Overview:

Well I'm going to mix a few things into this review, first I was asked to do this one and I will gladly share my thoughts on this particular game and review it as such. Secondly I hear-tell there is a contest of some sort about your favorite game or something along those lines. Well this is also my favorite game so here's a shot in the dark at that. In addition since i've done something of a review on this game in the past I will try my best not to repeat myself, but things have changed since the open beta to the full release so I hope this is refreshing to all those who have played, play, or are simply wanting to compare the game to others or itself at one point in time.

Review:

Lunia itself is a pretty well structured game and can actually live off the story line without giving into any real unique or ground breaking traits. Although this is a hard task to accomplish I am pretty happy that it did not try to do this. After all I do firmly believe that it could have, but a few new things in a game is rather nice. Let us start from the ground up about Lunia and go with the pure basics before we get into the heavy overall review that may as well captivate you, or not.

From the start of the game in the open beta one was allowed to select from three characters, A Healer named Eir, a Knight named Sieg, and a Wizard named Dain. At the release of the full game a new character was added: A theif named Tia. As per each one of these characters have their own traits, and fighting abilities. Now what may be a draw back to most is the fact that once you first start the game you can not customize any of the characters. Instead you have to work with what they give you. The reason behind this is because you are playing an actual character that is shown in the story line before each stage. The game is not like a console game and cope with all the changes you might make to a character, and splice it into the cut scenes. Being that most console games already have any alternative to an outfit that one would make if they give the option of customizing the character. Unless of course they just don't care and don't alter the scene anyway. Simple as that.

At the very start of the game when you finally make your character and select your server you will find yourself in a town filled with people that look either a lot like you or nothing like you at all. Now before you go off saying "I want that armor/weapon!" Notice the girls to either side of you have green exclamation points over their heads. This in turn indicates a quest is available to gain extra experience. Now it's simple read, and click interface for the quests so no worries there.

WAIT

We're rushing again and it's all my fault, I am sorry. Once you get into the game before you even notice the girls you'll probably realize you are in a fully three dimensional town. Don't get ahead of anything right here either it is 3D in the cartoon-ish sense nothing like Grando Espada, or anything of the sort. Simply anime-styled game 3D as you can see. Now why it's set for christmas I have no idea but I assure you this is a current screen shot of the game.

Moving on. The game is almost entirely played by the keyboard, very little mouse usage other than setting stats, and moving equipment around for any reason at all. Of course the item shop which is now open as well, but come on now that's obvious. Other wise you move around the area, and the stages by way of the arrow keys. The attacking buttons are A and S. The space bar is used for down attacks. In fact each character has their own unique way to use the S key, and at times just to make sure a player knows what to do they show you in the loading screen.

Now you can't really see what it says because I did not want to stretch the page, sorry. Well it does show what you need to know if you play the game, but you are probably asking what the loading screen is for, or even is this just the screen you get when you load up into the game.

Pretty good questions, but they have more than just one simple answer. This particular loading screen will not show up all the time. That character is Dainn the wizard and does not appear just when you use Dainn. The loading screens are randomized and placed before every stage, pvp room, and when you go into the town(server).

Ah yes I did say stage. Lunia unlike a lot of games is not a free roam anywhere and everywhere game it is set up in stages. And these stages wonderfully enough are set up in episodes.(I just love that). A stage is selected by either walking to the area where it designates on the town map or by clicking the little button off to the side when you are in town that says enter stage and then selecting your stage from there. As you can see on the first screen shot it is the first little bubble at the right side of your screen other than the item shop. Once you select a stage you will get a loading screen and there you have it, you are in. Now within that stage it is pretty free roam within boundaries. Confusing?

Think of it like this the world is a large stage, but you can't walk outside of the boundaries because the world is in turn round. As such it has natural boundaries that you can not walk or jump out of. Mind you that you can sure fly right on out of these boundaries but that is not an option for most people and it surely is not an option in the game. The boundaries set in the stages are usually large trees or some other sort of greenery, and in some case rocks that block your way from getting out of the stage. Paths are cut out like an adventure game on a console that you could just pick up and play from time to time or whenever you do actually have time. This game calls itself an arcade-style game and the paragraph above is specifically the reason why. Other than the stage effect there is nothing in this game that is like an arcade. Well...there is the fighting style, and since we are right on target with the pace of this review I guess we can get into that.

As I said earlier each character has unique reasons to play as them. The Knight would be a tank(MMO term for person who has the most life and highest defense, can take a lot of hits) and is a very powerful character. However in this game he is not terribly slow at all. Most all of his attacks are quick and accurate depending on the speed of the players fingers even though he is pulling around a large sword. Now the fighting style of the game is easily guessed to be a beat em up. That's right on the button. You run through the stage just like in an Arcade and take out all the enemies in your way. The variety of characters specialties is jsut the same as an arcade as well. After all one does not want to do the same thing over and over again with different characters. While the Knight has a specialty in close range combat he is perfectly able to fight at a distance if used correctly.

Eir The healer can also double her position and do damage to the enemy instead of just staying in the background and healing. This fun little trait is a wonderful thing after all you'll always need back up unless you're playing a stage that is far below you just for the heck of it. Skilled at healing, and long distance she also has attacks that are devastating at close range and can blow any mob back. Not including the bosses, because most all of them just will not fall down and act like they are just super human no matter who is attacking them.

Dainn the Wizard has amazingly strong distant spells that will throttle mobs and bosses making it hard to get close to him. Which is great, but the strange thing is that he has a pretty good close range combo that can link into all of his spells cast in turn knocking the enemy far enough back to cast more spells. This character has no real strong point in close or long he is more of a medium distance build.

Tia the thief has combo's that are out of this world. She can juggle an enemy until they are completely drained of life and die. She also has skills that require her not to be at a close distance such as dropping grenades. Yes she has grenades. Then there are the skills that get very close and help with combo's. She is the first character that is a one designated strong point. Hers would easily be close range, but she can fight at long distances. She is just stronger at the close range battle.

Now that you know how and why it is considered an Arcade style game lets get into what makes this game fun. First of all have you ever played a game MMO or not and defeated a boss only to feel the satisfaction of telling yourself you've done well and completing a quest? No one comes around and says good job unless they were right there helping you. In such a case if they were there helping you, sure it's satisfying but you didn't do it on your own. What a bummer. Well with Lunia when you complete a stage, and get a good combo, or just do a good job at the stage including killing the boss they let you know how they feel on it. As you will see below you get a grade and this can be satisfying or saddening. If it makes you frown it will also inspire you to do better the next time I. E. play the game longer. Brilliant! By the way it will also tell you how long it took you to complete the stage. Below is also the newest character added: Tia the thief.

If you are still saddened by the idea of not being able to customize your character from the start. Do not worry because the longer you play the game the more armor you gain and the more different you will appear from the others. It will be rare to actually find another character that looks like you. It was evident what person was playing what character in an earlier screen shot where the Wizard was oddly absent but it was easy to tell who was who in said shot because the higher up you get the more you can mix and match your armor.

Now you might be looking at this game right now and be thinking that it is an easy game or one that you can just fly by on your own. Sure you are more then welcomed to try and solo this entire game, but be warned that a lot of the bosses are not push overs. The stages are set through episodes and each episode has ten stages to it. For example you will see Episode one with a map that has stages 1 through ten on it labeled 1-2 1-3 1-4 etc... Well once you get to say 1-10 the boss will be outstandingly hard at the level one would be at. If you don't take my word for it, here have a sneak peak at the boss for Episode Four stage Ten.

The questing system does have a plot to the ones that you are doing. There is none of that "Kill this monster" without giving a reason. Some reasons may seem a bit out there, but they are reason enough for the thinking man/woman. That is just how it is, so for those of you who don't like doing mindless quests or quests that have no story rather then there you have it a good quest with a little side story. Also in doing quests you can obtain access to other areas previously unavailable before.

As for the community it has it's bad apples in it, but it also is mainly full of people who really want to have fun with the game and or goof around in the process. It is a really wonderful community in my personal view the worse thing I have come across within the game is either people spelling things with "U" or something like that so many abbreviations that I am shocked they don't abbreviate the world abbreviation. Or like in all games there are rude higher up people, but in all honesty that is not that evident in this game.

If you are the type of person who worries about messing up your character by dealing with stats and setting them on the wrong thing. You also don't have to worry about that in this game. They do the stats for you. The gear you wear however does up or down your stats depending. You can easily get around this by fortifying your weapons, and armor(which is upgrading pretty much). Also you can get them graded which unleashes a new stat on the item.

The party system is pretty simple to understand. You can press P to open it up and create your own party, set what level you want to be accepted into it and title it with the stage you are playing, or stages, and finally start the stage yourself. It is also pretty easy to find a party. Just click the party list and join one that appears to be what you're looking for.

As I said the stages are set up in stages and those stages in episodes. As of now there are four episodes and then after that there are the Legend stages. Which are just a repeat of previous stages with added difficulty, different bosses, larger, and much harder mobs. While you progress through the stages in the game it unveils more of the story through a comic like cut scene. You can easily skip this if you are in a hurry and just want to get through the stage and go back to watch the scene over no worries there.

I wont rate this game, but this is all I have to say about it as far as a review goes.

Now as for why I like this game.

My View:

Well to be honest I really don't like using the mouse to get around a lot, and on top of that Bunny share's this outlook with me so it makes the game a lot more fun when it's one we can play together. Not to mention it is both of our favorite MMO. However that did not answer the question. To be blunt this game contains everything I look for in any MMORPG. The graphics are nice, but not so heavy duty that it takes up a great deal of space on my computer or requires me to get a new video card(which I will probably never do anyway). The story is enchanting and realistic, well realistic as a fantasy world can be. Although it gears toward a younger audience it captivates me in a way that some times I will rush through a stage just to see what happened to our heroes.
The game plays well and the controls are very easy to get into and over all it's a nice game to sit down and play in my spare time. I can pull up a nice cup of coffee lean over and give my darling a kiss, open the laptop and with a smile say lets play some lunia. It draws the stress away from daily life just like any game should! I highly suggest it for those of you who play games purely for enjoyment I am sure you will like this game even if you don't like this genre. Is it the best game out there? Probably not but it sure as hell is my favorite!
