Why girls love cute mmorpg

Category: Online game Game: Default Posted on Sep 29, 2009 5:32 pm

Since my college days I've seen online games come and go. Believe me or not I've been a player since 2nd year of college (so you can guess now what my age is?xD) up until now. Though I am not active at forums and blogs that time, I am more on "playing the game" and "looking for guides" than blogging what I do everyday. So yeah I just started blogging this year for two reasons, firstly I love mmo games it keeps me entertaining and away in reality for a while that I want to share this to some people out there to meet new friends and second to contact my friends who are in different countries but love to play online games. Well, global online games are the only games I played due to the fact that I can reach my friends out there (different countries I mean)

Based on my years in MMORPG industry, most of the poeple I talked to in-game or chatted girls have penchant for cute MMORPGs.

First, how do we define “cute”? There really is no accepted “industry standard”. For me, as long as it’s chibi or SD (Super Deformed, in the Japanese-anime style), that’s cute. Ragnarok, Rose, FlyFF fall into this category. Meanwhile, the full anatomically-correct games such as Perfect World or RF would fall into the other end of the spectrum.

Why Girls love Cute MMORPGs

  • PC Spec - We all know that not all have great pc specs specially with girls who don't know much about computers. Even on both internet cafes or home, only few girls know how pc works or what is needed to make the pc functional and running. Because of this they ended up having only the basic need of a computer which leads to normal specs. Cute games don't eat too much banwidth on pc making it a friendly user to most computers even if it's not that upgraded or older versions. This simplicity wins popularity to girls and the good part is they can ask friends to come along and play with them.

  • Cute is Cute - Do I have to explain this?? As long as it's a chibi and the character resembles to anime or so they are cute!!! I love cute characters specially with expressions making them cuter. No exceptions, even if the the story line is lame it's easy to get distracted on those adorable characters making you to try the game before you could even say; "This is a lame game and I just realize that just now!"

                                                                                                                                                            Image from Dragonica Online

  • The girls are there - Admit it, guys. It's easier to find a girl playing a cute MMORPG than a hard-core game or FPS right? You can even collect girls in-game either inviting them to party or guild. It can even lead to romance making it a "worth-playing" game.
  • Gameplay - Cute MMO gameplay is not complicated. This means that it will be easier for anyone to teach even a non-gamer to play the game. The fact that the "cuteness" distracts a lot to be patient in studying the gameplay, the community that is strong and alive itself is also a plus. And because it's accessible to everyone this leads to good a community and a lot of gamers to play the game. Either you're a hard-core, average or non-gamer. As long as everyone is talkative and friendly it gives pleasure in playing the game. Heck, you can even teach your sister or mom to play the game.

  • Pop culture - Cute MMO's have transcended more than the game. Because they are cute in the eyes of people a lot of videos, cosplays, fan art or even flash games which the game as the base can be easily distributed or share to everyone. This can lead to merchandise (both official and unofficial) that were made for game(s). It's the truth that cute items are really "in-demand" to buyers even if they don't know what they just bought.

Although a lot of gamers are graduating to the more “hard-core” games. I still think there is a HUGE demand and market for cute MMOs. If analyzing the trends will be the basis, I’d predict that new cute MMOs with innovative features with regards to gameplay and community functions will sell well. A game that would drive all the current and new users into one big community where user-generated content will be crucial to keep it all alive and “sticky”.

This is just my comment, you can make your own comment too~

P.S.

-And no, the character picture above from Luna Online is NOT my character.. Will be posting my character from both Luna and Dragonica later on. I so love them!

If you want a good pair of warm UGG boots that you can wear during the cold months for years into the future, but don’t want to spend a fortune then you need cheap uggs. Ugg Matala Sandal are a typically quality sheepskin boot with leather outer and strong rubber soles on the bottom. The Tasmina UGG boot is the center of all sheepskin shoe companies shoe lines for a reason.

Lol, I do love generalizations :D!

Girl here who's a fan of cute MMOs...but...not really for the reason stated in this blog. I know a hell lot about computers; more than some guys typically do when it comes to choosing between a NVIDIA and a ATI. I play cute MMOs because of the customization and the overall attractiveness of both the female character, the items you can get, and the environment. Look at LotRO. Those are some fugly female characters. Just plain UGLY D: I hate it when games get male oriented and leave females with giant boobs or just plain stupid looking. Cute MMOs are just cute n_n

I don't really like those games.. Specially Luna and Holy Beast... Their chars.. are seriously too cute and somehow deformed.. Ether Saga is really boring..

Dragonica is great, never seen it as a "cute" type of game just a great game, since it is fun.

I'd also like to state that I know a lot of girls that play FPS, they're quite fun and I do play them myself. If you're looking for a game that's cute, fun and has anime try Emil Chronicle Online.

I usually can't stand cute.. I prefer some game that defines sexy, like Perfect World even though I don't play it,

Mabinogi is also a good game.

Well that's just my opinion.

Most of the gamer girls I know only like cute games if they like anime as well, if they dont like anime they usually think the game is lame or weird.

Not all gamer girls are anime fans. Most of the gamer chicks I know personally are FPS gamers (I have no clue why FPS games attracts females alot, especially alot of good looking ones, but it does.)

Well, I kind of have to disagree with girls not knowing much about computers. I'd rather generalisize that as most *gamers* don't know much about computers. Why? Because they don't need to, these days everything is done ready for you, and if not, when you buy a new computer, they'll send someone over to set it up for you etc. As a girl (I may be an exception for I've been gaming since I was 5, my dad's a computer engineer and my brother just graduated as one, on top of that I'm the only girl in the fam), I find that the guys I know through MMORPGs, know hardly nothing about computers. It's like, you try to explain them why something isn't working for them and they're just completely lost. I think that's just like saying that girls don't game (I can tell you that back when I started playing MMORPGs, they really didn't - a girl in a game was a miracle), when clearly, at a constantly increasing amount, they do.

I don't necessarily like "cute" MMO's, but I do find that the way my character looks is very important when playing an MMORPG. I couldn't careless whether the game is anime-styled or more realistic, I just want a good game! ^_^

I have different styles for mmorpgs.I love rohan and requiem style, yet I also like seal online and rose online style. It really depends on the games art style and play to me.

Well not all girls like cute little characters. I personally like the hardcore and realistic games (specially FPS games). And I beg to differ that girls know don't know the computer as well as guys. The ratio of females to males in the computer science or programming and such industries is gradually increasing. Nowadays, maybe it's the little girls or old ladies who don't know the PC as well as guys, but the load of teenagers should know how to tune their PC as well as the guys do. I'd say the hardcore, realistic games are perhaps for the more mature female audience (since no one would expect a 9-year old to be playing COD), but not too old (neither would a housewife be playing Counterstrike).

Oh and DSS what your saying is somewhat true their are girls who do know alot about computers and all but you cant deny that a VERY large majority of girls in the world love cute stuff....actually I cant imagine a girl who doesnt love cute stuff even teh ugliest chick I know probaly still loves puppies.

Well I'm a guy and I prefer cute MMO's over the more realistic ones but I've been playing MMO's for awile now so I play em all but for me the game either has to be a cute MMO or really good graphics. In the end though I think it all comes down to Gameplay and Community. =]

Even as a guy I have to say this is completely sexist. Well...let me clarify.

Yes there are probably more girls in cuter MMO's, but that isn't enough to say ALL girl's love cute MMO's. The only girls I could imagine playing cute MMO's are under the age of 10, and I have 8 real female friends and about 20 online female friends and most of them do not play cute MMO's at all.

I do NOT approve of your reasons at all. They are pretty offensive to be honest. "Girl's don't know computer tech, girls like everything dumbed down, girls like fitting and being totally up to the latest culture, and girls love everything cute". The girl I imagine who likes this is the little 10 year old girl who does nothing but watch Teen Disney and acts like a "dumb blonde" (YES, I AM BEING STEREOTYPICAL. That's the point)...and most of them don't play videogames.

Maybe where ever you work or wherever you live, you find that a huge amount of girls like cute MMO's as to opposed to "hardcore". Fine. But I can't imagine that an overwhelming majority of girls play cute MMO's, and the only ones i can imagine that do so are so young that it's illegal to try and "get it on" with them anyways. If i wanted to meet girls so i can date them, it's called reality. Yes it's a scary thing reality..you can't just point click, kill, chat, do quests, like any "cute MMO" or ANY MMO as a matter of fact. Is Perfect world any harder than Flyff? Absolutely not!

I'm sorry but, although there might be compelling evidence and stereotyping plausibility of your claim, I think you're neglecting a large minority.

No offense, but if people make a serious effort to find girls through an MMO, then thats pretty sad.

I mean, sure, you can find girls through MMORPGs and some people really do find true love through them, and i'm not denying that, but really people should make an effort to meet girls/boys in real life first. Getting to know somebody through an MMO is also riskier, because you don't know if that cute "Girl" you're chatting with is a real girl, a really bored boy(liek me xD) or a creepy stalker that you really don't need in your life.

I'm one of the odd girls who doesn't fit this.   Geek by nature, tech support by trade, build my own PCs.  I like the medieval/fantasy style MMORPG with more realistic or realistic-anime/"Barbie" proportioned characters.  I prefer 'elegant' over either 'sexy' or 'cute'.  I don't find the SD style particularly appealing.  Why?  Because what catches my interest in a game is the CLOTHES!  xD  Yes, I'm a geek, but such a girl!  My thing is collecting all the different outfits my character can possibly wear, so I can dress her differently for roleplay depending on the situation.  Of course in the dungeon she'll wear whatever has the highest stats, but if there's a choice between looks with the same stats, I'll buy the nicer looking one even if it's more expensive.  ^.^

But I do admit, what draws me first to a game is the graphics -- the characters' faces, hair, clothes, the scenery in towns.  Also a plus is having 'good' and 'evil' races, who are sworn enemies by world story but not by game mechanics; where it's up to the players to decide to be enemies or friends.  Of course later comes whether the gameplay requires skill to play a class (to be clear, requiring skill and attention is good); and the community on the server.  But if the graphics don't grab my interest, I won't stay around long enough to find out about the gameplay and community.

I've been playing games online since I was 9 years old, but I'm a girl and know plenty about computers.  I sort of disagree that girls don't know as much about their computer setups than guys.  Maybe older women don't, I don't know, but my friends and I know about computer specs just fine and if not we know how to look up what the newest stuff is.  I do like cute games a lot tho but I also love to make a cute character in a world that isn't as cute.  In games like Aion that have very detailed character creation, I've been able to make very cute characters that look like 7 year olds and stuff and to me it's fun to play.  Guys seem to like to make their female characters as "sexy" as possible.  I personally like mine more cute than sexy.  Although I'm addicted to cats so sometimes I do play sexy catgirl characters in games with catgirls, but often I will instead turn to play the smaller character like Tarutaru in Final Fantasy.  Eventually the gameplay of the game wins out over the cuteness to me.  I haven't even found a permanent game that I stay to play long term yet, I just play a little bit a day and a different one each time.

I've been playing online games for quite some time as well. Do you remember Ultima Online? ( I think it's actually still alive and well!)  that was my first when online games were just getting started. Cute for me in online games is the Final Fantasy type characters. Un-cute is WoW characters.(Just my opinion) I'm just now starting to get into the free online games so I'm still 'testing the waters' so to speak for alot of them.
