Embryo Of Great Game Called Clone

Category: MMOSite Writers Club Topic Game: Default Posted on May 13, 2008 4:16 am

First of all, I will say this:

“LET THERE BE CLONE!”

Why?

Because I have seen too much in my life that the act of copying (or borrowing the idea) lead to many great products in their future.  I’ll give an example later.

Another reason is, it will promote the genre heavily.

Some will say: “BUT CLONING IS NOT THE SAME AS COPYING”

Exactly!  Clone in terms of genetic biology science refers to a word of identical EXACT replica.  So if you really never find a game that EXACTLY the same, why do all people keep using this term as a word to represent someone who copy some aspect of game to develop a new one?  They are not doing the real cloning in this term.  Splices point of view explain it, so I won’t cover it anymore in here.  Go read it here.

Yes, I understand there are so many terms out there for clone’s meanings.  In this case, from this point onward, I will use this terms as the ‘usual’ meaning tendency, that a game is similar to other in many many ways.

Genre Promotion

Before I explain my first reason to support the clone, I will go to the second: clone war will promote the genre heavily.  If the genre become alive, it will attract many people or companies to consider penetrating the genre’s market.  And it will force them to be more creative if they don’t want to die.  So it is good.

 VS

Most people in the world, know these 2 brands: Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola.  And cola genre is really getting promoted heavily during cola war.  Now if we refer to Maple Story vs Wind Slayer, I don’t even consider to try Wind Slayer, but because of this clone war, I am ‘forced’ to download it.

 VS

Some people complaining about why we are comparing titles in the same genre.  I have to say IT IS NORMAL to compare.  Maybe it will be a neverending clone war.  But it’s completely OK and healthy!  It promote the genre.

Face it: people compare many thing!  I found a debate about who’s the greatest in soccer, Pele vs Maradona.  I found a war about operating system in a seminar, Windows vs Linux.  I found a site that has a neverending topic about who’s the best in console, PS3 vs XBOX360 vs WII.  And they are all have their own valid argument.  So it’s basically a neverending war.  But once again, it is normal.  In the end, the market will decide the product’s life.

As for the MMOGs clone war, it will force developer to think creatively about how to differentiate their product.  When I review and compare Ghost with Maple, people start complaining about why do I have to compare.  I have to say, I have to!  Besides, it is an input for developers too.  If there’s clone war, let it be folks.  People has right to say about their opinion.

Embryo

Post World War II, Japanese, the defeated party, suffered a devastating result.  Their industries ruined.  They barely can develop anything.  But they eventually started it … by copying technology from the more advanced country.  They earned the title as copycat nation.  BUT, 50 years later, they are no longer held the title.  Maybe China does now.  Japanese companies become international companies, as we know many of them, even in the world of game: Sony, Nintendo, SEGA, Square Enix.  They taught us one thing, it is OK to START WITH copying or cloning, BUT proceed them by adding CREATIVITY and NEW features.

In the world of game, do you find similarities between Disciple and Heroes of Might and Magic?  But they both earn popularity and produce sequels that worth to play.  Dune II with Command and Conquer?  I believe the world well known title of RTS also copied some features from them, including Warcraft series.  And Warcraft is one hell of the great game series I’ve ever played.  They start with copy and similarities.  But that act is an embryo of many great games!

I believe the world of MMOGs will apply the same rule.  Clone it in some ways, add new features, and someday, there will be great games.  Do you think that World of Warcraft is an all fully NEW features game?  Yes they are great at some aspect but that doesn’t mean they didn’t copy some features from other game.  Have you read Paradox article explaining that Ghost Online was come first but nobody called Maple as clone of Ghost?   So even if they did clone Ghost, you’ve seen a prove that clone can be a popular (or for some people, great) game.

Well, the MMOGs industries will full by “Attack of The Clones”.  But this may rise a “New Hope”.  Because it will force the “Old Title or Company Strikes Back” or  we will see the “Return of A More Creative Clone Game”.  Do not underestimate the power of the clone.

Theres an extreme view which says only the first game is original, so I agree with you in this article. Copy is not the end or death of game. With new features in it I believe it can win players' positive jugement.

This is true. THaats a different look on it. But I dont belive that games slowly create new features though, Atleast, not in the way that you said. I believe that the companies see the future, they know what theyre striving for. THe can see that 12 months from now they can release something completely different. But they cant just throw a game out into the crowd that comepletely new and odd and hope they like it. Theyve got to ease thier way in. Sloooowly. YOu cant give a rat water for 1 year then switch it out with coke and say, here, enjoy. It wil taste odd and un natural. Slightly tweak it, let the community ease in to the idea of a side scrolling, or space shooting, or quest grinding mmo. And even after finally inching youre way toward youre goal, give a big tutorial for people who are fresh to the idea and not used to the controls or gameplay or sights.  BUt then, I dont know much about game development. Just throwing that in.
