If anyone's planning to head off to the cinema this weekend and the next, might I suggest these two gems, one current and one upcoming: Cloverfield
What happens when you combine a ton of internet viral marketing, a teaser which leaves a lot to the imagination, the hands of J.J Abrams and a kaiju flick? You get Cloverfield, one of those movies which deserves its hype. It's a monster-movie shown in the perspective of the victims via a camcorder. Cue the comparisons to the 1995 hit Blair Witch Project, only with a bigger budget and a better, well, everything. As much as some people think it's self-important and has something to do with 9/11, just shut the hell up. It's a good monster movie for what it's worth, and most viewers can relate to the protaganists. At the very least, it's as good as the first King Kong movie. Sweeney ToddWhat's this? A Tim Burton movie without Danny Elfman scoring it? Which is also a musical?! Did Hell just froze over or something? Seriously, the wit and macabre that was missing in his previous movies (i.e: Corpse Bride) is all over on this movie like peanut butter fingerprints on a 5-year old's hand. Crafty lyrics and an ample amount of black humor and blood means it's definitely not for the young ones looking for something like The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's a musical that is surprisingly worth watching for everyone, even for those Ah Beng types with their girlfriends who only knew Johnny Depp through the three Disney pirate movies.
