Players in Cabal Online can engage in PvP action, whenever and more importantly wherever they choose. May 05, 2008 Now players in OGPlanet's massively multiplayer online role-playing game CABAL ONLINE can fully satisfy their desire for brutal, no-holds-barred player vs. player combat. In CABAL ONLINE's recently launched War Channel, the rules that normally govern polite society no longer apply. Instead of being limited to civilized, mutually agreed-upon duels, players can engage their enemies whenever and wherever they choose. Each player kill in the War Channel will be rewarded with one Honor Point. "CABAL ONLINE players now have the ability to experience all-out player vs. player combat if they so choose," said Don Choi, COO of OGPlanet. "Many MMO players consider PvP the ultimate test of skill, and providing a space for unhindered PvP battle lets them really test their skills under pressure." While the open format of the War Channel allows for chaotic free-for-all battle, teams and nations can also join together to occupy cities, thus beginning on ongoing struggle for control. The War Channel lives up to its name, with the option of engaging in a fu

Konami has told Eurogamer that it will be announcing its European Metal Gear Online beta plans "shortly". Its comments follow (at a safe and undetectable distance) word earlier that sign-ups to the MGO beta in Japan appear to be inaccessible to those of us with Western-originating IP addresses. The full game is due out around the world alongside Metal Gear Solid 4 on 12th June, so Konami had better get its skates on. click here to find more info at Euroganer : Europe will get Metal Gear Online beta Metal Gear Online first Impressions

OGPlanet has recently discussed their creation of a portal for free-to-play MMOGs, similar to the casual portals that are available. Back at GDC I had the opportunity sit down with David Hoffman, executive producer for OGPlanet, a company specializing in importing East Asian titles into the North American market. The MMO Gamer: To get the ball rolling, for those among our readers who may be unfamiliar, please introduce yourself, and tell us a little bit about OGPlanet. David Hoffman: My name is David Hoffman, and I’m the executive producer for OGPlanet. The company is located in El Segundo, California, and we specialize in bringing free-to-play, free-to-download MMOs to North America. Primarily we’ve done this through Korea, by selecting high-quality Korean titles with a track record that have done well there, which also fit our marketplace here. We’ve been able to deliver those through our website. click for more details at MMO Gamer

During this year’s Gstar game show in Seoul, South Korea, Nexon has revealed to Gamasutra new details about Maple Story DS, as well as an Xbox 360 port of the company's Korea-only PC MMO Mabinogi, which was announced today. The recent Mabinogi announcement, which came on the first day of the major Gstar show attended by Gamasutra in South Korea, was relatively unexpected. The game is a more traditional, cel-shaded MMORPG with an interesting class system, allowing players to level up in branching paths with individual attributes. The game has already been out in Korea, but will be coming to the Xbox 360 soon – Nexon hoped to launch it this year in Korea, but is not certain it will meet the target. “It’s been under development for about a year,” said Kang, who added that it’s a rather straight conversion of the original game. “It’s being developed internally – but there’s not much more we can say at this time,” he concluded. Other details, such as possibility of Western release, are scarce, but common sense and anecdotal evidence suggests that the game will be released as a packaged product such as Final Fantasy XI or Phantasy Star Universe, with aims for release outside of Korea, giv

Rumors of Google's plans to create a virtual world that rivals that of Second Life have popped up once again over the weekend. The company could now be collaborating with Arizona State University to test the 3D social network, which may be tied into Google's current applications of Google Earth and Google Maps. ASU students received a questionnaire yesterday, screenshots of which were originally posted by a MacRumors forum member, that hinted strongly at Google's plans. Specifically, the questionnaire intro says that students will be able to test a product that will be publicly launched later this year by a "major Internet company," and the graphic makes reference to 3D modeling, video gaming, and avatars. It proceeds to ask questions about students' involvement with social networks like MySpace and whether they have Gmail accounts. The social network referenced by the questionnaire is currently being dubbed "My World." As the Google Operating System blog points out, ASU has had a heavy affiliation with Google in the past: ASU was among the first to test Google Apps, the university depends heavily on Google Maps, and all ASU campuses have full 3D models in Google Earth. Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) had an almost overwhelming array of interesting sights to see and discussions to hear this year, but one of the most interesting was the Q&A discussion with a panel consisting of some of the luminaries of the MMO industry. Although the discussion was supposed to focus on where the genre is headed, questions ranged far and wide when the audience got going. The panel was made up of Kevin Maginn – Lead Designer for Pirates of the Burning Sea, Matt Miller – Lead Designer for City of Heroes and City of Villains, Ed Stark – the former Lead Designer for Dungeons & Dragons and now the World Designer for an unannounced MMO, Chris McKibbin – Executive Producer on Gods and Heroes, and Noah Ward – Lead Designer for EVE Online. The discussion was technically moderated by Jason Justice from Ntreev USA, although since the crowd was quite respectful and things moved along quickly, he served more as an additional (if quiet) panel member and a timekeeper than anything else. Each question will be listed individually, followed by an overview of the responses by the panel members. Q: Why don’t we see more balanced classes instead of hyper-specialists? Stark started off by referring

In his master’s thesis, Nick Andrew Quagliara says chat programs in massively multiplayer online games have not kept evolutionary pace with the games themselves. Do these chat communication interfaces support the types of interactions that users desire? Do the current interfaces, which rely on prior experience with MMOs, inadvertently frustrate new players to the point that they stop playing? With supporting studies completed at the Human-Computer Interaction Design program at Indiana University, Quagliara investigates this conundrum. In this excerpt, Quagliara explains how he approached the study: "A three-tiered approach was taken to understanding chat communication interfaces in MMOs. First, a content analysis of chat communication was conducted utilizing Bales Interaction Process Analysis. Second, the chat communication interfaces of ten modern MMOs were evaluated. Lastly, a focus group of users was held to gauge their impressions of chat communication interfaces in MMOs. The result of this study is a set of heuristics that can be applied toward the design of future chat communication interfaces."You can now read Quagliara’s thesis at GameCareerGuide.com.

A new job posting at the Gamasutra web site reveals that RTS developer Petroglyph Studios is creating a new and currently unannounced MMO genre title, which represents the developers first stab at such a game. The job listing is for an MMO game designer but it does not currently appear on the developer's main web site. Petroglyph was formed by former team members of Westwood Studios (who helped to first develop the Command and Conquer series). Their first project was the best selling RTS game Star Wars: Empire At War in 2006. Their next game is the upcoming Sega published sci-fi RTS game Universe at War: Earth Assault which is due out for the PC this fall and for the Xbox 360 in early 2008.
