Classic brawler, Old fashioned fun: Dungeon and Fighter

Category: Default Game: Dungeon Fighter Online Posted on Sep 17, 2009 7:23 pm

Dungeon Fighter is a brawler mmo originally released, and now localized, by Nexon. Dungeon and fighter is one of the few games to get brawling right. Dungeon and Fighter features a 5 diverse characters, dozens of dungeons, and a retro super Nintendo look. Not to mention pitch perfect gameplay. Dungeon Fighter is up for closed beta so find out how you can get a key and join the fun at http://www.dungeonfighter.nexon.net/

I almost just want to skip strait to gameplay… but for the sake of keeping consistent reviews…

PRESENTATION: Dungeon and Fighters graphics are perfectly nostalgic. This might be because it was actually released quite a few years ago but either way it brings back memories of golden days of gaming on the super Nintendo. The graphics are somewhere in between Super Nintendo and Play Station 1. Its not that the graphics are the kind youd just sit around and enjoy, but the nostalgia + gameplay enhances the experience. Dungeon and fighter isn’t your kids game. If you think anime style is only for kids than this should shatter  mis-conceptions. Characters and monsters spray blood every time theyre hit. Its aimed closer  to a teen audience.

CHARACTERS: The characters in Dungeon Fighter all play very differently. Each one has their own traits and great backstory. My first gripe about this game. Characters are completely not customizable Im afraid.I was able to have fun with the first 3 of them.

Slayer: The slayer is fun but I didn’t enjoy him as much as the other two.  The Slayer is slow but easy to get used to. Using swords they have a simple 3 hit combo. The Slayer wakes up one day finding he has slaughtered his family with the arm of a demon, and cant remember any of it. Now, with his arm bound by chains, he drifts around killing monsters. Left: The slayer can gain crazy speed and combos with blade master type skills at hand.

Gunner: The Gunner is undoubtedly the coolest character since dante from devil may cry.  They are a long range character using handguns.  They can kill a monster from across a map. When attacking they are stuck standing still but their range makes up for it.

Fighter: The FAN SERVICE character. This fantastically proportioned character is fast and fun to use. While attacking they move half way across the screen. They have a 4 attack combo and a series of punches and grabs. This was my favorite character to use as it’s the fastest.  When she was young and weak her parents were killed and there was nothing she could do to protect them. So she trained to protect herself. Pushing her body to its limits.

Theres 2 more characters I wasn’t  able to try.

The Mage: Using massive skills that destroy maps of players. Below: A mage can take up an entire screen with thier attack

.

The Priest: Using buffs  and heals for buffs and team mates… as well as an axe.

GAMEPLAY: The Gameplay is absolutely perfect in dungeon and fighter, wouldn’t change a thing. This is exactly what I want in a brawler and I hope others learn from it. When you attack with characters besides the gunner you move forward a little bit, after playing some awful mmos and bad brawlers I realize that people don’t know that if an enemy fliches, the character should automatically move forward with each attack. I always thought gameplay without this feature was ridiculous and made maplestory’s and windy slayer’s.  As you crawl through the numerous dungeons youll unlock new rooms with more monsters and treasure chest to destroy. Theres enough to explore in each dungeon but if you choose to you can just go the fastest path to the boss.

Dungeon and fighter is an extremely fun and satisfying experience. I really enjoyed it and I can say without a doubt this is a 10/10. 9/10 if you care about customization, but I’m really willing to over look that for great gameplay and awesome character backgrounds, I hope you are to. Try it out at http://dungeonfighter.nexon.com/

Even if BOD is a clone, its probably going to be the only available option to those not living in the US. Dungeon FIghter is only available for Canada and the 50 US states so those living in other countries or even the Caribbean (which is in the NA region) cannot play.

Glad to see people agree. Yeah, BoD is a clone, but I don't blame games for cloning. Having more games in the same field just opens up the same genre to more people. Example, I hate maple story and love ghost online.

Dungeon Fighter Online (which is our version, based on DnF but not the name of ours :D ) is a really great game.  People complain about the resolution, but the game was made years ago and is made to purposely emulate the look of old style fighters.  The thing about the hand drawn graphics is you can't just set a new resolution and have them stay the same size, it's not like 3D graphics which can scale the world around you very easily.  They'd have to have drawn the graphics in every resolution for it to work right changing it.  Although I do wish you could somehow just see more of the world around you when you changed resolutions, that just isn't the way the game was made.  It's still really fun.  There is a clone of the game, Battle of Destiny, which looks better to the eye but when playing it doesn't run nearly as smooth or fun.  When the Cash Shop / V.I.P. options come out for the US version, you should get different customization options too (I am told anyway, I haven't experienced it to know for myself).
