Doctor Professor's thoughts on anime styled MMOs

Category: Rants Game: Default Posted on Sep 10, 2009 6:58 pm

My next review wont be for a short while ( I like to get to around half max level before reviewing a game, and do it with more than one class in games I really like!) So this is a little something to keep myself busy. I hope everyone enjoys it.Remeber, I love anime and there ARE good Anime mmos out there. Ill have to review the 2 of them someday.

You know what's really depressing? Anime-styled  MMOs. Now, I love anime. In fact, honestly, ask me any anime and I’ve probably seen it and owned it. Same thing with J-RPGs.But why are Anime Styled MMOs so very different from the anime we see and the console J-rpgs we play?

Alright, the world in anime-styled mmos is always so... ridiculous. For once I would like to play an anime-styled mmo that takes itself seriously. Would anyone else like to say "Woah, Epic" every once in a while rather than laugh at the fact that your fighting moving poop?(WindySlayer) Then theres the backgrounds an environments. Always the same, but thats all things I guess. Start off in a forest, move into a plain with the main town in it, get over loaded with quest and new npcs before realizing its easier to grind and go off into the not so new and exiting world of predictable environment cliches. I mean, given that all the anime-styled mmos were getting now were released between 4-6 years ago in Korea and or Japan. I had waited for Mabinogi and seal online since thier release in Korea, such a long wait, Am I alone?

Then theres the character customization, ugh, anime-styled character customization. Its so sad when all I expect from an anime styled mmo is to be able to change my hair color and hair style between more than 7 things for each. But most of the time I DONT GET THAT! I'm no professional but what could be so hard about changing the hue on the texture a bit? Is it so difficult? Oh, and then there’s the mmos with a character select. Guh, just make a single player game why not? It doesnt matter if Ive literally got atleast 120 mes running around!  The only games I know of with actual customization are Mabinogi, la tale, and dream of mirror. Height, hair style, hair color, eye color, skin color male, female. That’s all I ask I mean, Zoom in on that image on the right. THATS character customization.

Cliché Cliché Cliché. Cliché environment, Cliché Classes, Cliché bad anime hairstyle. Its like its a law that the class set in an anime game can in no way be original. Has to contain a swordie, thief, mage, priest (can be a branch from mage) and archer (can be thief). If any other classes are in it they have to branch off so you cant be them until level 70. Wonderking was the worst case of this but Wonderking was perfectly aware of how cliché it was.

The WORST part of anime-styled mmos have to be the quest. Forget the fact that a good chunk of the time I can’t understand characters, letters being replaced by boxes, and some punctuation marks by question marks. Let’s look passed the fact that the NPC's speech was probably translated by trusty old google.com.  No, What I’m talking about here is the Actual Dialogue. The quest are always so lackluster they might as well just shorten it down to "Go kill 10 ______ and I will give you 5 ______" and stop pretending anyone cares about any consistent story line that may or may not exist.

Ok, Fact is, I love anime, From Toradora to Eureka 7. Im a constant watcher. However, I cant stand when someone zero effort into an anime mmo. The guys down at devcat migh tbe working on that but... Well with Mabinogi heroes they might as well just stab thier fan base. All of it.

Doctor Professor Out.

cheers for ur link.it looks nice that gundam mmo. only thing i didn't fancy was the chibi version style gundams...i hope it's just for the trailer and not in-game. i rather like normal version ones.

ur article isn't bad.,rather it's good because the points u make about those type of mmos are dead on accurate in my opinion. those kinda mmos aren't good at all. i wish game develpoers such as those of those mmos would stop these kinda of things. i personally think they are making those kinda desgin just to attract our attention as we all know how anime and manga has come to light in world these past few years.

hmm.. i thought almost all mmo got main story quest..( maybe just me )

the 1 with kill this for this reward mainly from side quest..

as for me the 1 that kill my mood playing is repetitive side quest..

just a bit from my view..

Yeah, Thats true. Kill 5x and get 1x is normal for mmos in general.

Heh, kind of true sady. Well a lot anime games expects social interaction much more thou. I  guess thats the story line lolz. That and grinding X_X

Guess an example that's coming out would be ECO, no story whatsoever, but tons of social interaction and you make friends so easyly. Then theres the grinding. lol

Yeah, Ragnarok online was the same way. There were some dramatic quest but nothing so special. Dream Of Mirror surprisingly has a storyline if I remember correctly. I have to go back to that game.

yea  most anime style mmo arn't 2 good. dun know maybe if dot hack sign was an mmo then that would change it or yea what some1 said earlier dragon ball.

DrProfessor replied at 6:56 pm Sep 12,2009
Yeah, dot hack series(one of my favorite series of games/manga/novels/anime) is actually not a real mmo Im afraid. All single player. Though there was a dothack released with online functionality and character customization-- but that was only released in japan. and besides it was years ago on the ps2. My real hope is a dot hack ps3 mmo. Ill have to make that happen some day if no one else will...!

kk listen here pal. u got some things wrong. anime-styled mmorpgs has in no way any relation to anime series/stories. so you wouldn't expect to find the story and content much to the standards of the anime counterpart. these anime-styled mmorpg are just only drawn and characterised in this sterotype "anime" design that everyone seems to catergorised them into. just coz the desgin of the mmorpg is a simialr to the sterotype view of animes, they brand them "anime-styled" mmo instantli. plus the mmo u mention are not animes at all so u can't say they are "anime mmos"..if u want anime mmos...wait for the dbz online...coz now, there is hardly any anime turned mmo game out there(anime mmo). note: anime mmo is not the same as anime-styled mmo. anime mmo is an anime franchise turn to mmo while anime-styled mmo is an mmo where the design is typical of the stereotypical anime drawing style)

kk listen here pal. I said I LOVE anime. Im perfectly aware of the fact that I'm using the word anime in refrence to the art style and not actual anime. Im comparing anime-styled (in otherwords, detailed cartoonish characters) to other online games that are not anime styled. But just for you for pointing it out Ill replace anime with anime styled every time I can. Thanks for the comment. Even though, I hope you didnt dislike the read too much.
Oh, and Ive got a present for you.
Gundam MMO- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5eIQ-tnRrw
I know that I shouldn't expect an amazing storyline that makes sense with dozens of players and great character design like a real anime, but... I just think someone should come along and set the bar a little higher so that is what I expect.

also.... sorry, I accidently deleted your comment above...

"someone zero effort into an anime mmo"
bit harsh? c'mon, give them some credit at least....
I truly agree with the point bout' moving poo though. :3

Ha ha, After ranting so much I tend to want to say something harsh at the end. But Im not talking about Latale, mabinogi, or Dream of Mirror. Im talking about Cash shop cows like maplestory. And a few other choice mmo. I hope you enjoyed the article anyway!
