This article, or blog rather is being made to educate those of you who are still very new to the whole MMOG world. I hope that it helps whoever reads this out if they are in fact a new player. For those of you who are well versed in MMOG's this may still bring a new light on things if you have simply over looked what you thought to be right or true. I am not saying anything in this blog that has not already been brought to the light. At least I do not think that none of this has been kept aside from the general public. I do however wish to inform all of you of what I know about this particular topic.

Now I will not sit here and tell you that there is some underlined truth behind every single game that comes out and is Free to Play or in fact that there is a certain reason that they are made this way. Well to be honest they are made that way in the idea that the company can bring in more money with the aspect, and title of a game being Free to play. That sentence alone should stir up questions for you in itself. A company making money of a "Free" to play game? It's simple really as I am sure you all know every free to play game that has been made has instituted some sort of cash shop in ways of bringing in some money. This is to keep the game going and manifest better quality as well as pay the staff. After all you may think it's all volunteer work, but in fact most of it is not. After all these people working on the games are doing it as their job if not their own lively hood and career. As such they have to bring in some sort of income or else it would not be worth it at all. This is not greed mind you but the law of supply and demand.

Regardless the meet of this article is to get the point across that a game with the sub text Free to Play actually means that it is the default option no more and no less. Where as a game that is P2P or Pay to Play is a game where one has to pay out right for the game, and continue to pay for it in increments throughout the year usually once a month. As such Free to Play becomes a great deal more popular but the facts are you may be spending more on a free to play game in a year than you do on a Pay to play game.

How is this math figured you may ask. Generally speaking the cash shops in the Free to Play game bracket don't carry many items that are long lasting or rather permanent. As such in order to keep these useful items or in some cases skills one must continue to pay actual money to gain these items. This is all common knowledge of course, but in a Pay to Play game the rate of which you spend is set where as in a Free to Play game you may see a set of items you "just have to have" and end up spending close to a hundred dollars in one sitting in their respective cash shop. Now this is good for the game and may be good for you if you have the money to spend on something like this and it is your passion to play games then go for it by all means don't let anything hold you back on that note just have a blast. However this is also how the sub text Free to Play gets you.

It's no trick because it is commonly known that cash shops exist on these platforms of games. The real pull comes in when you stop realizing that you are spending so much money so quickly on this supposed "free" game, but possibly can not stand the idea of paying monthly. It's a superb plot generated by those who initiated the first Free to play game including a cash shop. I have no idea what game it was but it was still genius.

The truth behind it all: A free to play game is free in the aspect that you can make it free. However it can at the same time be more expensive than a Pay to play game due to the cash shop.

A cash shop for a brief explanation is an area in the game where you can spend actual money to buy items, gears, pets, double experience, and other things for whatever character you have at the time, or even characters.

So when deciding on a game one must make sure that they know what they are doing, because in most cases a Free to play game that is completely released with a full embodied cash shop will more then likely give you a run for your money. While at the same time one can not say that a Pay to Play game will cost less even if the Free 2 play game has a good cash shop.

Understand this as well I am pretty sure that both types of games have a cash shop available so beware.

I do not mean to scare any of you newcomers to games or those who have not really thought about this topic by saying what I have. However I wish to convey that a Free to play game means that it CAN be Free, but you can also pay for certain things. So worry not.

Another hidden aspect of most free to play games is the grind.

Grind: To constantly be forced to kill monsters in order to gain experience toward leveling ones character

The truth behind "The Grind": It is evident in almost every single Free to play game that one plays, and it is hard to get by. Most of the time the community can help you ignore the grind very easily if they are in fact a fun loving or interactive community.

Grind can be the most annoying thing in the game or the easiest to ignore the trick behind this is to play with a friend or to make a friend in order to play with.

~joy to you all

It's true, but the thing is people want to play games, which sometimes end up being P2P, but if it's F2P there is usally a Cash Shop out there somewhere. Now the thing about the cash shop is that it's usually there to give people advantages, these are the 'bad' kind of cash shops, because it makes players uneven. Most games with cash shops are out there to make serious money, some are just casual. But the thing is, would you play a F2P game with an optional cash shop even though you have an disadvantage? Why not, as long as you arent competing with the people who do use cash shop.

Sorry double post. For wat i think, we can have ALL the fun part in p2p game, there is no one force u to pay ur p2p game like ur monthly bill, u can stop anytime u want, and when the time u come back, u still can chase the dropback to reach the 'latest'. But in f2p game, I never can have ALL the fun in the game, becoz everytime ppl buy gears from cashshop and i still use the 'free' item in the game that makes me look stupid and outdated, those who buy cashshop can go like speed of light to reach high lvl while im still using my toothpick to tick mob one by one...so wheres the fun in f2p if everything has to be cash? if things go like this i rather play p2p games so we are all the same and fair...

Hi, I like your article, =P
I don't play F2P games often, because it actually cost much more than P2P games =o

Good read; I agree with everything you've said.
Let me first say Ive played GuildWars since it was first released in 2005 or something and stopped playing because of lack of content. I recently, within the last few months, have just gotten into F2P games, but after what ive experienced with DOMO, I am eagerly waiting to go back to a P2P game (Aion and Huxley sometime this year)
DOMO is the only F2P game that actually got me playing for more than a few days. I actually have been playing for a little over a month now, but I will stop soon. The main reason is because the company pushes you to buy these friggin cash items. These cash shop items have no stat increases, they just look different than the regular armor. The problem here is that you will see that same cash shop armor often, which makes it pointless to me. Major reason why I am hating DOMO is the grinding. The monsters dont drop rare weapons, armor or items, so it will make you feel like such a tool. Not only that, monsters rarely drop Pupu coupons which are really the only type of money in this game. Grinding will wear out your armor and weapons, so guess what? Youll have to spend even more money on new gear.
