Doctor Professor's thoughts on anime styled MMOs
Category: Rants Game: Default Posted on Sep 10, 2009 6:58 pm
My next review wont be for a short while ( I like to get to around half max level before reviewing a game, and do it with more than one class in games I really like!) So this is a little something to keep myself busy. I hope everyone enjoys it.Remeber, I love anime and there ARE good Anime mmos out there. Ill have to review the 2 of them someday.
You know what's really depressing? Anime-styled MMOs. Now, I love anime. In fact, honestly, ask me any anime and I’ve probably seen it and owned it. Same thing with J-RPGs.But why are Anime Styled MMOs so very different from the anime we see and the console J-rpgs we play?
Alright, the world in anime-styled mmos is always so... ridiculous. For once I would like to play an anime-styled mmo that takes itself seriously. Would anyone else like to say "Woah, Epic" every once in a while rather than laugh at the fact that your fighting moving poop?(WindySlayer) Then theres the backgrounds an environments. Always the same, but thats all things I guess. Start off in a forest, move into a plain with the main town in it, get over loaded with quest and new npcs before realizing its easier to grind and go off into the not so new and exiting world of predictable environment cliches. I mean, given that all the anime-styled mmos were getting now were released between 4-6 years ago in Korea and or Japan. I had waited for Mabinogi and seal online since thier release in Korea, such a long wait, Am I alone?
Then theres the character customization, ugh, anime-styled character customization. Its so sad when all I expe
ct from an anime styled mmo is to be able to change my hair color and hair style between more than 7 things for each. But most of the time I DONT GET THAT! I'm no professional but what could be so hard about changing the hue on the texture a bit? Is it so difficult? Oh, and then there’s the mmos with a character select. Guh, just make a single player game why not? It doesnt matter if Ive literally got atleast 120 mes running around! The only games I know of with actual customization are Mabinogi, la tale, and dream of mirror. Height, hair style, hair color, eye color, skin color male, female. That’s all I ask I mean, Zoom in on that image on the right. THATS character customization.
Cliché Cliché Cliché. Cliché environment, Cliché Classes, Cliché bad anime hairstyle. Its like its a law that the class set in an anime game can in no way be original. Has to contain a swordie, thief, mage, priest (can be a branch from mage) and archer (can be thief). If any other classes are in it they have to branch off so you cant be them until level 70. Wonderking was the worst case of this but Wonderking was perfectly aware of how cliché it was.
The WORST part of anime-styled mmos have to be the quest. Forget the fact that a good chunk of the time I can’t understand characters, letters being replaced by boxes, and some punctuation marks by question marks. Let’s look passed the fact that the NPC's speech was probably translated by trusty old google.com. No, What I’m talking about here is the Actual Dialogue. The quest are always so lackluster they might as well just shorten it down to "Go kill 10 ______ and I will give you 5 ______" and stop pretending anyone cares about any consistent story line that may or may not exist.
Ok, Fact is, I love anime, From Toradora to Eureka 7. Im a constant watcher. However, I cant stand when someone zero effort into an anime mmo. The guys down at devcat migh tbe working on that but... Well with Mabinogi heroes they might as well just stab thier fan base. All of it.
Doctor Professor Out.
