The fundamentals of game design for Massively Multiplayer Online Games are beginning to become fairly well known in game development. Just the same, there is still a lot of argument about what is and is not a 'good call' when it comes to adding features to a massive service. The way to go about making those choices, and a good deal of attention to the concept of a game as a service, was laid out by Damion Schubert in his talk at GDC Austin on Thursday entitled 'The Zen of Online Game Design'. Damion Schubert is currently working at Bioware, but is known well for his work on UO, Shadowbane, and other titles. He's a very recognizable name in MMOG development circles, and maintains a blog discussing many of the issues covered in his talk at the website Zen of Design. His talk surrounded the three experimental models for MMOGs he's had whirling around in his head for years. It also touched on general stray thoughts on the genre. They were based on his experiences, and his goal for the talk was to 'open source' his thoughts so that others could comment and amend them. The source of the name of both his website, and the talk, stems from an appreciation of Zen thinking. "True understanding

The world of EVE Online is in a constant state of transition. With over 200,000 players, and up to 35,000 online in the same universe at the same time, the game has developed a social structure unlike another other in the realm of MMOs.
It's to the point where the developer CCP is currently in the process of drafting a democratic council for the virtual realm and recently appointed an in-game economist. Where rogue players can walk away from online heists with merchandise valued at thousands of dollars in real-life currency.
To learn more about what CCP has in the works, and also just what's happening with the upcoming White Wolf MMO it has in development, I spoke with communications director Valerie "Pann" Massey, community manager Mike Read, and director of North American marketing Peter Gollan.
Shack: What can you say about the player committee you're in the process of putting together?
Valerie Massey: Right now, we've spent a lot of time working, just a very small team of us, working on just a foundation document. I don't know if you know this or not, but Iceland is the home of the very first parliament in the world. Hundreds of years ago, they were the first ones that did it. So

Autodesk has announced that developers NCSoft, Webzen and Gravity are using Autodesk's 3D modeling, animation and rendering software in the development of their upcoming MMO titles -- AION, Huxley and Ragnarok Online II, respectively.
NCSoft plans to launch AION, a fantasy flying combat and role-playing game in 2008, and are developing its asset creation pipeline using Autodesk 3ds Max. According to Autodesk, Webzen is employing Autodesk 3ds and Autodesk Maya for the multiplayer shooter Huxley, just as it did on its previously-released Soul of the Ultimate Nation.
In addition to its upcoming MMO titles Requiem Online, Pucca Racing and W-Baseball, Gravity is also using Autodesk tools for the upcoming sequel to major Korean MMO Ragnarok Online, Ragnarok Online II. The company says it will feature full-3D graphics and sophisticated character expressions in place of the bubble emotes featured in the first Ragnarok game.
Park Young Woo, Ragnarok Online II producer at Gravity, said that using 3ds Max helped in his goal of creating "cute yet extremely expressive and natural facial animations" for the game characters.
NCSoft art director Kim Hyung Joon also noted the broad penetration of 3ds

NCsoft announced this morning that Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa has gone gold and will launch in North America and Europe on October 19, 2007. The game first began development in May 2001. The massively multiplayer (MMO) game places players in a near-future storyline as they fight off hostile aliens while trying to gain control of the universe. New advancements to attract current MMO players include a Character Cloning System, which allows players to play different character classes without having to create a new character and a new battlefield system that depicts the combat of an ongoing war. "It has been a heck of a journey," said Richard Garriott, the game's executive producer and creator of the fabled Ultima series. "The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning. I think we've managed to do something truly unique and I hope that the gaming community likes it as much as we do. Now, I am looking forward to a really fun 'end of beta event' for our incredible testers, and focusing development on new planets and innovations for future expansions of Tabula Rasa." Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa carries an MSRP an

Vivendi's games business was the standout in its second-quarter earnings announcement today. While the company saw a 49% decrease in profits year-over-year as its Universal Music subsidiary and SFR mobile operator business lagged, the strong success of World of Warcraft's latest expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, strengthened results. The company saw a 6.4 percent increase in revenues over the previous year to €10.223 billion ($ 13.97 billion). Its first half earnings before interest, tax and amortization (EBITA) increased 10.6 percent over 2006 to €2.6 billion ($ 3.55 billion). Specifically, the firm's games business saw a 91.9 percent increase in revenue year-over-year to €119 million ($ 162.67), as World of Warcraft reached the 9 million subscriber mark. Specifics of the new talent retention span were not revealed, other than it being more expensive. “Vivendi demonstrated significant growth in revenues, EBITA, adjusted net income and cash flow generat
