Back into The World of Warcraft...

Category: Default Game: World of Warcraft Posted on Nov 20, 2008 8:31 pm

I swore off World of Warcraft, saying that I am never going to go back to the game I keep losing intrest in, and have enough characters to out-level even a GM character.

But, being a Collectors/Limited edition whore, a friend just asked me if I would like to get the Collector's Edition for Wraith of The Lich King, I said yes without thinking. Only realizing what I said a minute later, he has already made the purchase order, and I will be having a copy sent to me in a week or two.

So I guess, I will give WoW a spin one more time.

Why did I not want to play WoW anymore? Do I hate it?

Actually, contrary to that, I do like the game. A whole lot. However, like in any other MMO I have tried, it fails to provide that one niche playstyle that I want. I have tried pretty much all the classes, but they all miss that... "something" to make me feel just that bit more involved and at home with the game.

What is that something? I just call it the "class mojo". Basically, the combination of the mechanics and art style of the character that kinda makes it what it is. For example, if you removed the ability to dual wield from the rogues, it might make it just that bit more "un-rogue like" that would put off most players from playing that class.

So yeah, I can't really "fit in" most of the classes, even with the various talent builds in mind. But is that it?

Not quite.

I have to admit that I have a rather weird pace when it comes to MMOs. I tend to blaze through the starting content (including absorbing all the lore, mind you) like a bookworm getting his hands on the latest series from his favorite novellist, but slow down once the "mid-point" has been reached.

Ya know, in WoW, it probably is hitting 40 (yes, not quite mid), where you get your first really play-style affecting talent, your mount, and depending on your class, the ability to upgrade your equipment to the next tier (i.e. chain to plate).

However my friends would still be slowly chugging on at 20 or 30, and I would just loose intrest then and roll a new character class to try out or maybe in the roleplay server (I know... "ooooo... you roleplay... dork.). Of course, by the time they do hit my level, I get bored and leave the game to try something out.

So, for WoW, with such a long lifespan (excluding Everquest, don't get me started on that...), I have managed to create more characters then I can count on both fingers and toes with my repeated unsubscribing and resubscribing, and with various bunch of friends all playing in different servers wanting me to join them.

And none of those characters at near 60, whilst those friends I have "abandoned" are now raiding for their Tier 998 equipment.

Which now leaves me at a tough spot when I go back in, again.

With everyone starting at 50 (was it 50?) as a Dread Knight or with 70s trying to hit 80s, the 50 and below are going to be well, lonely.

So, if any WoW players read this, could you actually shed some light on this? Will the lower levels be really quiet because of that?
