragging with the best of them, zooming in for head shots, ducking random sniper fire and seeking cover from barking automatic machine guns. After a few rounds, I decided to go do some research on the game’s popularity in Korea and discovered that it is played throughout much of Asia and is also enjoyed by the Japanese gaming community as well. However, what I also found were the massive problems that are now associated with the game. Though there were a few bugs, this was of minimal concern as it is always to be expected with games, but what was of concern, was the thriving presence of hackers and bot users. Believe me when I say that these guys can quickly ruin any gaming experience as they are often impossible to kill and will slaughter everyone on the field in a matter of moments. Why they do it is anyone’s guess, but I would put it down to their lack of gaming skill. Anyway, I then returned to the AsiaSoft version and continued sussing out the game and I have to say during my time playing, I never encountered any hackers. Not once and not on any sever. There were, however, a few slight problems with lag at times, but anyone who plays online FPS games knows that this is to be expected.

The game has something of a storyline which takes place in the near future and sees a team of independent revolutionists (silver fox) coming to grief with the United Great force (SA anti-terrorist police). To be honest, I didn’t really care about the story line, so long as the game was good. But, as it turns out, the latter fractions decide you team placement as the first (red) and second (blue) are split into even teams depending on which fraction to decided to aid. There were four types of game play; death match which was your standard two team, who ever gets the most frags in said time wins; bomb-defuse which sees you either trying to plant a bomb, or find it and remove it; item retrieval where one team has to steal something from the other teams base, very similar to capture the flag; and finally, property defence which is very similar to king of the hill, for those who know what I’m talking about. The first and last modes were the most enjoyable for me, especially the defence one as I tend to prefer either sniper based combat or heavy artillery (Rocket launchers and mini-guns and the like). There are maps for each type of game play and quiet a number to choose from when you get into it.

The weapons in the game mimic those of modern warfare and can be bought from the games shop by using either in-game currency or points which will be purchased from the cash-shop which will be implemented during the OB. The weapons and items are purchased for a limited time like in most online FPS games and do eventually run out. You can also only obtain the weapons relevant to your rank which goes up similar to a levelling system by gaining experience that is accumulated throughout game play. There is a degree of personal modification, but no where near the extent to other games such as Nexon’s Combat Arms.

The games graphics aren’t too bad and the sound and FX spot on. Game-play is very fast paced and more often than not, you’ll be killed without having even seen it coming. Don’t get me wrong, this game was a hoot for an FPS fan like myself, but will I keep playing it? Probably not. I mean, lets face it, there are heaps of upcoming titles that have the entire gaming community buzzing; Global Agenda, Huxley, APB just to name a few. Then, there are the next Gen games that have adapted elements of both FPS and RPG. It’s fun, but doesn’t have enough to keep me. 6 – 10.
