War of the Immortals CBT Kicks off and my first day playing

So the beta is finally here, and I jumped in it as it started with one of my friends, this time not Irving, but Adam. So starting off we picked our classes, he went with the close range Duelist, and I with the long ranged mage. In total there is eight classes you can choose from, all but one is non-gender locked. The only one that is gender locked is the Enchanter aka Enchantress.

Starting off the game went in the horrible 4:3 resolution and I was quickly able to change it. There isn’t a lot of depth to the graphic editor, but there is one feature that bothered me to turn on. The ‘Glow’ feature which does tend to make things look a bit more, bright, but it also seems to blur it as well, which is a bit of a downer for me. It actually hurt my eyes to stare at the glow effect, so I turned it off for when I play.
So going through, we only played for a few hours today. To be perfectly blunt, my experience with the game and my thoughts so far on it aren’t that great. Like I said, we played for a few hours, but in that time, we got to level 35 with almost no effort at all. Now, Adam speculates that this is because it is closed beta, so they have to have bumped up the xp rates for it to be this fast. I don’t know, based off the level requirements for each quest we go to.

The tutorial section was pretty much talking to different npcs, then fighting a like two different types of monsters. From that we got past level 10 in a breeze and got some equipment that quickly became outdated as we pressed on. The one amusing bit for the tutorial is that my starting armor set had me looking like Aladin in a way. As soon as we got to the town, we did do a bit more fighting, actually got our first pet and told how to capture pets, which is a bit handy. The pets in the game do level up with their own xp and you can stat them however you want, they get stats per level and there is an explanation of what each stat will do.
The actual character development so far seems bland as I couldn’t start statting my character after I already leveled awhile, which I think was either around level 25-30. Then for skills you have no choice in the matter. You get skills at certain levels, and that is that. Mages don’t seem to have branching spell trees and follow a routine level path, which to me feels really dull for character development. Not to mention you only get a few skills starting out, so while you fight, you will be spamming the same skills over and over.

Another odd thing to note, there is an instance dungeon early on which is some sort of graveyard/sewer place. Could not join it with my friend even though we were in the same party, so I ended up having to fight solo/tank as a mage, which I can tell you it isn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Not that I had to pot a lot, but the whole reason I picked a mage was to fight with my friend, and so far it really hasn’t felt like we had to, or could when we wanted. Now, I am not sure yet if there are ones we can do together later, I still have to find out.
I know this was kind of short, but being my first day, this is my impressions thus far from the limited things we have seen. So far the game hasn’t been the more pleasant, and actually bored my friend since we didn’t seem to do anything or any real exploring yet, other than chatting with npcs, leveling, and mixed with the occasional battle.
For those of you playing so far, what do you think?
