Square Enix has announced its intention to launch a friendly takeover bid for troubled Japanese videogame company Tecmo. The company submitted a proposal for the takeover to the Tecmo board of directors today, seeking their consent for the takeover bid. The conditions of the proposal must be consented to by September 4, and should the Tecmo board fail to respond or not give consent by that date, the planned friendly takeover as outlined in the proposal will not take place. "Videogames have been globally recognized as a major entertainment genre, and have now become an industry receiving considerable attention in terms of market size and growth potential. In the meantime, the game industry in Japan is standing at a critical juncture whether it continues to be a center of the videogame industry in the world, or not," Square Enix said in a statement. But citing the recent, well-cataloged troubles at Tecmo as a major factor in the decision to offer the acquisition, the statement continued, "Tecmo is a group of excellent creators with proven track-record in the global market, which is a precious human resource of Japan. We, however, cannot be optimistic about the future of t

Acclaim boss David Perry has said that Sony will not be able to make a decent profit on sales of the PlayStation 3 due to selling the system at a loss. During his keynote speech at GCDC yesterday, the outspoken games developer claimed that the company has lost more money on the PlayStation 3 than it made during the five year peak sales period of the PlayStation 2. "Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2 - it's not going to happen again for Sony,” stated Perry. "If they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good," he added. Perry suggested that Sony's much talked about ten-year plan for the PlayStation 3 is the company's chance to claw back costs of development in the long-term. "So this is going to force them to make the PS3 last longer and they're kind of positioning to do that," he said. Source: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/perry-sony-has-

A bit of online, in-game sex has resulted in the rapid unemployment of one Funcom employee. An unnamed Game Master for Funcom's Age of Conan has been caught by an in-game passerby having internet nookie with another player. After player who claimed to be a real-life female summoned a male Game Master, they traveled to a remote location in the world and began to describe innuendo-laden sexual acts. The resulting banter may be the most scandalous game-related sex act since San Andreas's "Hot Coffee." An excerpt below shows the conversation started somewhat innocently (The screen name of the androgynous offender has been renamed "Candy"): Candy: ..with dual wield barbarians though, I mean TWO?!?! That's a bit difficult for me to handle. I'd rather stick with one big sword. |GM|: You like it rough I take it :) Candy: Of Course, I'm a ***ing rock sniffer. Candy: With daggers. Candy: And I'm specced for second wind =) I can go all night. |GM|: lol wow, I don't think I would ever be the same :) |GM|: um WOw this is turning me on lol. Candy: Hong Says he wants in on the hot action. But he's a gold farmer/seller. How do you feel about that? He does have a big

The chief judge of the Delaware Court of Chancery has dismissed a request for an injunction against the merger between Vivendi and Activision, clearing the way for the deal to move forward. Judge William B. Chandler denied the request, filed by the Wayne County Employees' Retirement System, which said the merger would put Activision investors in an "unfavorable minority position." When the deal is completed, Vivendi will hold a controlling 52 percent stake in the newly-formed Activision-Blizzard. Chandler, who according to the Wall Street Journal Law Blog has become "an undisputed LB star" for making various pop-culture references in his decisions, displayed an admirable knowledge of World of Warcraft, Blizzard's hit MMOG that is widely viewed as the centerpiece of the merger. Opening with a description of the game, Chandler then wrote, "In some ways, perhaps, the world of Mergers and Acquisitions is a massively multiplayer role playing game as well. Like in World of Warcraft and other games, the participants in the M&A field take on certain roles, interact in their own community, hone specialized skills, and even develop a unique, somewhat curious vern

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Funcom's new massively multiplayer online role-playing game, lets players develop their characters and explore the mythical world of Hyboria. The game offers excellent graphics but also comes with equally breathtaking PC system requirements. Much of the game runs without a hitch, but like many MMORPGs, the true test of the hardware is in the large cities. High population counts, towering spires, long view distances, and tremendous amounts of shadowing all combine to make game frame rates about as viscous as corn syrup. Weaker computers will grind to a stop, while more powerful machines will limp along at less than half or even a third of their usual performance when faced with these large city environments. There isn't much you can do to avoid the frame rate hit, but you can upgrade a few key components to make the game a bit more playable.
Server conditions, population activity, and numerous other conditions make testing MMORPGs difficult. We increased our usual test duration to three minutes and used FRAPs to measure frame rates to compensate for the variability of our test runs. Our test ran through the streets of Old Terantia where we wound
