Aion Review: New Generation of MMO or Same Old Grind?

Category: Default Game: Aion Posted on Jun 06, 2009 11:11 am

Aion Review: New Generation of MMO or Same Old Grind?

I really expected this game to be the next generation of MMO. I probably helped contribute to this so called "Aion hype fanbase", but after playing this game i realized it was not  the groundbreaking, revolutionary thing that would be the "next generation of MMO", but instead it was the same old mechanics of every other post-WOW mmo out there. It does sets the bar for a higher for the quality games and offers a unique enviroment and beautiful graphics.

"I will start with an unbias review and will leave my bias opinions at the end because I am an *** "

Revolutionary Graphics never seen before

The graphics of the game are without a doubt what makes it the most visual appealing mmo out there. There has never been such a high standard of detail in mmos shown like this and which probably makes it the most graphically demanding mmo in history.

Just looking at the characters, scenic backgrounds and water reflection makes people go "woah **** thats amazing" Heck it even amazes me. I remember people use to say things like "mmos aren't graphically demanding" or "pssh i could play that on my 6 year old computer", well not anymore !!

Flying

One of the biggest appeal in aion is the flying aspect. You get a flying quest at lvl 10 and there is a time limit to how long you can stay in the air. The ability to fly makes it convenient for players and looks pretty darn ****ing cool (wings and everything). But the most interesting thing about flying is battling in the air. Thats right, player vs player combat.... in the air !! Sure you can fly around and in the end it turns into a hack and slash cluster. But nevertheless flying is pretty awesome and fun to use for exploring the aion world.

Interface and Gameplay:

The interface and gameplay  is very identical to WOW. Actually a lot of things about aion are very "wow-like" . But the one thing that stands out is stigmas. Stigma stones allow the player to use abilities from another class and is equipped in a "stigma panel." I am not sure the max stigma stones you can hold in your panel, but I currently can hold two. As your levels progress, you will gain more stigma slots.

Aion also likes to reward people who play or grind the game with something called Divine Power. The more you kill the more Divine Power you get (although i don't see what is so divine about killing stuff). Divine Power is required to use "super-skills" and disappears once you log off.

Best MMO of the Year?

Hey its possible. The year 2009 doesn't have the best outlook for mainstream mmos, but who knows what else could come its way and Aion is probably on the top of the list right now.

Why I am disappointed? (My Opinion)

Ya you probably seen on forums and stuff people shouting "WoWclone" or "WoWkiller" about this game, but let me tell you, this game is definitely not a Wow killer. I know there is a die hard fan base for Aion especially on mmosite (since it is very hyped up), but don't keep your expectations too high. It might be just all the hype but I really expected more from this game.

I know that people dislike comparing mmos to WOW but using WOW as a comparison is probably very well suited for Aion . First thing is that I especially hate using WoW terms but it is hard to distinguish the gameplay in Aion as anything but......

Next to runes of magic, i have never seen another game that resembled wow so closely. That is right. WoW and Aion would go hand in hand. But WoW would be like the little kid and Aion is like the big brother. Aion gives a more mature feeling compared to crudeness of WoW. It is strange that it is "like WoW, but not like WoW."

Actually just to show you the similarities i'll use Steparu's ingame footage he used during a "mission" back in april for chinese OB.

Final Thoughts

Nevertheless this is a good game. Even if the hype brings the game to shame a bit, it will probably be the best mmo of the 2009 (for now). I don't see this as something that will de-throne WoW, but it is a good alternative. According to NCsoft, the future of aion is going to be a p2p game (boo !!). Whether it stays afloat or not all depends on the community because  p2p is always risky business but if you can pull it off you make tons of $$$$$. Also it probably doesn't matter if you play the korean or EU version of the game (but the korean version feels much more "complete" if i may say).

I probably won't play it though because I get bored pretty fast (and because i am a bias prick)

I am not tryin to sound like a ****, and I haven't played it, but from all the stuff I have seen in the game play vids. It is not what it was talked up to be. Four of my close friends got it the night it came out, first of all one of them had to upgrade his machine to play and now they are all comin' back to WoW. So in the end I think this was a stab at making something better than WoW, but in the end it was so much like WoW, the vids look like it, that it is just a waste of money. Lastly, if it does become P2P, it is gonna fail, and fail HARD!

This was a while ago when i made this review. If anything I would say it reminds me of Guild Wars (which was the previous game they made lol). But I really don't know how Guild Wars 2 will turn out? I mean everything I thought would be in Guild Wars 2 is shown in Aion. So what does that leave for Guild Wars 2? I do hope they have a plan going for them and not just "our mmos are all somewhat similar".

Ok i dont own Aion....yet... but my girlfriend does, we are both long time wow players. I have messed around with it on her account, (lvl 10 assasin) the first thing i noticed was the difficulty of the mobs, maybe it was cause i was an assasin, but if you pull two mobs and weren't ready for it, u had better run for it or have health pots ( that HoT, not Instant), But i actually enjoyed the difficulty compared to wow's run in and destroy 30 mobs and still have 50% life left. It may not be A wow killer, but its a darn good alternative, and personally im just sick of the unbalanced class pvp in wow to the point that im jumping at this chance to play something new.

Ajatz replied at 2:14 pm Oct 26,2009
People who complain about unbalanced pvp will always move on to another game which also has a flawed pvp system and will continue jumping games =P (to be honest I don't like either games pvp system). Which reminds me.......time to try a new mmo for my next review lol

For me, the game was really fun, it was I guess everything I expected it to be. I would def. pay to play this game. Besides, I'm tired of these F2P games that have little to no support for the game at all.

Ajatz replied at 2:16 pm Oct 26,2009
Ya F2P can be the crap. Dungeons and Dragons Online is F2P but its extremely well done. It was a F2P system that helped saved their buts because when it was P2P no one wanted to play it lol

If anyone is gonna play Runes of Magic, especially on PvP server, prepare to pay cash shop. If not, you will be killed by 5-10 lvl lower cash shop murderers (in 3-6 seconds). There are many, many max lvl guys run around n towns (Auction House, mail box, etc.) and are very willing to one-hit every one without reasons. There are too few of end-game contents so that there is even a guild declare war to whole PvP server, a.k.a. kill on sight everyone, except those ppl whose lvl are lower than 15.

One more thing. if you are WoW hunter fanbois, forget this game. Bow/Xbow users, a.k.a. Scout, are gimped by now. Mages will 1 hit you, Rogues will backstab you in secs, and Priests are laughing and ripping you off while spamming healing skills.

Ajatz replied at 2:19 pm Oct 26,2009
That is one of the big problems with some F2P games. They want to make it so you have to buy to survive (pvp, monster...etc). The worst F2P game i ever seen was Flyff lol. "Pay for equipment protection for upgrading", "Pay for exp protection so you don't delevel", "pay for equipment protection for socketting", "pay to play in this area ...etc". It is a game that milks the community =p

By the way... You have violated the NDA for Aion NA.
This NDA will not be lifted until Open Beta begins.

Well I guess "over-hyping" always leads to some kind of big or small disappointment.

But still a good review, since it's not utterly negative or positive.

I'm still going to play Aion since for myself I prefer p2p MMORPGs and this one seems the best choice (plus I already played the china version, so yeah).

Ajatz replied at 9:18 am Jun 09,2009
Ya over-hyping does. I didn't want to ruin the review with my attitudes of disappointed for the game, so i did my best to separate the review and the opinion parts of the article from one another.

These so called "f2p games" always rely on thier cash shop and annoying advertisment to gan money. i'd hate to see some p2p gams turn f2p and rely on advertising.

lol if u can pay for something like wow i dont see the problem in paying for Aion..... -.-

i realy dunno why ppl want it to be a f2p, i seriously hope that doesnt happen cuz than it will just destroy the game .....

oh yea and "(but the korean version feels much more "complete" if i may say)." .....wtf? The game isnt even out yet in EU its in CB right now :D

so i realy dont know what you were trying to say with that :P

Ajatz replied at 6:16 pm Jun 08,2009
Yar i shouldn't have said that lol. Korean version has more content at the moment since it is OB but i shouldn't have compared it to EU's CB. Oh well we learn from mistakes.

Also I think f2p might destroy the game but if i was NCsoft, i would make the game "b2p" and then implement a cash shop just like Guild Wars

btw, the system requirements are lower than what they show.. the game runs me in max and I have a 5-year-old PC..

Ajatz replied at 9:46 am Jun 08,2009
Well excuse me, but if you scroll down the comments there are people who obviously can't play the game and its probably due to intergrated graphics.

In the end, I'm going to try it out anyways.

Face it, there is no such thing as "Post-WoW". In fact, there is no such thing as "Pre-WoW". The only reason I don't agree with any of these reviews is that people expect different things from every MMO where the basic idea is ALWAYS the same: grind. This is why if people are going to review games, they should point out the things that make MMO's DIFFERENT from each other, not how they're alike. WoW made grinding 100x easier with an absurd amount of quests and content. The only people have "promised" to make "revolutionary" games would be to splinter off into different games such as MMOFPS's or MMO action games...and then we have people calling those out because those aren't "MMO" enough.

Ajatz replied at 9:52 am Jun 08,2009
Maybe you didn't read the whole article but everything i reviewed on was what made Aion "unique" and "different". The opinions part of the article (which i labelled at the end) is clearly my opinion and should not reflect the review. Srry about that.

wow has already been dethroned >.>

and if u say aion is a grindfest and not a good game and a wow clone

so u r saying that wow is a grindfest and a bad game also.

"it was the same old mechanics of every other post-WOW mmo out there"

so what u r implyinh in this whole essay u wrote is just that aion is just another wow-clone

well dude if aion is a wow-clone with better graphs, nice skills (wow skills destroy the meaning of the word they suck...) wings and flying battles and whatever aion has...well then it already dethroned wow and killed it....wow died with the release of the lich king btw....

Ajatz replied at 9:55 am Jun 08,2009
well if you read the whole review, i talked about flying, divine power, stigmas and graphics which makes Aion different. Also your right about WoW being dethroned a long time ago. Aion is clearly better than WoW, but people seem to be reluctant to leave that game to try a new one.

lol play runes of magic over this... runes of magic sucks, people calling aion wow clone, when runes of magic is really a wow clone, and i dont call games wow clones, so go figure, runes of magic has horrible gameplay

i played aion for a week in the beta and quit because i didnt want to build up a charactor i was going to lose anyway, but from playing it, its one of the smoothest mmorpgs out there, if you got a nice computer, you will lose this game

Ajatz replied at 11:36 am Jun 07,2009
Yup. Runes of magic is defintely a copy of wow no kidding =P. I don't like using the terms wow clone and stuff either but sometimes for some games, you just got to use it :)

I guess after reading you and many other articles about the negative of Aion, probably this game is not worth me pay to play it. But if its free then its another story

I will be going to play Runes Of Magic btw, now still downloading, what to lose if its free anyway. I just love F2P games it allow me to decide if its worth to pay for it or not. Too bad Aion has failed.

Ajatz replied at 11:34 am Jun 07,2009
I totally agree. My review is more neutral but i believe the p2p for aion is a bad choice. It is not the type of game that people will run over each other just to buy. I also predict that NCsoft will put a heavy monthy fee for Aion.

i see  fu weak graphic card i can't play this game yet...... fUUck MY NOOOOOOO

Ajatz replied at 11:46 am Jun 07,2009
Ya i know =(. But you can get a Radeon HD 4000 series for 50-80 bucks which can play most games today . I suggest 4650 ($60 ish dollars Can) or 4670 ($70-80 canadian). They aren't power hoggers and can run on almost any power supply.

PS: If you live in the United States the prices are a lot cheaper. US = cheap electronics

yeah my pc also sucks for aion, but im going to work in the summer to buy a new one, so aion, you better be worth it!

btw i understand your point on the korean version being more "complete", that's what happens in most of the korean games that went to other countries, they get the updates first, and have better and fresh stuff, since the main devs live there.

Ajatz replied at 10:35 pm Jun 06,2009
Ya i know. Haha so many games are like that =(. Also sometimes the korean version of mmos ask for a korean social security number just to play them D=. It was like that for mabinogi when it first came out in korea, which was like 3-4 years before the release in NA (luckily i have a korean friend who let me borrow theirs =P)

awwwww i wanna start to play it as well....but need another graphic card...mine is toooooo weak >_<

is the game of my dreams

Ajatz replied at 10:31 pm Jun 06,2009
Ya it has pretty high system requirements for an mmo =). But i don't think you're missing out on too much. I am sure something better and less graphically intense will come out this year ^_^
