   Defending Free To Play
 Category : General mmorpg's   |  Game : Default

Lately I've been reading more and more complaints about players that just seem to hate the Free to Play model. I see it everywhere, in the forums, in the blog, in my cereal. And I'm sick tired of it. I keep reading and I never get to the part of someone replying "Oh no man Free to Play is really cool I like it .." No, the rest is just people nodding and as usual throwing in additional complaints of their own.

Well I think Free To Play needs a lawyer, and since I would go down defending it, here is my effort on paying Free To Play back for all the fun that I've had.

Suki Law Firm

Start

Curiosity was what brought me to online games, I had heard about World of Warcraft, but since I couldn't afford it, I didn't even google it. Later, I saw more and more references to online games from the TV series I watched and gaming websites, and I became inevitably more curious by the hour. One day when I finally embarked on the quest to play online I saw "Free to Play!" on a web banner and I thought to myself "There is hope!!". I kept browsing and I found Rose Online, I downloaded and played for a while, but later I read the website more carefully and realized it was just a trial. Bummer, I was just getting excited, what point was there to play then for a week if I just would be able to keep exploring after a week?  So I kept going and bumped into 2D online games, I found some nice people and some hostile encounters.

Later I got hooked on Fly For Fun, F.E.A.R. Combat and other free games. In my situation I have so many things that I have to pay that I just can't afford to pay a monthly subscription. Maybe I could pay a subscription one or two months, then I might buy a book that I need and voila! I don't have a penny.

"Seize the moment of excited curiosity on any subject to solve your doubts; for if you let it pass, the desire may never return, and you may remain in ignorance."
-William Wirt

Plus, paying for a game would make me feel somehow that I am wasting my money if I don't play for a certain amount of time on the week.

That would certainly trigger my mom's voice in the back of my head saying "You shouldn’t be paying for games you don't have time to play!!!"

This is where Free To Play suits me like a made-to-order tuxedo, I can spare some money every now and then to buy some luxury item on the mall; and I could just login and say "Hey guys I have final exams the next two weeks, I'll be offline for a while". Maybe I will be guildless when I log back in, but I don't have to worry about money spent for nothing.

Someone to talk to

Welcome to the future, this not the 90's anymore, more and more people can afford to buy powerful computers. Hence more people have the chance to play great games with their budget computer.

It is a proven scientific fact that interaction of one being with others is an essential part of its early development. The more  a person is exposed to different and new information, the more agile his/her brain becomes. I think that free online games provide a significant opportunity of kids and teenagers. For example in global games they have the opportunity to interact with players from all ages and all over the world. They will learn about other cultures, religions, languages, etc. Hopefully they will develop tolerance towards people who think different and hear different points of view about some topics.

Wither they like it or not players will become more proficient at extracting information from the web. They will become resourceful and computer savvy. It is specially important for people who live far from populated areas, because they can be socially active and become motivated. For students it is a great way not just to have fun, but to start practicing their networking skills. Instead of just leaving their buddies idiotic comments on MySpace, they will rehearse their public speaking skills, and their ability to handle a large amount of acquaintances. From  a college point of view, networking is the most effective way to get a job, and meeting people and learning how to be respectful towards other is a concept that can be learned in MMOs.

The Free To Play model offers this for free, if you never buy from the item mall it's ok, no one will track you down and sue you for it.

Sampling

Another thing the F2P haters don't realize is that many players that begin in the MMO world are making the transition between F2P to P2P. I might include myself in this category because I am head over heels for Aion.

Some P2P games have trials but let's be plain honest here, how much of the taste of online gaming can you get in 5 days or 15 days?....Not much..  This is where F2P come in, when playing you can get a taste of:

  1. What theme suits you better
  2. What you find fun in online gaming
  3. Experience on Guild Management
  4. Good Merchant Practices

and more..

Later, Free To Play can make a more informed decision when buying a game and sticking with it. The best consumer that companies can have is one that just gets into the store, knows what he wants and will be faithful to the brand.

The Duel

Before all of you hardcore P2P people get annoyed and cranky over reading this, I want to state that I am not against P2P.  I think there shouldn't be a supremacy of any model in particular. Variety is good, but variety of free games, that is a luxury.

MMO players are becoming younger and younger, because they learn how to use computers at a younger age. P2P is not an option for them, B2P maybe, but, this are kids we are talking about they don't make long term commitments of any kind.

It doesn't matter how much you rant and blurt out about how heavenly and sacred P2P games are, if I wrote you 40 pages telling you why you should buy a Lamborghini Reventon, you would be marveled at the features; but still won't be able to afford it.

Closing Argument

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I want to appeal to your common sense about the market. The more competition we have among companies the more they will try to improve their services. The F2P market shouldn’t be discarded for a few bad apples. Bad elements happen everywhere, even inside your own family you might have a "black sheep".  My client has been bashed and flamed and even looked down by the plaintiff Mr. I-Got-Money-P2P-Is-better numerous times.

I want you to remember how many times my client has provided a fun experience for broke college students that can barely afford their books. How many times, thanks to my client's services players with depression or a broken heart have found someone to talk to, to confide in at times they were troubled the most. How my client has saved entire guilds money when they transferred to another game because they got bored of it.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, my client has problems. But can we blame the car for drunk driving? Of course not, it would be ridiculous! Should my client just apologize and withdraw from the market completely?  Imagine the impact that would have on the MMO world, no more Free To Play.

Now it's up to you honorable jury to decide over my client's faith. Before you vote "guilty" I want you to remember about all the options that will be taken away from the millions of players around the world, think about so many of them will be deprived from their escape of the hardships of life.  You have the power to help us make this better or put and end to it, remember that change is what has lead game companies to find undiscovered territory where no one had dare land a foot.

Zalcryz I agree with most of what you said. Their are many games out there that don't sell the better armor in their cash shop, they sell things that make your character look uber, but not better. Most games do have the double xp, but I don't usually buy those. I agree that if people used restraint they could spend less in a F2P, I only spend like $5-7 a month and sometimes less if I only play a short time that month. Thats another good thing about F2P, you can play a short time and not have to think "I paid $15, I want to get my moneys worth." I know a couple of you are thinking "but $15 isn't much compared to movies and dinner and such" which is true but its the principal of it. If I'm going to spend $15 a month on a game and only play 3 hours a month, in my mind its not worth it. Now if they had rollover time like AT&T has for their cell phones, then maybe. They could say the average person plays say 20 hours a month and if you play only 3 hours you still have 17 hours the next month, and so on. I don't see game distributors doing this because they're not thinking "more people will sign up and play, hence we'll make more money". They're still going to have the people who play 20+ hours a month, but they'll also get the people who will pay $15 and that'll last 2-6 months, I don't see anything wrong with that, their still making money, from the monthly, the rest is gravy. Plus sometimes I will play 20 hours a month, but usually less.

mhm i totaly agree with this and the fact that everyone uses the fact of grind against F2p lets see if and i mean "if" WoW where to say go F2p they would open a cash shop and increase the grind why cause they want you to buy the exp increase items or stronger weapons so you will grind faster you see
1) i cant take the grind as a factor in this fight
2) how does lack in F2p games ive played plenty with story its jsut most people wont sit through it because they are in a hurry to lvl
3)I agree there are more botters in P2p games i used to play P2P games and such if you thinka bout it they dont care gold farming isnt a hack or bug and as long as the farmer is paying the monthly bill they probably would care less untill they get alot of complaints
4)Of course this is a must not every1 has no life to pay monthly and i dont mean it badly but if you have the money to pay a game monthly dont you think it could be used more responsible i mean there are far more important things then the game
5) Yes i actually enjoy F2p more only P2p game i play now is Phantasy star universe but i stopped a couiple months back, but back on topic i enjoy them more because you meet alot of people though nowadays i see less people willing to talk other then grind v.v; or its just me
6) And maybe you would spend more on a cash shop but that is your choice basicly if you have no self control then its your loss but think of it...your working paying the game monthly then you get fired and you cant pay the bill after your rent and cablke and such are payed you cant log onto Wow till you pay it which wont happen till u get another job but...same situation but F2p so wat you wont have cool clothes or that awsome weopn because the time ran out but think you can still play the game even though you are broke
7) im not going against P2P but this is so trivial no matter how much you defend one it wont change the mind of anyone but its nice to see someon standing up for F2p im not much of a poster but if its caught my eye you might see my post keep up the good work suki...ill be watching these blogs for more interesting how would you call it...Debates,but whatever you want to call it...well back to the usual..till next time xP

You know, even though I explained why P2P has botters, hackers and gold farmers eithe people didn't read my comments or they deny them. P2P games will have more botters for the reasons I listed. Deny it all you want, but you can play any MMO and you'll see botters, and gold farmers. F2P games have the most to loose from botters and farmers, and P2P games have most to gain. Gold farming is a big business, some people make a living doing it. They farm their gold and gather loot then sell it for gold as well (more rare items they sell on ebay), and then they sell their gold to sites that buy the gold and then sell it again at a higher price. This mostly happens in other countreis, but you'll find gold farmers in the USA too. These sites that sell gold, its a million dollar business, but the thing is, the bots in the game are all pay accounts so most games don't care. If you have a P2P game that has 100,000 players and 40,000 are bots, you're not going to care about the bots. And all the 40,000 players are making more than $15 a month farming gold with their bots so theirs your reason. P2P games you get more money for farming than F2P so thats why they do it.

nah!!!! i reject ur opinion why u defend it!
yeh u might not have money to pay for a game..but i can say that most of the F2P game are corrupted !!!
why i say corrupted is!!!!
1)Lack Of Customer service> example SRO...........u post up ur problem they dont even bother to help u.
2)Community> its hard to find there is a real player or botter to hang with> Sro, Cabal online, Knight Online and more.
3)Botters> u cant aggue with this fact cost most of the botters are from asia. and if u play MMO that made
by an asian company. U see most of them act nothing to handle the problem.
4)Gold Farmers> Not real life players but its been program to collect gold.u see most of them in those Asian MMO.
5)NOT every F2P mmo are saving money. if you get addicted u will wanna buy more items to powered up your characters and its not worth it. Get addicted and you end up paying hundreds of dolars just because 1 game.
6)F2P may win P2P BUT lose in community, storyline, quest, and hard grindfest+botters and farmers.
the most saving money p2p games are WOW and its community friendly+ i like the storyline and the customer service they really listen to your opinion not like F2P games even u spam they dont bother.

Very Nice Topic. This has been on my mind ever since CABAL came out for NA. A lot of people posting here thinks it's the quality of the game to base their thoughts on. Personally, I don't think it's the quality; I'm gonna have to go with community.
Before dishing out the big gun I'd like to point out a couple things that should be irrelevant to this topic that some of us can't quite see.
-Botters/macroers are inevitable; P2P or not. Here's why. Why would botters pay to play a game to farm ingame for actual money? Think of the payment methods involved and think of the word, 'fraud'. So, I'll put it this way; Paying for top-notch antivirus doesn't mean you won't get infected.
-The difference in quality. If you're talking about flaws in gameplay mechanics/programming, P2P MMO's almost always have a slight advantage. But, I'm saying that from unbiased perspective. P2P MMO's have the potential to do A LOT of stuff as well as changes with their games because of their budget.
Speaking of quality, that brings me to my main argument...

Keep in mind that when you purchase a P2P membership; you are also purchasing the community (in a sense) and better customer/member support.
This definitely does not mean that F2P has a bad community. I apologize beforehand for using Jagex' RuneScape as the most PERFECT example of this.

The updates are posted right in your face before entering the server select menu. 95% of the time updates were always maintenance updates and patches all for P2P members with 5% being holiday events and stuff in the F2P that had the potential to ruin a P2P member's gaming experience. And that about sums it up for all I can remember...That concludes my reason for the better customer/member support half of the argument.

Sorry for spamming your blog, Suki. But I promise this is the very last section and most juicy part of my whole comment....So here it is... When you purchase P2P membership, are you buying a 'better' community?
So, for me, QingNi, being on both sides of the feud (now neutral) of F2P and P2P - I can proudly say that the answer is yes. And the rest of my story will explain =) . The biggest thing that hit me hard was grammar change from a RuneScape F2P to a P2P. There was so much more people using correct grammar and punctuation (rather than your usual three/four letter words and abbreviations) AND players willing to help you without obligation or incentive and sometimes led to free items and new friends.
But, RuneScape, being my first MMO. It really didn't change the gamer I was...
Then FFXI caught me.
There's a lot of things I don't know about FFXI, and few that I do. But, ANYONE could tell the difference. It was the community. People were willing to go out of their way to do stuff for you. If your character died in the middle of a dark jungle surrounded by giant possessed trees and demon tigers you can bet someone WILL DEFINITELY come out there and ressurrect you and get you to safety as long as you get their attention.
And my F2P vs P2P adventure (and reason for being neutral) continues to unfold through other MMO's but I've done enough damage to your blog page.

Cheers and kudos to CesarSuki for the epic blog.
Regards,
- QingNi

You are wrong my friend, there are f2p games with 0 hackers like Sword of the new world (USA version), and why? you should ask?, answer is easy, it's all because of the community, the mature community of this game make it very safe from hackers and child people that well you know.....Well and pls come on, you will notice in the future that all the game real cash that you spent in all your live will have no sense, like any other normal addiction that ppl have so in my opinion games are the same, f2p,p2, all depends on community and if they want to pay to play it's their desicion so you shouldn't care about that :P.

thnx the people who say that they cost to much are the ones that either play the wrong F2P games (the ones where you have to buy stuff to gain in the game) or the ones that want the extra XP or the nicer looking armor. I play the ones where you don't need to buy stuff to go ahead in the game, and I just buy things to because I think their kind of cool and to give some money to the devs.

The people who say they have to many botters or hackers are in denial when they play their P2P games. Lineage 2 for one I hear 3/4ths of the players are bots and that they tolorate a certain percentage of them because each bot is a paid account. F2P games have much more to loose with bots so I think they would want to get rid of them because bot players usually don't pay.

Like I said I'm not against P2P, but I don't understand why people are against them. I see a few P2P and F2P games that are coming out that look amazing. Bring em' on!

Ppl doesnt like beacuse they say ppl waste to much money on the mall or they have to much hackers and botters. I dont have that kind of problem when I play them so "what`s the big deal?" f2p are fun sometimes they are better them p2p so is better to leave them alone.

Nice artlicle!

I've defended F2P games for a long time. I wouldn't have gone as far as you, I don't think F2P games help people become more socially motivated and help with communicate with a large ammoung of people. If a person is shy he/she can be more open online because they don't have to physically see the other people.

F2P games aren't bad, I've had lots of fun with them. I hear people saying P2P is better because they don't have hackers or botters. Those people haven't played MMO's before or they don't know how to look for a botter. All MMO's that have been around for a while have bots... Lineage 2, WoW, EVE...etc they all have them. Most MMO's are either like WoW or Lineage, so you can't say that F2P are clones because most MMO's are clones of something (EVE is different but an aquired taste). Their are quite a few good F2P games out there, and more that are going to be coming out. Sure their are going to be good P2P games as well. I don't see why F2P and P2P can't be around together, and why people have to complain about them. Leave them alone, their not harming anyone. If you don't like a game, don't play it.
