0 Digg it    Analyst: Casual gaming ready to explode
  Views: 6  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Aug 01, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
Casual gaming has arrived in the US, and is set to double its domestic revenues in just two years, according to a new industry overview from Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson. In a 34-page recap of the casual gaming industry released today, Wilson estimates that the US casual business will hit $725 million in 2008, up from a 2006 total of $375 million.

"We expect casual games to be the primary industry growth driver for 2008 and beyond," Wilson wrote, "as well as the best source of [mergers and acquisitions] and [initial public offering] activity and all-around favorite buzzword."

Wilson said the developing field of casual games is pushing the industry forward, helping the business overcome a number of different factors holding it back.

"Gamers are frustrated about slow innovation and the prevalence of sequels in the traditional console game industry, while nongamers are increasingly excluded by the increasing difficulty of games," Wilson notes.

In addition to fostering new business models like digital distribution, ad-supported gaming, and pay-per-item microtransactions, casual games have lower development costs and leave room for experimentation with new gameplay mechanics

0 Digg it    Ubisoft To Develop Heroes Game, Details Lost
      Views: 24  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Jul 27, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
Ubisoft has announced that it has signed an agreement with Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group to develop and publish a video game based on NBC’s popular super hero based television series Heroes.

The series, which premiered on September 25, and attracted over 14 million viewers each week during its first season, was one of the top 10 TV shows in 2006, according to Time Magazine. The show follows the lives of seemingly ordinary people who discover that they have extraordinary abilities, such a flight, telepathy, or time travel.

While no details have yet been announced concerning the upcoming video game adaptation, Christian Salomon, vice president of worldwide licensing at Ubisoft, notes that the show “lends itself naturally to a video game format,” adding that “there is no doubt that the game will appeal to both fans of the series and avid gamers.”

While Heroes marks the latest television property to be given the video game treatment by Ubisoft, it is not the first, with the company having announced in May 2006 that it would develop a game based on ABC’s hit drama Lost. The company today announced the first details of the upcoming title, confirming that it will not only come

0 Digg it    Second Life Shuts Down Casinos
      Views: 16  |  Category : Default |  Post time : Jul 27, 2007    Comments: 0  |  Bookmark
LINDEN LAB, hallowed creator of the Second Life virtual world, has announced that all in-world casinos and miscellaneous gambling joints are herewith to be shut down.

That means that the large chunk of users that enjoyed using in-world casinos and betting Linden Dollars on events both inside and outside the game world will now have nothing left to do.

Perhaps more to the point for Linden, the move will cut off the revenues earned from those owning Casino-style islands in the game, the owners of which are some of the top contributors to the Linden coffers through currency fees and land rental.

Online gambling is illegal in the States, and the FBI had been running an investigation into Second Life to determine if it was breaking any laws, so it's good to see that the war on terrorist funding has not been in vain. Obviously.

No word on whether this will appease the FBI or whether they will demand arrests of either Linden staff or gamers. But don't expect Linden to stand up for your privacy if they come after you - Linden's new Terms of Service states they will comply with all subpoenas from law enforcement to give away as much information about your as the Feds require.

Organizers Last Straw Productions have announced that the second annual Indie MMO Game Developers Conference will be taking place March 29th and 30th of 2008 in Minneapolis, for indie and hobbyist developers to discus design, development and production of indie MMOs and virtual worlds.

The organizers describe the event as "an informative, educational, and fun gathering of independent game developers from around the world who want to focus on MMOG technologies and network with designers and developers as passionate as they are."

Though a full session lineup has not yet been decided on, IMGDC 2008 promises "sessions ranging from game design to legal issues facing indie developers," and appearances by "industry professionals and pioneers, including Dr. Richard Bartle and Jay Moore," who will be focusing on "Industry Secrets."

Said IMGDC founder and director Jonathon Stevens, "We’re focusing more on networking and connections for IMGDC 2008. It’s incredible the impact excitement and dedication can have when building entire worlds like MMOG makers do. It’s only natural that a conference for the most passionate, dedicated, and excited developers would be a hit!”
