Clones oh a world for clones

boomp3.comIt has come to my attention, or rather the attention of the masses that there have been a lot of games put out said to be "clones" or generally "copies" of another game. Usually it is said to be a copy of whatever game is first known so it could be a complete matter of opinion in fact this whole topic is a matter of opinion. The reasoning behind that is simple: if a game was an actual direct copy of another then they would be facing some serious legal issues. Sure they could get around it by changing certain things but as vague and at the same time strict copyright laws are it's rather hard to do that.

First things first let us cover that oh so talked about issue of Maple story having five or six other clones out there. The problem with this is that a lot of people believe that maple story originated the 2D side scrolling genre. Well I hate to tell all of you maple lovers this but as far as I know Ghost online came first, but you hardly ever hear of someone claiming Maple to be a copy of ghost. That is mainly because Maple story is more popular now due to a lot of reasons. All in all it is a good game minus the grind, but it is not the father of all 2D genre's.

Latale:

Windslayer:

Not to mention the claim that not only the graphics are ripped from maple but the UI (user interface I.E. controls) were taken from it as well. Sorry but to say that would also be the same as saying that for example Asda story is the a rip off of Deco Online because they both use point and click UI and the graphics are both 3D. Basically as far as maple goes it is mainly a popularity thing: so many people love maple that they defend it when a new 2D game(or old that is redone and globalized) comes out they say it's a copy nothing more. Sure there are similarities but they are not directly the same. It is easy to say they are identical but that is nowhere near the case. Most 2D side scrolling games will be related in some form because they are in fact in the same genre as such they are bound to be alike in some ways. Be it graphics, background, UI etc...it's just bound to happen. Much like point and click games are bound to be related in some ways be it what was listed above or something else.

As for a solution, I say let it resolve itself. After all no one complained when K-mart was big and was in competition with Wal-Mart they both after all do the exact same thing: Sell all types of items from clothing to food. In time one pretty much eliminated the other by letting things run their natural course. Still they were so much a like but never once did I hear someone say that one of them was a copy or clone of the other. The two stores were respected as their own industries for the time they both stood strong so why not allow games to stand strong on their own even if they are a lot a like. So in essence my solution would be to shut up and deal with it however harsh that may be.

There are some things that a player may wish to be in one game, and find in another game that is almost exactly like the first as I have mentioned in a previous article. This could be a reason why a lot of games are made similar to draw in the same crowd but to give that extra push toward their game because they have something that people have been craving for so long. It appears not a lot of people think of this or they just choose not to voice their thoughts on the matter. Look at all the medieval games that are out and have been put out in fact look at Diablo and Diablo 2 for perfect examples. There have been games put out that follow the same format with classes and such example Never Winter Nights which is an awesome game, but no one calls those games clones they simply say that Diablo is either better, awesome, or they prefer the other game. This whole cloning business has become a text based he said she said sort of thing that has gotten too far out of hand and it's aggrivating, because it can detour other game makers from publishing a game because they believe there are so many people who will think their game is too much like another one. Why would they not put it out in such a case: Fear of losing money obviously.

It's simple stuff people and it's not rocket science, all we have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the games that are coming our way. If they resemble another game that is already put out decide which one you like better and play it, but geeze don't complain about the similarities. To be frank with all of you if there were not games out that resembled each other most people wouldn't have that expansive of a game list that they play because it would all be too different that they probably wouldn't even give the game a chance.

Going back on what was earlier mentioned about the UI and graphics being the main cause of the whole "clone" theory I challenge any of you to go over the games you have played and think back on them. Could you not by using the rationality of those that say pretty much every 2D sidescroller is a Maple clone, in turn say that if not all most of the point and click games out there are either clones of one another or resemble each other greatly. Now I'm not saying a game like Corum resembles Flyff, but the point is that some point and click games will be closely related. Especially when it comes to game genre

For example Exteel and Age of armor the two are in the same genre but no one calls them clones of one another because they stand alone in their own fan base.

Age of armor:

So bicker, whine, or complain as much as you like the "clone wars" are never going to end. As for me, I really don't care and am fine with how things are going now.

this is so wrong LaTale isnt a copy of maplestory. theres a huge different LATALE HAS PVP and maplestory is a rip off i hate that game it sucks baby characters so annoying it comes 1000 on my list lol if i rate windslayer it comes聽999 or something cause it has pvp which beats maplestory but windslayer still sucks :/ uber mega slow lvl not even a xp event on CB but windslayer sucks a copy of maple story indeed i played it i became mage and it wasnt great cause pvp lagged alot to :/ i know its a cb but if they dont change the rates in that game i quit it.

Note that latale is better than windslayer and maplestory together i think latale is more pi story related since you can walk up and down on maplestory its right and left latale is up down right left according to videos well in some towns you can go up down and again latale has PVP :D sure it looks like maplestory but come on the graphics and the characters looks cooler :D

And yes, you are right, Ghost online DID some first.

I hope all聽admins paste this聽article @ their forums.聽(with your permission and your name mentioned).

This is a common practice in the MMO game developer industry sadly. I have seen this in Asia a fair bit.
