Why people are so attached to the virtual world?

Couple weeks ago, a 鈥渇riend鈥 of mine met me in a dungeon.And the conversation was went like this:

H聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Hi鈥

L聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Hi, long time no c man鈥

H聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : How r u?

L聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Fine man, how bout u?

H聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : So so鈥 hey btw, do u have a pistol for lv 44?

L聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Yeah, the one I鈥檓 using is lv 44.It鈥檚 unique ^^.

H聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Aah, it鈥檚 shining!Is it +5 or +6?

L聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : It鈥檚 just +5.

H聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Can I borrow it?I just need another pistol to kill that captain more quickly.

L聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 : Oh, sure.

And there goes the transaction with my 鈥渇riend鈥.And 鈥渉e鈥 went to kill the mini boss of that area鈥 if what 鈥榟e鈥 said was true,鈥 which I doubt.Because: half an hour later, the real friend of mine login, and whisp me telling me that his older account has been hacked (or keylogged, whatever the terms is), and warn me about it and also not to trust 鈥榟im鈥.And it was too late.OMG, I鈥檝e been hacked.I repeteadly say to myself that I should have noticed it from the beginning.Because 鈥榟e鈥 spoke in English, while usually, we rather use our mother language.But since we play in International server, we are sometimes using English too.But anyway, the point is, we are being hacked (or scammed in my case to be more precisely)!

Note: I know that the term 鈥榟ack鈥 is not always in a negative way, but from this point on I will use the term 鈥榟ack鈥, as a black hat terms.Please refer to computer literacy or wikipedia for this one.

Now, I was not being hacked directly in this case, but I am still a victim of a hacker.Soon after this, my friend and I was having a 鈥渂lue鈥 moment and loosing all of our spirit to play the game again.I am even nearly loosing my spirit for playing any MMORPG.None of my guildmate know about this, and I don鈥檛 intend to tell them either. My friend decide to quit the game, soon after he try with his new account.I didn鈥檛 touch my PC for an online game for quite some time.But Paradox gave me a comment on my blogsite about Mabinogi and although he never knew my condition, it gave me a little spirit to try a new game, and also remember that I still have friends in MMOSite.

At that time, one of my other friend saying that, 鈥淐鈥檓on man, it鈥檚 just a game, besides you were just loosing something virtual.鈥But I can鈥檛 still let it go!I know that the advice is right.It鈥檚 just something virtual, but something seems to be missing!After I think a little bit of it, I started to realize the reason.And these also might be the reasons of why people getting attached to the virtual world so much, that they unconciously started to loose their real life, marriage, or even die while playing.

Time

I鈥檝e played this game, which adopting F2P subscription model, and although I play it for fun, I pay it with my time!And I really loose my spirit to repeat my grinding just to find a unique items, or to collect money to buy it, because I will have to pay it again with another time!As we might know that people sometimes consider that:

Time is Money

Time = Money

And considering that hacking my items mean hacking my time, I will have to say that:

Hacking = Stealing other鈥檚 time

Stealing other鈥檚 time = Stealing other鈥檚 money

People can have an argument that we are using our leisure time, which is not productive (not productive means not producing any money rite?), to play game.But please consider the other way side.Does any of you guys remember what wulligame describe about a guy who has to woke up early just to mine in the morning?There are LOTs of people has that condition.And I am one of them.So, yes, for us time is money or for at least, it is precious!

If you guys loosing something precious, is it easy for you to let it go?Sometimes, it is so hard to let your boyfriend or girlfriend go, because you have spent SO MUCH TIME together!It is not easy to let something that you鈥檝e spent time with.You鈥檒l need a lot of effort to do that, unless you are a really really easy going with anything that has happened in this world.So yes, for me, game hackers and game scammers are criminals.Because they took advantages by stealing other鈥檚 precious thing.

The more definite virtual life vs uncertainty in real life

In the world of MMORPG, the outcome is more definite compare to the real life.Working so hard grinding and hunting WILL eventually lead you to a higher level, more money, and a greater chance of having a good items.Now in the real life, you are sometimes working your ass up just to end up being nobody or even gain nothing.I have seen in my life, how people working so hard but not getting richer or attain new level of life.That鈥檚 why there are so many books out there, trying to give a clue about how to get rich or 鈥済ain level鈥 in your life.

So yeah, I choose to spent my 鈥榣eisure鈥 time in the virtual world of MMORPG because I know the definite result that I can get.And after so much uncertainty in the real world, it is very refreshing to found something certain in my life.Also the feeling of gain a new level gave me a certain satisfaction that I have achieved something.More over, if I can get some items, it gave me another level of satisfaction too.Some people are so getting into this 鈥渘ew鈥 feeling that they decide to gave up their real life, which I thought is stupid, and we see the headline of how people getting divorced because of online game, people die because of online game, and etc.

However, when I got hacked, my alternative definite result has fly away with my definite hope.That鈥檚 why it is very hard to let go something virtual!

This is mmoRPG, it鈥檚 a ROLE dude!

When you get into a role, at certain point, there will be attachment to your character.Some people can choose their opposite sex for many reasons, but some part of them is also created in that character.When people say noob to your character, we can鈥檛 just ignore it as an insult to our role, but it is directly insulting you!Because the character is being controlled by you, expressing emoticon by you, saying your word, and dressing the way you like!It representing you in the virtual world.It is virtual but it鈥檚 you in there.

While you don鈥檛 want to get scammed in the real life, obviously you don鈥檛 want your character get scammed.When you loose something precious in your real life you will need time to heal, that is also going to happened in the virtual world.

That鈥檚 my reasons on having a strong attachment to the virtual world of MMORPG.I still consider my life as normal, because I still has healthy social life, I can still maintain my job, I spent some time with friends, family, and colleagues.But hey, being hacked is sucks, even if it鈥檚 virtual!

Sometimes it's hard to trust even your real life friends when it comes to online games. Believe it or not, there are many situations where the friend ends up stealing your items or changing your password/PIN code to enter the game. I don't think it's poor not to trust your real friends with something like that, most companies do say that you're meant to be the only one with your account details.

DexCross: I know, but it's still the whole idea of being cautious with your own username and password. I'll agree with CesarSuki in saying that there should always be some type of 'code' or 'catch phrase' that would be the identifier - only said in PM. Routine and rules make things a bit easier to catch onto, and minimalize the amount of damage done to the person who was hacked (because sometimes if he ever starts to play again, those who got scammed would think that the victim was the scammer).

Hmmmm a game is a game to me, even if I lose something. But UNLESS I actualy payed for the items in the game, then I get pissed off. As for me, I don't think this has ever happened to be, but I did get hacked once, and it was probably because a of a keylogger. I was playing Mu Online, like 5 years ago, when I once tried to log in, but couldn't, when I finally got in, all my items where gone. But w/e, its not like I had anything really valuable :P

@cesarsuki:
Yeah I should have, and I will.

@splices:
That's true. In this case, it is not a brute force hacking, but a keylogging. Yeah it's just a wish if we want a nowadays game without hackers. This article is not made to have a "war" with hackers, but I'm showing a case where virtual world is an attachment to someone.

@lekaku:
Viewing that way, I can still say that I am lucky.

@Nator316:
I dun think it's the game security flaw in this case. As I have say, it was a case of keylogger. The game IS A GOOD ONE. Even I have lost some spirit, but I still play it. I will recommend people to play it. It's not the game fault, but rather my friend's own fault by playing in any place that he didn't know or trust. However, I will recommend people NOT to play at unknown internet cafe to avoid such case.

To me, this seems a bit too tied into the virtual world. I'm not trying to condem, considering I love my characters (normally) as much as I love myself [as you've said, they're a virtual representation of myself]. At the same time, I take the time to make varied passwords that I know that no brute-force dictionary is going to crack in a day or two [so people give up trying after it takes that long]. I don't draw any attention to myself, except for on forums/blogs/etc (like these - but not normally in-game).

Hard to say how I feel about this without giving the impression that I don't care; but I do care (that's the problem here). I understand how you and your friend might feel, but considering I'm a computer geek (as well as a gamer) - I don't really see any reason someone should be able to hack anyone's account unless the game calls for a null-password exploit (meaning you don't need to authenticate to actually get into someone's account as long as you know the right data the server wants). Other than that, I normally size it up to the person being slightly careless with their username and password (not difficult enough, normally). Always remember: alphanumeric [a-z, 1-0] and at least two capital letters and one symbol [! to @]. That's my rule of thumb when using passwords... @.@;

These people who scam one another or even decide to brute force someone's password are the types that are ultimately ruining MMORPGs altogether. There isn't too much that we can do about them, it just means that companies should be more responsible with ensuring that someone's password is 'secure' (requiring them to have a stronger password) and at the same time keeping server-side logs of trades and drops (so that they can match up IP addresses in order to be capable of restoring those who were scammed/hacked). These types of enquires take time and money for companies to sort out, if ever. So it's basically hopeful wishing...

ow, man I'm sorry to hear that, I think we all should have some secret code between buddies to know that it is really him or her before lending some item >_<
