Holy Quest of MMORPG Industry: Killing WoW

Category: Game Industry Game: World of Warcraft Posted on Dec 02, 2008 1:26 am

If gamers are transformed to NPC, and game publisher are transformed to Game Player, I think gamers are currently giving the holy quest to game publisher:  Kill WoW!  Kill the ruler of current MMORPG market world, and you will be well rewarded with… gold.

Well some people getting disturbed by this terms: WoW killer.  And they getting sick of how people always comparing new game with the king of its genre.  I have a bad news for them: people will continue using it until a real challenger of WoW is coming!

The terms WoW killer, doesn’t mean that a game will come and make WoW loose all their players and die!  Please don’t get it wrong.  But yes this term can be used as a reference that a game should succeed WoW’s throne!  So I am not really agree with any opinions saying that  we should stop using this term “WoW killer”!  When you said to your friend something like, “Come on let me know, you’re killing me here.”  Does this mean that your friend is actually killing you???  No, he / she’s not.  So, it’s just a term.  What do you expect us to use?  WoW challenger?  WoW contender?  No, let’s just use the term: WoW killer.  It’s a perfect term.

In marketing world, a category killer always become the holy quest of the industry players.  And almost in every industry, there is one ‘king’ of category that needed to be ‘killed’ as they are reign as the category killer.  So WoW killer term is not the first term used in ‘category killer quest’.  It’s common, although in this case, WoW still can not be considered as category killer cuz there are still many games can achieve significant profit in MMOG industry.  Anyway, once there is a good product, people will expect you to overcome that product on your new one, so that they have reason to buy yours.  The king will always be the new standard.  So face it, WoW killer will always be the holy quest that given by gamers to all game publishers.

If you want an example, try to make a new cola taste softdrink, and I believe that people will start to compare your product with Coca Cola.  Or try to make a portable music machine, and people will start to compare your product with IPod.  Yes, people always comparing.  So don’t complain anymore about why people always looking for WoW killer.

Is it good for the market?  As long as I know, competition always give benefits to end users.  That’s why our governor always trying their best to prevent monopoly.  So it is good that new game always being compared to the market leader.  They will try their best (yeah well, it’s not always, … sometimes) to coup de tat the king.  Although they’re not always succeed.  In this case, lately people always shout AoC.  Basically, competition is not only the basis of protection to the consumer, but is the incentive to progress.  So, yes I have to say it is good.

The main question is not about the effect of WoW killer terms.   It’s about how and what kind of game that can overthrown the giant?  Everybody can have their own theory.  And in my next article, I will explained my own theory.  I encourage everybody to express their opinion.

Well some people already predict that Aion has the best chance so far.  Other has their own fave.  But the outcome of number of players and also the money involved will be the judge.   I will always be one of many gamers who will be waiting for the WoW killer!

 @naridas

For your info, expansions are not meant to make huge changes to a game. You expect, what, a 100+% addition of new content with each expansion? The original WoW was a major success and Blizzard has no reason to change the game's concept. Sure thing Korea gives out more games, concepts and better graphics, but surely 10 million players makes a statement doesnt it? Blizzard was able to achieve with one mmo, what hundreds of Korean mmos were unable to achieve. Even if you pick a few Korean games and combine their all their players, it would still lose out to 10 million.

like nailzzz said in another blog, he says wow is holding back the mmo advancement the most now since they dont really change much in expansion it still holds the same concept of the orginal wow and the reason people get annoyed at wow (i think mostly because of wow clone comments) is the people in it since they say its the best but it really matters on ur taste and these days people believe ur a hikkimori (NEET) if u play wow but i think thats ridiculous.  i dont believe people are being totally biased when they say korean company is better perhaps they believe they give out more different concepts, games and better graphics and since blizzard only has wow it its like 1 vs 300 and i dont think just  one can beat the different combos of korean companys (also ur being biased invasion and its impossible to be biased so that includes me)

Well, even if you being objective in most cases, it won't satisfy everybody right? ^^

I just dont get it. Blizzard brought us one hell of an online game and instead of being happy about it we have like so many people who are against it and wanting it to get 'killed'. Does it mean that the better a game is, the more it is hated? People should be happy playing what they want to play and not complain about what they dont want to play. Or are they  just biased people who think that it is a Korean company and not the American Blizzard who deserves to hold the mmo throne, because Korea produces so many (more) games? because these people are racist Asians? (No offense here, but just what is it that you people want? What does it take to make everyone stop posting unpleasant comments?)

No, we don't want it to be killed. I just said, it is very normal for the industry, to receive an expectation that they make a better products than WoW, and at this point they give a term WoW killer.

I feel the main reason wow is so big is because of its difficulty level. Its very easy to understand and its VERY easy to max out your character. I for one don't like wow to much because of the way the characters look and the choice or armor sux but that's just me. I think wow would be pretty easy to beat if game companies didn't try so damn hard to beat it all you need is a game that's easy to learn with a lot of content that's basically all that wow is. Its not some all mighty god. But the longer other mmorpgs take to come out the harder it will be for them to beat wow because every time wow has a new expansion its soooo "epic" and it keeps there players interested longer but really its just the same shit in another color.

I agree with many of y our points.

there are tons of game out there that can beat wow..too bad they mess up and lost the chance!!

Game like Conquer is so freaking old and yet it still have a strong players base..but other that is new and has 3d but they lost tons of players cuz they made the game insane grinds..wiping out their player base!!

All they think about is graphic. After that they didn't put enough into gameplay, gears, upgrade of gears and materials to improve gears...What ppl want is to have a game that is fun to play but at the same time you can Make Uber char with godly gears.  Instead they try to make money by putting too much in cash-shop.  Destorying the game itself for money! all that is left are those that paypal all the way!

Yeah, many things contribute to the success of a game. And true, you can't just rely on one element, like graphic for ex. It's a unity of harmony from many elements of games.

Wow there are so many WoW haters some of this guys hate WoW so much that they dont see the point. The point is that WoW is the King of MMO hands down but other mmos are being up down due the brute force of WoW. So, instead of trying to climb over come the giant to get to the top it will be easier to kill the giant and climb over his dead body. See its not expanding the market.... in mmos thats a load of bull (unless its causual games the ya) but if its targeted for hardcore gamers then companies have to kill the king

Dexcross replied at 2:39 pm Apr 25,2009
We don't hate WoW. I just said that if this quest become the industry's current target, it is very normal.

i think blade&soul, C9 and dragon nest have pretty interesting game concept yet not too complicated, i think the game concept can beat wow but i dont about other things.  i think jumpgate evo have the best graphics idea because it doesnt require high graphics but the graphics look smooth and it also supports most laptops which is always the problem for me when im playing games because they dont support my laptop graphics card lol.

Dexcross replied at 2:37 pm Apr 25,2009
I have hope about blade&soul too, but we have to wait for the result. Graphic is one of the most important elements, but gameplay will play a major role too. But I agree with you, some concept seems promising.

Now, waiting for the wow-killer means you don't like wow ?

It's even possible that sooner or later wow will have a huge rock solid fan base and when you think of numbers, that number will be hard to beat.
VERY hard.

Dexcross replied at 9:39 pm Dec 02,2008
It doesn't mean that I don't like WoW. I just want to express my feeling that I am waiting for the next generation MMORPG.

Yes, it's gonna be hard to beat, but it's still possible. Especially in the world of technology driven market.
