The Importance of Looking Good

Category: Default Game: Default Posted on Nov 21, 2008 9:23 am

So it's just a normal day, when checking your favorite game news site, you hear about a new game that is in the making that really gets you excited.

Only to let you down when it is released, due to a lack of polish.

No, I am not talking about the general state of completeness or how bug free the game is. ..

I am talking about the graphics.

"But CalebG," you might ask, "you are a game designer, you should know that gameplay should be the deciding factor over graphics!" And I stand firm with that point that yes, indeed, game design should be the holding factor, not game art. But how does game design hook and keep the player playing, when the player isn't even attracted to the graphics.

The game that I most recently exprienced this was Warhammer Online. I found the game great on many levels, with many small innovations, or deviations from the norm. Combat was rather fast paced, like City of Horoes on steroids, but yet keeping the "intellegent" factor of games like World of Warcraft. Mythic kept close to the Warhammer canon, and they have essentially created a world that would make any Warhammer fan squeal like a stereotype japanese school girl with pigtails who just saw a cute cat doing something... cute.

The art direction was great, however, the actual quality was lacking.

  • Low poly (polygon) counts of models.
  • Low resolution textures.
  • Low detail in said textures.
  • Poor Animations.
  • Color schemes almost seem like it wasn't picked well.

I understand the dilemma that Mythic faced; quality or performance? However, as much as I hate to do so, let's compare the quality between WAR and World of Warcraft.

Just as a refresher for those who might have forgot about WoW's artstyle, and for those who have not played WoW, which is probably a total of 1 of you.

  • Low poly count of models and maps.
  • Mid level resolution textures.
  • Low detail textures.
  • Decent animations.
  • Well picked colors schemes.

Low Poly Count

As Blizzard has so expertly demonstrated in Warcraft 3 and WoW, it is possible to "cheat" and go the low polygon route, which takes up a significant portion of processing power (be it on the general processor, the graphic processor or both).  In fact, I believe that WoW might have a lower poly count then WAR even!

Texture Resolution and Detail

The "skin" for an otherwise blank model, this is what gives the character or that bit of architecture or doodad it's graphical appeal. Blizzard decided to put more focus on this. The item or doodad in mind might not be overly detailed (i.e. Age of Conan), and in fact is generally simplified, but it looks good, because there are no jagged lines like in WAR (as in they accidentally used a "aliasing filter" instead of an "anti-aliasing filter". Detail in the textures are always kept to a reasonable amount; even most of WoW's tier armor sets are generally speaking, simple, compared to what some other games do.

Animation

I will admit now that I am an animation critic as I feel that if the model is the skeleton, the texture the skin, then animation is the soul of the character. WAR fails sorely in this point. Almost all animations are in dire need of polish. WoW managed to capture the essence of each animation well. So, while not overly eleborate, it feels... natural if you will, playing a WoW character.

Color Combinations

Now this is a sensitive topic for WAR, and is a point I am willing to overlook, since Mythic tried hard to keep to the original art of Warhammer.

Summery

So why did WAR end up the way it has, and WoW ended up on pretty much the otherside of the spectrum, even with same, or similiar details?

I believe it lies in the general art style. While WoW has specificially altered the art style to cater to the limitations, WAR has tried to stick to the art found in the many rulebooks in Warhammer. The good part is, current Warhammer players can identify with it. The bad part is, you suddenly find yourself very confined to the limits of what you can do.

Of course, this is just what I observe and believe to be; and strictly my own opinions. If you love WAR's art style and graphic fidelity, please go on and enjoy that awesome game!

Just one of the random topics I have which is still open to debate. WAR finds itself in a very interesting position now; keeping the overlaying artstyle, having to make sure it runs smooth (thus it's unpolished "Beta" feel, at max settings.) for the inevitable mass PvP that is going to take place.

However, since Warcraft is Blizzard's own IP, they have alot more freedom with WoW. If they wanted to fit all 10 million gamers into the server, and had to render all the avatars as stickmen, on a white background, they could very well do it assuming no one has already copyrighted the stickman.

Next topic:

Pacing in WAR vs WoW! (I'm not a WoW supporter, they have just done many things right. After this topic however, it would be WAR's turn to win a lil ;) )

I play Crysis on maxed out settings. What's performance anyway?

Performance, or polish, is making sure that the player gets the best out of their current configuration.

The Crytek engine shows that with incredible detail, physics and effects.

WAR however, has little of those, and yet, feels slightly sluggish even with a computer that can run Crysis with maxed out settings.

And as a side note, I think of Crysis as a benchmark program with gameplay elements just to allow you to well... do other stuff. You should try Farcry 2, if you havn't already!

with all the due respect, I guess that the flaming from WOW players has to do much with the way it turned out not the graphics, the quality of players these days is way beyond the standard, people are becoming maggots fed by what others tell them, I respect that you took the time to write something from your own perspective instead of just copying the trashy style here. war has similar graphics to AOC and LOTRO ,I tried that game and found it that what attracted me wasn't the graphics but the XP system and the scenrio.

I just wish people quit comparing a fully designed / studied project like WOW with a new one because its not fair at all.

I would like to add a little bit of input on my thoughts about the graphics in WAR....

I played WAR on 2 different computers. First was a low-end PC, second was my brand new PC.

On my first PC, the graphics from WAR were a mixed bag. The poly counts about the same, but when it comes to textures, WAR actually does have the edge. If you look at screenshots of classes right next to eachother, you will see there is far more detail then the WoW counterparts. Animations did seem pretty crappy, so I ended up shutting them off except for myself for performance reasons. Color schemes... I'm not sure what your complaint is, unless you didnt like the art of your chosen realm. Order was always bright and cheery typically, and destruction was dark and gloomy.

On my new PC, I can honestly say - anyone on a high-end PC that has complaints about the graphics is crazy. They are not the best graphics I have ever seen, but they are better then any MMO out there aside from AoC probably - which I should note only has good graphics in certain areas. The character models not only have much more detail then their WoW counterparts, but the added reflections in their armor from the light sources etc when you have your graphics on max... just look beautiful. Shadows make a big difference although WoW has those now as well - but those make things look better in both games. I find the light effects mixed with the shadows give this game a bit of an edge over WoW in that department.

The animations look far better then they did on my old PC as well. Light effects make a big difference here, and they look much better when they are running in high FPS. Especially once you get to higher levels and see all the crazy explosions going on all over the place.

My only complaint with the graphics is certain order classes seem a bit bland with their current looks, and some of the environments seem a bit too similar to

i agree with you... having a playstation 3 and xbox 360... when i play mmorpg.. i want high poly count / high texture / high detail.. and THEN i look at the gameplay...  so playing World of Warcraft.. i dont wanna go back to it.. simply 'cuz i play Metal Gear Solid.. Little Big Planet.. Soul Calibur.. those games look beautiful.. then i play a crappy low quality game like wow or ragnarok.. and im like 'meh'..

thats why im currently loving AION korean beta.. and simply cant wait to see Blade & Soul in action.. 'cuz if Gears of War used Unreal Enginer and looked this dam good.. i can only imagine how B&Soul would be like

Don't know, when I tried WAR I focused on the gameplay instead of looking the graphics, I found them "poor" for a p2p game anyway.
But I don't think Wow and War should be compared on that side because WAR has a more crude feeling.
