No More Fantasy MMORPGs Please!

Category: Default Game: Default Posted on Jun 24, 2008 8:37 am

Developers need to start turning on their creativity switches and start to move away from the generic fantasy MMO theme. There’s nothing wrong with fantasy games, but that particular market is so incredibly saturated now. As an avid MMORPG gamer I want to see new games that aren’t fantasy themed. Believe me; I’ve slain enough Orcs for two lifetimes. Games like Neosteam and Age of Armor are both breaths of fresh air in the realm of MMORPGs. I’m not claiming that Neosteam and Age of Armor are great games, but they’re at least something different.

Neosteam is a “steampunk” themed MMORPG. Steampunk may be a genre you haven’t heard of before, but in simple terms, it means a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, usually featuring large steam powered buildings / robots. Neosteam isn’t exactly a unique concept, as it plays like every other MMORPG, but the game does change the environment around, and that’s definitely a welcomed change. Another interesting game that I’ve recently played was RF Online. The game marketed itself as a sci-fi game, but for all intensive purposes it played just like every other fantasy MMORPG, but with a few distinctions; most notably, the game’s environment. The sci-fi environment and sci-fi weaponry was a welcomed change, even if the game’s core mechanics were almost identical to every other MMORPG.

Another non fantasy mmorpg game which I found to be interesting is Age of Armor. The game actually looks and feels like a drastic change from your average fantasy MMORPG. You actually get to kill space aliens with guns and huge robots. Unlike RF Online, all the environments and weaponry in Age of Armor are sci-fi themed. Once again, Age of Armor doesn’t reinvent MMORPG genre, but the environments are different than your average MMORPG game. The reason I actually went out and downloaded Age of Armor was because the game was sci-fi themed. I simply wanted to try a genre other than fantasy.

Unfortunately, with the massive success of World of Warcraft, developers will continue to churn out fantasy titles, as they want to stick with a model that has worked in the past, and the fantasy genre has been the most successful. I would however, like to see developers get a bit more creative, as nearly every fantasy environment looks identical these days. I’m not claiming that fantasy games aren’t good, but I would like to see some new non-fantasy games released.

I have to say Aion is the best fantasy mmorpg and i love it i usually hate fantasy mmos but aion is an exception for sure.

Blade And Soul is also amazing so fantasy mmos is getting better and better these years :D they went from crap to wonderfull.

Steampunk isn't a new idea. I'm kinda tired of people thinking that it is. Steampunk has been around since 2000 Leagues Under the Sea. It's been in video games before, take RPG's like Phantasy Star or even Gunstar Heroes, but it just wasn't catagorized yet. I'd rant more, but it turned into an article already <3

You know what? While I thought this was going to be annoying based on the name "Some rant about how fantasy is bad and shouldnt exist" I actually agree with you, I mean, theres very little in the way of sci fi, but developers are starting with it, and phantasy star isnt all that bad. But People could make something taking place in sci fi, or even taking place in our current world. Granado espada was another interesting non-fantasy game...well...it was fantasy, but not the traditional type of thing if you see what I mean by looking at a few screen shots.

Well ... the MMORPG Buiness Develops the Succes Genres from the Single Player Market , and thats Fantasy ( perfect Exampel Final Fantasy , no other Single Player RPG  scored so high) and thats the reason why they will stay with Fantasy MMORPGs till the end of Day till the End of  Time  till our punished Souls in the gardens of seth are burning no more ...and so on .

as long as there are the 4  or maybe most of the 4 classes(namely thief, warrior, archer and mage) , and if its point and click with target to attack kind of control, its the same to me

neo steam isnt new to me cause it has the 4 classes and point-click-target controls

to me, theme just decides the time frame and logic of the story line. as long as the above criterias are met, its a normal ol MMORPG like the others.

i take more consideration in control and manuverability of the interface and controls since the story of a MMORPG as we know it doesnt seem to play a large role...for now anyway. the fact is that MMORPGs are community games, you either gain favor or hate among other players and  spread your name all over the game.

those with differing views feel free flame, i dun mind negative critisizm that much

Its like tell them to stop making shooters. Peoples love any type of games. Like other type of games, fantasy one dont have nothng bad about, some peoples like it some no.  Personaly i cant wait for fantasy mmorpg made after old tbs and rpg that will come in 2009-2010 (best examples: Heroes of might and magic and Vampire the masquared). Finaly, more peoples have better internet, better computers, now we can enjoy fantasy rpg in much larger groups. Since 3 year ago game developers startd to implement more constructive things for players  in rpg games, when they realised that mmorpgs ar the second life for gamers,  Ncsoft was one of the firsts who made these step and you will see when they will release Aion, Guild Wars 2 and Lineage 3 in 2009-2010.

The best graphic and best story  mmo rpgs  will always be the fantasy  one and is easy to understand why. The only problem is that to develope games take time, work and most importnd, financial resources. Sometimes they must realease games in beta version because they got alot of problems (money, graphic outdated, priority, etc) and they cant go further (best example: LoTR mmo).

There is nothng more to comment, like other things, fantasy games have own evolution, the evolution take time and is based on experience, the experience is based on work, the work on resources, so pacience...

Fantasy genre is ok with me, I love robots but they aren't good with the average mmorpg fighting system, which is too cold and slow to make the game catch me.
I mean, maybe in the future we'll have patches making silkroad look sci-fi, making wow island similar to the planets of Alien, but who cares if the gaming experience doesn't change enough?

I really look forward to a game that has the combination of a physics engine and the periodic table. A game that can tell me that Uranium is radioactive.  A game that has mass, energy, and displacement instead of textured surfaces and clipping. So that I can stop lamenting over fugly game graphics.

I dont agree 100%, games themselves do need change though we - people who play mmorpgs longer than year or 2 have seen and slain billions and monsters, and what have we found there? nothing except different monster slaying woth some different weapons or spells... What really MMORPG`s need is simply to be more RPG, cause now you can get lvl only by killing monsters, and then you level up... what then? all your stats increase (not in all games though) but anw we need more RPG`ed games and i never saw anything like that in mmorpg`s..though there are few single player games, developers good take ideas from those

i love fantasy games.....the problem is most of them are pure crap, so we shouldn't stop making them and move on to something else
