   Noob - Killing User Communication?

Is the word "noob" killing user communication in MMORPGs? Well, take a look at the following to make that decision yourself.

Quoted from Wikipedia: "Newbie" can be used as a term to identify newcomers to a game, place, or organization. The variant spellings of "newbie" are also used, especially in online games, as a catch-all insult regardless of the recipient's actual skill or experience. Someone who acts like a "newbie," but isn't one would be referred to as one of the variant spellings. The variant "noob" has become common in spoken English by juveniles. Alternate spellings include "newb", "n00b", "noob", "nooblet", "nub", and the recently popular "nublet." These alternate spellings of the term, other than "newb," inherit the definition of "newbie" but are generally used in a derogatory manner to indicate uselessness because of the ignorance associated with being a newcomer.

In some online games, usually MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft or Runescape, a greater distinction may be made between a "newb" and a "noob." The common consensus is that a "newb" is someone who through their very nature of being a new player is inexperienced and naive to particular gaming mechanics or etiquette, whereas a "noob" is a player that is generally considered to be experienced, yet often makes mistakes or solecisms that would more likely be attributed to a "newb." The term "noob" can also be applied to someone who is experienced, but blatantly disregards rules and etiquette."

Noob

The game definition of noob (variant spelling, n00b) is usually someone, often in online games who acts in offensive ways to other users or people that surround them and refuse to go away, or stay by any other methods for the sole purpose of annoying others. The word noob can also mean in an online game someone who did something stupid, or asked an obvious question. For example, if someone asks a question answered in the FAQ or is common knowledge, others will call that person a noob. The word derives from the 'newbie' (a new player) and 'boob' (an idiot).

Choob

A choob is another spelling of "noob". It is often used as a cross between "noob" and "newb". So it is a higher level/ experienced player that is behaving/ acting like they just started playing.

Newb

Newb is also considered a relatively new person to a game that is inexperienced and doesn't know what they are doing. This term is often addressed as newb (Newbie). However, in recent times this term is infrequently used and has been widely accepted as being replaced by noob.

Nub

Nub is another spelling of noob. Sometimes, nubs are used to describe people who are worse than noobs. The general explanation is that a "nub" is so bad, that it is a waste of time to type two o's for this person. Therefore, the double o is replaced by u.

Nub Cake

A nub whose failures exceed all other nubs in their immediate area, thus making them the "biggest nub" or the "icing on the cake of nubs". They tend to not only be horrible at whatever it is they are doing, but tend to be completely clueless and extremely dangerous. The use of this recent variation of the term Nub has exploded recently in EVE Online.

Zoob

Zoob is another type of saying noob however, it does not mean beginner. Zoob just means jerk or idiot.

N4rb, neeb, n33b, n33b3r0id, n44b, n34b, choob, ch33b

Variations of newbie that many newbies use to describe Runescape players that are higher levels than them that the newbies don't like. Few experienced gamers use these variations because of how stupid they sound. All of these variations come from the MMORPG, Runescape."

During my MMORPG game time, mostly when I create a new character, I go up to someone and ask "Hey, can you help me with (insert problem here)?" And then I just get a "Go away noob", from the more experienced user. It really angers me because years ago, it really wasn't like that. (Well, the game I played anyway), everyone was kind to each other, helping each other out, and just having a great time. Now, the basic motto of MMO's are (I don't want noobs on my team), which is basically ridculous, since they were new to the game at one time. Game such as Maplestory, and World of Warcraft, have many types of people such as those; which is why I usually just party with my friends and play games. But it's boring sometimes, since you want to meet new people, but you can't because you'll just be called a "noob" and basically just stand there - insulted. Sometimes, I usually try to meet people my level, but the people I usually meet: Don't speak English, and don't even talk, just party, hunt, and then leave.

I thought at first u want to flame noob, which i read from the title, and i almost want to protest, but at the ending paragraph u said that u angry for being called noob,so i think i understand wat ur article mean. Do u mean there is nothing wrong to have noob in mmos and if there is really noobs then will it killing user communication? I dont really understand wat mean user communication, but I know that everyone is a noob at the beginning so why call ppl noob when u also have been a noob before? I just think those who called other ppl noob they are the real noob, because i know they are kid,and only a kid will do funny things like tat. So when i heard this,i just not hear anything.

I only call people "noob" usually to friends for teasing purposes :D or some annoying guy that looted/kill-stealed/ did something that is maddening. I really hate it when people are trying to get help, and others just call the person a noob. It's spoiling one's image as an experienced player! I personally will try to help the person if possible, or give him hints about it.

Sometimes during my free time ( in MapleStory ) I often go to Henesys Hunting Grounds to help power-level those mage-to-be/thief-to-be because during those levels, leveling is real hard. It may be well questioned about why do I bother to help, and it's self-related. I was a noob, and back then, training was real hard, everyone ignores you when you ask for help, ask for power-level, and just desert you. Only a few of them gave much of a help! I guess I want to repay by helping others.

I've just started playing Cabal recently, and someone just asked for PvP, I accepted, and he was like 10 + levels above me, killed me, and called me a noob. I'm very disgusted at it, but I guess that's how MMOs go, choose to ignore.

No defense, I mean, someone who is being called noob is innocent, actually I hold the view that this kind of ppl just wants to make their acts funny but unfortunately they annoy others, which make the real newbie of a game a bad situation when they really need some help.
