Kids who think they're prodigies always say things like that.  Even the most advanced education doesn't eliminate the natural juvenile ignorance of how life works.

What is right for humanity may not always be right for the individual. Growing, expanding, devouring, and surviving is the general goal of all living things; something which "humanity" is not exempt from. "A waste of time" can only be calculated based on the perception of the value we give a certain period of our time. What could be valued as a "waste" could be valued as "well spent" or even "cannot do without" (o.k., that last one is a bit extreme, and if you think that way about games, maybe you have a problem...). I am all for making a lot of money, buying my first exotic car, donating to charities, and funding research grants, but ultimately is it not the "journey" that is much more valuable than the destination? I believe that as long as you truly live your life while you are here, experiencing as much as possible (sure, various "achievements" for humanity can fall into this category), then you have done the job you were put on this planet to do. (By the way, to those that don't know, technically the "destination" is death... not saying that as a bad thing, just pointing out the obvious.)

It is clear what this child sees as valuable to him, but at the same time the child has much to learn in terms of what life is really all about (both for him and for those around him). At the very least he has yet to learn the psychological reasons for why we do anything. He is on the right path (as we all are), but he still has much to learn... just like all of us have. Games have a huge  social efect for humanity,  specialy for peoples with disabilitys who wana comunicate, and most of them use games to lern from images, colours, music. You can use a game to chamge atitudes and discriminations. Peoples play diferent racial characters, they lern how to adapt to new intercultural things, its a simulation of a virtual life that improve social evolution. You can lern there the cause and the efect of a mistake.  There is no political influence there or any other type of bad manipulation that you gona find in capitalism.

 All it says is about his ability to absorb all those stuff like a sponge but nothing about his abiliity to innovate or create. Followers can only go as far as their leaders take them. Thats why I have utmost respect for leaders, and not just ordinary leaders, but pioneers. People like Thomas Edison, Albert Einstien, the Wright Brothers, people who have completely changed the way we live our lives and have the power to uplift the human race to a whole new level.

In the sense that they achive little, of course games are a waste of time - all leisure is a waste of time. But he's forgetting that to BE human you have to balance work and play. In fact, in doing so, humans work more efficiently. If we worked around the clock with no play, our capacity to produce work of a high standard is inhibited.

On a different level, games are a new wave of interaction and communication. Especially in the near future, you are going to see the line between the internet, games and mobile devices reduced. The easier we can interact with people around the world will help us as a race and bring us closer together, perhaps producing even more innovation.

Lots of people would lose their jobs if gaming companies close down because of what this kid says. In worst case scenerio, they would lose their jobs, go homeless, and resort to crime to survive. heck when i was in the first grade i could read books that were at the college level and i understood them easily, also i can guarentee you that most of the U.S. youth are smart but choose not to do the work sence its outrageous sometimes. Especialy when they know you can do it and they just want to give you more work than you have to at an early age. Although I do regret doing the 80% of school work that I should've done but chose not to sence I wanted to hang out with my friends more. Honestly I'd rather take tests instead of doing the daily work / homework.

2.) They're great to pass time.

You can compare Computer gaming to Morphine. Morphine has it benefits but overdosage and frequency of use can have some bad effects. Same goes with computer games. But we all play games because we enjoy it, not because we want to do anything for anybody. We could study and get better marks, of course we'd like to have good marks but that's boring. Seriously dude the fruits of human labor and all that stuff, how is video gaming pointless its simply a means of education, you may have the intelligence to get through college, but seriously America's educational system is mediocre at best and though its an impressive feat nonetheless, video games may be an important utility for higher education and may very well be integrated into our lives in the near future. There is intelligence required to play some video games, dont put off things unless you've tried them, and seriosuly....Liberal Arts...if you went to wrok for Nasa at age 9 like another well-known prodigy i would have really been impressed and mght have even considered your ridiculous claim.

East Los Angeles Community College (ELAC) is hardly something to brag about. Someone with an average 7th grade education in the state of California is able to pass most of the general education classes and someone with a high school education should have already experienced all the classes necessary for a degree at ELAC. For the most part, people who fail from other community colleges end up at ELAC. That gives you a general idea of the difficulty of the classes there. So congratulations to Mr. Cavalin, you are now as smart as a high school graduate.

This kid obviously has no appricciation for 3d interactive art. I'm 33, have degrees in environmental sciences, and enjoy playing mmo's and have for years.  I suppose to this kid, going to a gallery and admiring oil paintings is a waste of time, or bird watching, meditating, disc golfing, swimming, nature hiking etc.  It's called recreation buddy, it alleviates stress and brings enjoyment.  All work and no play is for machines, not humans.  He may be intelligent at elven, but intelligence does not = wisdom, nor understanding.

None of you looks at the bigger picture. Thanks to the games and millions of ppl wasting money and time on them we have such a great progress in computer technology. And while that technology is created for games it goes to different places later - like hospitals for example. Of course there would be progress even without games - most probably military one and we would see todays PC in 50 years. And stuff like Tesla from Nvidia - never. We have computers in everything today - it's all thanks to games. So while I totally agree that games are waste of time - I totally disagree that they're not beneficial. This kid isn't very bright for a genius, it will help humanity in the future. It's helping now with some morales (and hurting too), but besides that, games are pushing the electronic world forward. They're now getting motion capture in video games (wii remote and Project Natal by Microsoft or the Xbox 360) and will help other electronics probably do that too. all i'm saying is the gaming industry is pushing technology forward, so in a way it is helping us.

Personally, I'd disagree. Games DO (indirectly) help the world. The kid shouldn't put educational games (which exist, believe me) and Mortal Kombat in the same group. Add that without games, millions of people would be out of a job now, and an even larger group would suffer death by extreme boredom. They may take up our time, but they don't always waste our time. Fun is necessary for human well-being, yes?

By the way, anyone got the kid's address? I wanna send him a PS3 (or whatever gaming machine) along with a copy of all these wonderful comments just to let him see the world in reality, not the world in his books.

1st POV:

- If in the near future you get really poor and I mean REALLY POOR. Because you decided that you'd rather enjoy things in life (like gaming, etc..) rather than work. There's no one to blame but you and yourself alone.

2nd POV:

-If in the near future you get everything you wanted and everything you needed and STILL not happy. Because you spend almost all your time working and workin and working without noticing all the good things in life. There's no one to blame but you and yourself alone.

Final Words:

-My friends, the thing is, WE must know our priorities in life then balance it out. We should know when to work hard and when to sit back and relax. We should know when to step in and when to step out. Just like what others used to say; “Work, love and play are the great balance wheels of man's being".

Games are a waste of time. Living a life is a waste of time. So in the end we are all wasting our time.

Rather waste my time in a way that I enjoy, and play a game, or go hang with friends. Then thinking that I'm actually wasting my time.

It sounds like this kid doesn't really have a personality, other then the personality of the people that wrote the books that he's been reading.

Anyway although, playing games doesn't benifit others (much), it is a way of spending some of the time that you live. And if everyone would be developing new stuff, and progressing, humanity would come to an end way faster, because then the progress was far enough to destroy all of us at once.

Is easy to say that from someone like him that looks like he got all the luck and gifts he needed (or to much I think...) but he needs first focus in what exactly he is going to do beacuse a book like that wont help anybody especially if its just a book. 11 year old who did all that means he never could enjoy his own childhood but is already too late and if he teen instict start showing well... This kis has not went through the school of life at all. I don't care if he's a genius. Young "geniuses" haven't graduated the school of life. If he truly believes that videos games are a waste of time, then he does not know what people are doing with video games to help the masses. There are people, right now, that are making games for people who have been injured in war, sports, etc. that need rehabilitaion. Before you judge games, this kid needs to learn about them, not just judge from what they post in the media.

An 11 year old gets an AA in liberal arts?  Big deal, I could have gotten one at age 5 but everyone unianimously concluded that watching Ninja Turtles and playing with GIJoes would be much more beneficial in the long run.

It's true though he's only 11 and he hasn't had any experience yet.  Even if he's smart, he's still a child so don't blame him. He was taught a certain way, and believes it's true even thought it's judgeing. I can tell he hasn't really played a game or hasn't found anything that he enjoyed yet. Also if it wasn't for videogames I might have been dead by now from all the stress and abusement I got from my mom. So technically, videogames kinda helped save my life. I'm not the only one who thought this way either.

I have to disagree and agree him for some point. Agree is that it is a fact that games do wasting our time. Disagree is that basically ignoring games are not helpful too, because we all know that games are just for entertainment, and we as human who does not need entertainment?

Basically what we do everyday is not really helpful at all, I believe not more than 3% of our daily doing is really helpful to humanity, it is either only helpful to ourselves, to our family, or to our boss (lol). So everything for what we doing is basically a waste of time too, then tell me what is the difference for us to waste our time on different things and places? For people like him, I think all are the same - gaming are wasting time, clubbing are wasting time, fishing are wasting time, football are wasting time etc etc...

 I'm sorry well calling this kid a true genuis is a little much. he has only had 11 years of life experience and has more to go. he needs to have more life experiences before I will honestly take his advice like puberty for example. don't get me wrong I like putting smart children where they will find the most enrichment, but I think he forgets that games are for enrichment not to save children in africa. Games are mean to provide fun. It is not a tool for change to world or make ppl btter human beings. Games are only for enjoyment, but it can become a seriour issue if it becomes some kind of illness, just like many other things. x)

I would have to disagree withw hat this 11 year old is saying its almost saying somthing like this " video games dont help with anything." Which i disagree with completely think about it like this i believe that people who play video games have more of a fun and sound life rather then a stressful pissed off intense life. The reason for saying this is virtuality is a get away from life and helps people live there lifes at ease. Of course playing games does not help humanity. As well as reading books, taking care of your dog, going to the shop. eating, drinking, sleeping, watching movies, going to the zoo, going out with friends, and living a life altogether.

It is a point of personal gratification to play games not building a clean sufficient energy source or cleaning the world ocean or closing the ozone hole or, and this is my favorite by the way, WORLD PEACE. No matter how smart this kid thinks he is or his teachers think he is or whatever, he is stupid for not being able to see how a video game or a movie or a walk in the park is good for person's own well being.

Who the hell takes advice from Liberal Studies majors anyway? Theyre undecicive and usually have the personality of a mushroom. Coma patients have been known to major in Liberal studies and graduate on time.  Not to mention that its from a community college.
