A game that swept me from my feet.... A game that kept me interested in MMORPGs.... A game where that there wasn't any cruel & mean gamers.... A game where we all worked together in order to achieve our goal.... A game that didn't have any mounts, cars, or any other means of transport.... A game that you have to survive with your party in order to make it to the end of the map.... A game where I played for 2 days straight....
The game I'm talking about is....
Ferentus
Chapter One
Alright. So, back in July 2005, I found a game while MMO surfing. The game was called Ferentus. I took a look at the screenshots and thought: "Hey, seems pretty cool, let me download it.", so I did. I patched up and logged in. It then took me to the loading screen, followed by the character selected screen. I took a look at the races and classes. There were 3 races, which were: Barbarian, High Elf, and Wood Elf. Then, there was 6 classes, which were: Warrior, Paladin, Archer, Wizard, Cleric, and Summoner. There was gonna be a necromancer class, but the game had shutdown before that update was put in. So, for my first class, I chose a summoner. I logged in and I was transported to a small castle city, called Rog. Once I fully loaded in the city, I took a quick glance at my skills and found out I already had 1 summon. It was a healer, which could automatically heal me when I had low health. So, I went outside, wanting to battle a few monsters. The first monsters you fight are small gray wolves. I went up to one with my default sword, and started slashing away. I killed about 5 more and leveled to level 2. I say "pretty cool", then I proceeded to kill a few more until I was level 5. Then I said to myself "Hm, I should start to battle stronger monsters" So then I proceeded to run down the field over to a wooded area. I then saw some small bear cubs, which were right for my level. I then proceeded to fight those monsters, killing them pretty easily. That is where I met a group of people named "IlldainStormRage", and "RobinHood". We then decided to party up and try to fight some silver wolves (level..8 just about, I was level 6 at the time), so we went, and start hacking at them all, killing them easily, as well. We said to each other "How about the mother grizzly?" So we went to them, they were humongous! My friend Robin Hood started the attack first, with a few bow shots. That's when the grizzly chased him, and killed him in one blow. My friend StormRage, who was a paladin at the time, slashed at the grizzly, but was killed instantly, as well. I was the only one left, and I ran for my life. The grizzly was chasing me, I was running, and running, and running. I made it to the castle steps, in which the Rog guards killed the beast in one blow with their spears. I sat there, thinking "Phew, that was close." Then I began to wonder if I really wanted to be a summoner. I told Storm and Robin that I would make a Wizard....
Thus created my Wizard legacy.... Chapter Two
So, I logged out. Went back to the character creation screen, and chose a wizard. I chose his hair, eyes, and height. I named him "WizardXVII", and logged him into the city. Once again, I added Storm and Robin. I also took a look at my skills, in which the first one they give you, is a fireball attack. I went up to the wolves once again, and did my fireball attack, in which it kill it in 2 blows. I leveled to 5 in a matter of minutes. I caught up with Storm and Robin in level, which was around 7, because they leveled a little and decided to wait for me. Now it was me, the wizard, Storm, the paladin, and Robin, the archer. We decided to stay away from the grizzly and decided to try out some small orcs. We went to the camp and started to invade. My fireballs really helped lots, and pretty soon we took over the whole camp. We got a good amount of gold and exp, and we decided to head back to town for some armor. Once we got there, I got the basic robe, wand, cape, and headgear, so did my friends. Around that time I probably unlocked another spell, but I cannot recall what it is. Anyway, we all went back to hunt some more orcs, since they give good exp when you kill them all. We did that for maybe about...an hour and a half, and we were all around level 12 at that time. Well, after that, Storm had to leave. We both said goodbye to him and then we continued to hunt some more. We leveled once to 13 and decided we were to strong for the orcs now and we were gonna try to hunt some black bears. (Stronger than cubs, less stronger that grizzlies). They put up good fights, but we were just too good. We literally hunted them for hours, and got to 20. (At around 15 they were too weak for us, but we didn't even mind, we were to busy just talking and laughing to even care about the exp) We both said "Woo that was quick) So basically at this time, it was probably like 8AM when I started playing, and now it was around 3PM. We went back to town, and got level 20 armor. This time it was an advanced looking robe, and a long wooded stick, as a staff. After that, we decided to go exploring. We went into the graveyard territory, which has a small chapel in the middle. Robin told me "You know who's in there right?" I said "No, who" He said simply "Lucifer". My stomach dropped, I was actually scared in an MMORPG. He told me more about him "Well, once you go in, you will see a statue, this statue will transform into lucifer." We both went in, and was surrounded by about 30 graveyard guards (Which were for like, level 30's) and then we both ran out, not even getting a chance to see Lucifer.
But after that, we did something that few people actually got to do...and we made a new friend as well....
Chapter Three
Well, after that, we just sat there, thinking what to do next. Robin says "Well, I'm tired of just sitting here, you wanna go to the end of the map? The mountain?" (That area is for people who are max level), I said "Sure.", so we got up, and started to go there. On the way, we met this young lad (I forgot his name), and we said "Hey, what are you doing here?" He says "Just fighting." I say "You wanna come with us to the end of the map?" He says "Hmm, alright. Should be fun." So he joins the party, and we proceed to the end of the map. It takes a good 25 min to get there (bathroom breaks), and we finally get there. It was heavily wooded, more like a jungle. I say "You guys ready?" They both said yes, and all three of us sprinted into the area, seeing Medusa looking creatures, and just running for our lives. We got past those, and we saw 8 story tall golems. All three of us got nervous and we all ran into a nearby cave. We saw them walking around (there were about 10 of them) Robin says "Who's going first?" I finally said "I'll go first." So I said "On the count of 3...1....2...3!" I sprinted like I was a track star, and ran right in the middle of the golemss (They can kill me in one blow), and I ran right to them. One of them swung at me, but I dodged it, and we all ran into a small area where they don't go. Robin said "You lucky bastard." We all laughed, and then I looked to the golems and said "One more run and we're past them." So on three again, we sprinted, and got past them fairly easily. We sat on the side of a hill just to catch our breath for a few min. We didn't see the Medusa's who were near us. Robin said "Hey! Maybe we can see a drag-" Before he finished his sentence, he was attacked by a Medusa, and he fell to the ground. Me and the other guy ran for our lives but were quickly outnumbered and killed. We all decided to spawn back in town. Once we did, we all just sat down and laughed. Now, it's time to skip ahead, when we're level 30, and we both experience the powers of PvP.... Chapter Four
Me and Robin decide to head over to PvP. (The PvP here is very different, no matches, no healing, just all out war once you step into the PvP area, which is nothing but a desert.) Soon as Robin and I walk in, we are bombarded with a series of arrows and sword blows and we all fall to our knees in a matter of seconds. We decided to spawn again outside the portal to PvP. We were expecting it this time, as we walked in, and we spammed every spell we had at every single person, killing many, but I was killed but a Paladin, but Robin got him. I respawned again and went back in, and then all order was restored. People didn't kill for no reason. (Usually people only fight when challegend to a duel. Note: You can't click their named and just say "duel", you gotta ask them and someone will countdown until it starts.) Well, I challegend Robin to a duel, and someone coutned down and then we started fighting. He hit me with one arrow and then I did my firebolt + fireball combo which does an easy 1500k damage and knocked him out in a matter of seconds. He said "Damn, you're strong." I laughed and he went to respawn. While he was coming back, I was attacked by a dog summoned by someone. I killed the dog with my staff in a matter of seconds, and then I chased the guy who summoned him (Yes, he ran). I finally caught up to him and did my firebolt + fireball combo and killed him easily. He simply said "Awww.", and went to respawn. So, basically, after that, we killed, and we were killed, everyone had a great time and then we decided to just start leveling again.
That was when the GM's logged on and said something that was heartbreaking.... Chapter Five
Well, Robin had to go, and he logged off, which left me alone. I was just running around when I heard GM's were in Rog. I went back and saw them. They were talking about how the server was going down and a new update was gonna be implemented, and all the characters are gonna be wiped for the new server. I said "Awww, come on!" They said "Sorry, but thats what's gonna happen." But they gave me some cool sparklers that sparkle in my hand. I asked "When can we play?" They said "It's downloadable right now." I said "Oh okay!", and went to download it. I did, and installed. Logged in, chose my Wizard, and went in game. I logged in, and went directly to a improved Rog, and now this version had quests! I got a few quests, learned my way around, and started meeting new people. Robin downloaded a day after me and he was trying to catch up to me. Thanks to quests, I made level 20 in about a day. I told him I'll just quest a little, and he can catch up to me easily. There was now dungeons you could go into and kill monsters within a time limit. I decided to do that until Robin caught up with me. There was a group of people there, level 25. I was about level 21, and said "Can I join you guys?" They said "No, get out, noob." I said "Alright." and I left. This is where it got funny. I'll just skip to where Robin caught up to me, We were both around level 23, and I said "Let's level", and within a day, we both reached level 31. (We did some serious questing) And then, one of the guys who called me a noob walked up to me and said "What the hell? How did you level so fast?" I said "Questing", and just walked away. Then me and Robin leveled to 33 a few days later. Then, we went to D2 (PvP area), and then that's where we met ClericElfPrincess. She was super nice, and we had a little inside joke which is inappropriate for this blog, lol. We basically just stayed there and did some PvP and fought a few golems in the desert.
Then I got the horrid message when I tried to login the next day.... Chapter Six
Well, I woke up in the morning, and went to login to Ferentus. The screen came up, and I put in my login information. It said "Server not responding. Please try again later." I said "Maybe I put in the wrong information", so I put it in again, and got the same message. I then said "Maybe it's down for some update or something", so I decide to give it a few hours until I tried again. About 3 hours later, I logged in and put in my information and it said the same thing again, and I said "Okay, what's going on?" I Googled some information about Ferentus and then found an article saying how Ferentus was shut down forever. I said "What?! I was just on yesterday!" I was just heartbroken, I was thinking about quitting MMORPGs forever. It was one of the first game I've ever played and the first game I've actually liked. Then, a few months later. I caught up with a few friends on Youtube, including Robin. Then, in Aug 2007, I found out about a small company called Eownage, who bought the rights to the game, and will be re-creating the game and it should be out this summer.
