EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online science-fiction-themed game, which first went online in 2003. The game is different from the World of Warcraft style of MMOs in that gamers play as a spaceship and trade, mine, and battle within the vast universe.

In November, EVE Online developers CCP Games merged with pen-and-paper role-playing company White Wolf, and also announced that the two companies would be collaborating on making White Wolf's World of Darkness into a MMORPG, along with bringing EVE Online to pen-and-paper, novels, and card games.

CCP also recently appointed economist Eyjólfur Guðmundsson to study the in-game economy of EVE Online. The economist will publish quarterly reports on the state of EVE Online's economy, as well as providing ongoing economic analysis.

The game world is also different in that the developers favour a hands-off approach, with some players taking part in various unsavoury activities including ship-to-ship piracy--and, famously, a heist committed by an in-game guild, who infiltrated a company before virtually assassinating the CEO and stealing billions of credits worth of property.

Today at Gamefest 2007, 1UP is reporting that Microsoft will allow MMO titles to require a hard drive. They are asking that companies request a size requirement right out. If the requirement goes up later, Microsoft is looking to offer ways to have a "degraded" experience for some users.

"We can't guess how much space you're going to need for your updates, and, if anything's going to keep you from expanding indefinitely, it won't be us, as much as market forces," said Ian Lewis, software design engineer at Microsoft. "Feel free to require 30GB for your game; that's just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller."

Silver Xbox Live accounts can also access MMOs without a Gold subscription. All of the details are still being worked out, however, with the final guidelines looking to come out in first half 2008.

City of Kings is the second expansion pack to grace the popular Tolkein-themed MMO. This iteration brings substantial additions to the game's overall plot and storyline -- mostly centering around Amarthiel's acquisition of the palantir of Carn D?m and her subsequent search for Narchuil: the lost ring of power.

Other changes include:

New Reputation and Bartering systems -- Reputation allows you to earn positive and negative standing with the different races and groups in Middle-earth based on monster kills and quest completions. Bartering allows you to trade trophies earned in battle for rewards like armor sets or mounts.

[FiringSquad] received a press release announcing the launch of Virtual World Productions, a new organization that is devoted to reporting on in-game events in MMO titles. The company has 30 reporters covering events in Linden Labs's virtual world Second Life but also has reporters covering events in Blizzard's hit fantasy MMO World of Warcraft. Virtual World Productions is being operated by Live Planet, the Hollywood production company co-founded by actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Here is a snip:
