Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) had an almost overwhelming array of interesting sights to see and discussions to hear this year, but one of the most interesting was the Q&A discussion with a panel consisting of some of the luminaries of the MMO industry.

Although the discussion was supposed to focus on where the genre is headed, questions ranged far and wide when the audience got going.

The panel was made up of Kevin Maginn – Lead Designer for Pirates of the Burning Sea, Matt Miller – Lead Designer for City of Heroes and City of Villains, Ed Stark – the former Lead Designer for Dungeons & Dragons and now the World Designer for an unannounced MMO, Chris McKibbin – Executive Producer on Gods and Heroes, and Noah Ward – Lead Designer for EVE Online. The discussion was technically moderated by Jason Justice from Ntreev USA, although since the crowd was quite respectful and things moved along quickly, he served more as an additional (if quiet) panel member and a timekeeper than anything else. Each question will be listed individually, followed by an overview of the responses by the panel members.

In his master’s thesis, Nick Andrew Quagliara says chat programs in massively multiplayer online games have not kept evolutionary pace with the games themselves. Do these chat communication interfaces support the types of interactions that users desire?

Do the current interfaces, which rely on prior experience with MMOs, inadvertently frustrate new players to the point that they stop playing? With supporting studies completed at the Human-Computer Interaction Design program at Indiana University, Quagliara investigates this conundrum.

In this excerpt, Quagliara explains how he approached the study:

"A three-tiered approach was taken to understanding chat communication interfaces in MMOs. First, a content analysis of chat communication was conducted utilizing Bales Interaction Process Analysis. Second, the chat communication interfaces of ten modern MMOs were evaluated. Lastly, a focus group of users was held to gauge their impressions of chat communication interfaces in MMOs. The result of this study is a set of heuristics that can be applied toward the design of future chat communication interfaces."

A new job posting at the Gamasutra web site reveals that RTS developer Petroglyph Studios is creating a new and currently unannounced MMO genre title, which represents the developers first stab at such a game. The job listing is for an MMO game designer but it does not currently appear on the developer's main web site. Petroglyph was formed by former team members of Westwood Studios (who helped to first develop the Command and Conquer series). Their first project was the best selling RTS game Star Wars: Empire At War in 2006. Their next game is the upcoming Sega published sci-fi RTS game Universe at War: Earth Assault which is due out for the PC this fall and for the Xbox 360 in early 2008.
