   Thoughts of V.R. MMO

boomp3.comA weird topic to try to handle, but to be honest it has been on my mind for a while now, and the sad thing is I know this wont happen at least not in my life time. However I would love to actually have a V.R (virtual reality) MMO to come into existence before I leave existence. I guess you could say I watch too much anime because this was not my original idea and I will never take claim to it. (look up dot.hack) Either way the general out look on this would to don' some sort of head gear that brings the player literally into the game making it so that they are actually in the world much like you are in this world. The taste, touch, feel, and all the senses going crazy with this new environment. Though of course you wouldn't be allowed to feel pain the only true pain of death would come from experience loss or however the particular MMO handles death.

Regardless there would be some limitations to it, and some risks as well. If one can go into seizures from playing games (frequently) then they should probably not even invest in something like this. The reason being that not only would there be bright lights but they would seem realistic and up close considering you are your character so everything would be in first person view. Regardless this would also mean that they wouldn't be able to use monsters that would be seen in games like Bloodmare without having a health warning or something like that on the game, and a strict age verification. Believe it or not folks you can die of fright: if you are scared enough you'll have a heart attack.

With that much being said only the true die hard gamers would be able to handle gore incorporated games, and even most of those would probably be banned. Unless they dumbed down the graphics so that when the creature got close enough to you it did not look realistic enough to scare you, but from a distance it could make you want to pee yourself. Though I am sure most players would not like that attribute and would want the monsters graphics to stay constant throughout the game so it can look a great deal more smooth.

This V.R. theory would make playing and choosing classes a whole lot more fun. Though for games where gender is a restriction for classes, it would make those who swap out genders for classes become more of a humorous thing than an annoyance (doesn't annoy me but a lot of people complain about it.) Of course in this sort of situation there would also be a microphone with the head set so I can only assume a strong filter would be placed on the game. Unsure if it would be one that just made your words soundless or placed a funny sound over your words. However this could make partying a lot more stressful when the character who messed up sees a person actually yelling at them and threatening to pvp the person right then and there.

The hardest thing I think to actually pull off with a game such as this would be the freedom of movement throughout the world. After all no one would want to be in a world where they could do insane things, but couldn't do the bare basics of living like a cartwheel or something(even though that's not a basic it illustrates my point very well)

A problem that could come up is if the game crashes what happens to the players mind, and wouldn't that be a health risk? Yes it would be a huge health risk, but I would hope they had something set up like game guard but it would be a mind guard. Much like a circuit breaker: if there is a surge it simply cuts the power so that it wont damage the equipment that is using that outlet. So if there was a mind circuit breaker if the game crashed it would automatically restore normal thought process or at the most leave one a little dizzy (to be realistic) with some sort of head rush while logging them out of the head set.

There are far too many questions about this sort of technology coming into reality. Do I think we can do it? Yep!
But do I think that we will do it?
Not at all</3

Bah, I say forget trying to make a VR game, let's start putting our efforts into turning reality into a game.

We've made enough progress with genetic research now, why can't we start breeding horrible monsters that drop gold when you kill them? Occasionally cough up a health potion if you hit them hard enough? Why?!

Seriously though, I think it's only a matter of time before someone makes a full VR game. We already have the technology to control a computer by thought alone and now we can create artificial eyes to feed sight directly into someone's brain, all it takes is someone to finally connect the friggin' dots.

I've been thinking about this sort of stuff for years, I freakin love it! Me and my mates have thought of a system (purely theory, no idea how it could be done) wich in a very 'Matrix' sort of way would send all your brains electrical impulses to your 'virtual self' instead of you, like re-routing the power. Naturally, the amount of error-trapping and perfect programming required to stop people dying would be stupid...no room for mistakes, but perfect VR.

Of course, all dangerous (awsome) forms of VR are at some point going to require human testing that has the possibility of andangering a human life, meaning it won't get tested for a long time. Maybe in 50 years, when 'glabal warming' has consumed us, or we reach the population cap, then we can start real testing :)

Bottom line (I drifted off again) we could probably have good VR right now, but testing it is a dangerous process, one that we aren't going to be able to try for a long time. (But when we do.....omg.....DBZ VR Online much!??!! :D)

V.R MMO idea is awesome, ive got several thoughts in my mind after reading this
how about chars in V.R game only have one life like we human does on the earth? I mean cutting off the stuff when you die you can get alive again with exp reduced or some side-effect. died is dead, you char is gone, never come back, if you still want to enjoy this game you should make another character, so it's easy to imagine players will take care of themselves while exploring the virtual world, they need to learn more skills like we do in the real world to protect themselves, life is important, and life is only once-time thing.
Anyway, i also think it might be not reasonable to implement in MMO because the cost will be too high as the reason if the character dies, all effort's gone, it's totally a nightmare to those who cannot afford this
Nice article, Paradox!
