Horror MMOs: Possible, or Just Another Dream of Mine?

Category: Ramblings Game: Default Posted on May 27, 2009 9:00 pm

Horror MMOs

MMOs come in all flavors; Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Steampunk, Social (Such as Second Life), Post-Apocolyptic, FPS, and more! But a horror MMO, is it possible? Can there actually be a game, with millions of players, that are absolutely TERRIFIED? I sure hope so.

Current Attempts

The only attempt I currently know of is Requiem: Bloodymare, and honestly? It just doesn't interest me. I've watched videos. Seen the monsters. Went to the website, registered, and installed it. But never once have I played it. Mainly because the videos didn't scare me. Maybe I should give it a chance, but unless you, the reader, can convince me to, I doubt it will stay installed on my computer for long.

So... Blood... and big monsters... this passes as HORROR?

REALLY? Blood + Big Monsters = horror? I don't think so Requiem, I don't think so.

My Ideas on a Horror MMO

My first idea was about the monsters. I wanted monsters that were so unbelievably powerful that put up a real fight one on one. It would basically force you to band together with others in order to survive. Next, since monsters would require you to party, most classes would have party buffs that only take effect when in a party. Your medics would have a +stamina buff and a bonus to their healing abilites. The buffs would grow in power depending on how many players were in the party. Then, I had to think about what era this would be set in. Would it be futuristic, such as Dead Space? Would it be fantasy, like most MMOs? Or would it be placed in modern times, where I believe the most horrific games are placed in, such as Resident Evil (before 4 and 5), Silent Hill, Siren: Blood Curse, and others? I think a modern gameplay style would work the best, but it would make me use the most sensical system for a modern game, FPS.

So, after contemplating quite a few game mechanics, I think I figured out a plot: A maniac has kidnapped hundreds of thousands of people from throughout the world, and has dumped them on a large island unknown to the world, about 500,000 mi. in diameter. The kidnapped people are spread in concentrated spots on the island. The main character starts out waking in the middle of the island, in a small makeshift settlement, with injured and dying people all around. You are greeted by a strange woman, who seems to be the leader of this settlement. She gives you advice as the starting quest giver. You are given a scavenging mission, and at the end of the text, she gives you a stern warning, "If you see any monsters or mutants, STAY AWAY. And if they come after you, RUN. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN BACK TO THIS CAMP. We'll take care of them. Or we'll try, at least."

After completing the scavenging quest and learning some skills such as scavenging, cooking, fishing, weapon and armour creating, and the like, you will have leveled up to level 5. You will then have the choice of a class; Fighter, your main DPS, Medic, the healer, Warrior, the tank, Theif, melee DPS, but is mainly a support class, or Ranger, the ranged DPS. After choosing the class, learning your main skills, and making some makeshift weapons, you are told by the the leader that you need to fight off some monsters. In the middle of talking, a cutscene starts. You hear a dark, evil voice cackling over what seem to be a hidden PA system. He greets you, and welcomes you to the island. He tells everyone on the island that they are part of a game, and if they want to escape, they must lie, cheat, steal, and fight to survive. He also tells you that there are docks scattered over the ends of the island, with boats that have autopilot to the nearest country. After the leader instructs you to find a group of people (players) to escape with, you choose a direction to move in. It's best to travel in day, because night is pitch darkness and you only have a flashlight. Also, at night, voices seem to haunt you, visions appear, invincible murderous maniacs come after you, and the like. You fight monsters, go through dungeons, disarm traps, find weapons, fight wars, and reach the docks, where you must fight a final boss, where you finally escape, and head home... or so you think.

Problems with a Horror MMO

The main problem surrounding a horror MMO is, of course, the horror. Is it possible to cause a state of total paranoia and fear in the player while there are hundreds and thousands of people around him? I believe so. I think the main way to cause this is to make players only trust their closest friends, because people can betray each other and kill them (PK), trick them into a trap where they have to wait for time to escape, or for death by mutant or monster. An example is being trapped in a hanging net and having monsters jumping up and attacking to break it, just wanting to get to your succulent flesh.

The next problem is profitablity. This is the main problem for any MMO. For most companies, profitability decides whether a game will be made or not. I believe this is why there are no good horror MMOs, because the market for them is too small. And seeing as the main fanbase for MMOs is teenagers, I doubt the profits would not be good.

Conclusion

So, in conclusion, I believe that a horror MMO is possible, it just needs the correct direction, and quite a bit of funding.. Blood does not a horror MMO make. Neither to monsters that appear to be strong. Psychological fear is the strongest of all fears, and can be an extremely powerful weapon in games, such as F.E.A.R. 2. All the way throughout the game I was paranoid that something was going to pop out, or sneak up on me, or Alma was going to appear. They had me scared to even play the game, but was good enough to keep me playing. So, one day, I WILL see a horror MMO one day that will captivate the senses and chill you down to the bone.

They need to add some scary movie sound effects. The creepy piano or the sudden loud bang. I don't hear that a lot in games, usually the background is some cheap techno beat. The right background music really  helps in creating a tense horror environment.

I WISH they'd make a good horror MMO sometime soon. Requiem was such a let-down, I had had such high hopes for that game.

Yeah great article, I like your idea too.

I also made thoughts about a horror MMO once and I came up with the FPS playstyle too, I think that would work better than that RPG stuff like Requiem. But yeah, I also think that a few years will pass until we got a decent horror MMO. ;(

I like your article, i've been thinking about just the same, I even tried to conceive how a true horror MMO should be (and before i read your article). And i share the same ideas, only that my idea was about some kind of "collective nightmare" from wich people cant wake up, and something like the ability of transforming your characters in monsters and viceversa, so you never know who's who, and that adds up to me massive paranoia =)

Oh, and i also gave a try to Requiem but all i can say about it is 'nice graphics'.

And again, nice article ^^

First off, great article. Second, to solve your fear in the safety of numbers, instanced dungeons for small numbers of people when you leave the stronghold would solve that problem, especially if you have to be in earshot to talk to your team mates, so you dont always know if anyone else has got got. Damn it if i had the skills to make it i would...

What is a Requiem?

InsanityWarden replied at 7:14 am May 30,2009
A requiem is a funeral mass for Roman Catholics, but Requiem: Bloodymare is a mature MMORPG. Google, my friend, use it.

Now now, currently most of the games wouldn't meet up to your expectations, simply because they did not make it with hardcore HORROR involved. If you wanted that, you could simply play console games or Left4Dead. But your dream is not far off, with the new games being developed around the UnReal 3 engine, games will be more fluid and give you that realistic factor. Beware of what you wish for. Some games in the near future might be so realistic, they might even have to make a new rating for it.

i read your concept and i must say its extremely good... it could work too... it'll make solo guys on lower ranks or of low skill go "oh snap its night" when theyre too far and will make groups more essential for the slightest chance of survival. about the funding... a free to play game with offered extra weapons(better ammunition from a secret trader who requires joining a certain association for instance) and equipment(just like before).

something like that is the little thrill that just everyone is looking for... people without the skill necessary to defend themselves won't go around all alone in the dark unless its *safe*(or so they think, hehe)

lastly, it's true that the market for these games isnt too big... but not making these games won't help it grow bigger :P

I doubt the 'horror' feel is going to last long in an mmo. Such games are played for a much longer time than  singleplayer and co-op games like FEAR and L4D. Players will eventually get used to whatever the game throws at them and they no longer feel frightened. Especially in a situation where you already know you are playing with thousands of other players online and everyone knows how to respond to given situations.

The point is that people will get used to feeling of horror, fright and fear if they are exposed to it on a regular basis. No one would want to make a game when its uniqueness and selling point cannot be sustained.

InsanityWarden replied at 3:15 pm May 29,2009
Very good point. This is why I felt this article was necessary, to explore possibilities. That is my main concern, that a horror MMO would be unable to hold a tight grip of terror over it's player base.

Thank you for the dig and respect. And I am indeed waiting for Secret World, it's just a CGI video and couple screenshots really not showing anything aren't much to get my hopes up. I can't wait until they release more, when I first saw the video I was incredibly excited, but the hype has really dropped for this game from what I've seen.

May be you can expect and wait for SECRET WORLD : DARK DAYS ARE COMING, its an mmo still in development but soon to be release. Talking about horror game that in my list is Resident Evil series, Silent Hill series, FEAR and Fatal Frame series in PS. Those are the only games that makes me really scare to play (but however I finish it lol)

yeah i would like to play an horror game, i agree that requiem isnt horror, more like gore, with lots of blood and dark graphics, it just doesn't scare anyone.

InsanityWarden replied at 8:44 am May 29,2009
EXACTLY. This is the point I was trying to get across. I mean, it's a good game for what it does, I just wouldn't classify it as horror.

Nothing is a horrifying as experiencing a raid wipe in Naxxramas or Ulduar. Bosses so powerful and mobs so numerous that it takes even 25 players many hours to clear. Bosses like Patchwerk so strong that anything less than a well geared tank will die from one hit. Mobs so numerous in Ulduar that you need siege vehicles to survive. And if you're feeling lucky you can pay a visit to Wintergrasp where you'll stand up against hundreds of enemy players in an all-out war.

InsanityWarden replied at 7:25 am May 29,2009
I wouldn't call that so much "horrifying" but more like "absolutely rage inducing in which the entire guild yells at each other for days."

True story.

It is all based on perspective. In REquiem, when it hits midnight in game, the horror omnsters appear, and ive been scared as they chase me out of the fog and what not. But...thats justm y perspective...that may not be scary to most people. All the games mentioned by all players here...is based on their perspective. FEAR made some one pee their pants, Silent hill, made some one else terrified, every ones different. Quiet frankly this is the scariest MMO:

I know what u feel about Requiem.Maybe its a good MMO,but its not a horror MMO. Since i play and watch many "scary things",i dont fear freak monsters any more. Now only 1 game make me fear is counter strike

About online horror MMO,i think its hard to do. Most of horror game use surprise attack to make the scary effect. How can u surprise many players on a large area?

InsanityWarden replied at 8:17 pm May 28,2009
You addressed the main problem, which I addressed ever so lightly in my blog. I think the main way would be to cause paranoia and distrust of almost every player they meet. Sound effects would be key, such as whispers, hearing the sounds of incredibly strong monsters that may or may not be there, etc. Thank you for the great comment though, it made me think.

Oh my. Didn't think there would be someone else that would write about wanting a horror MMO. Main reason I didn't know about this was because the topic was an "off the top of my head thing," and because I don't read the Examiner. They bring shame to Ohio, and I am quite ashamed to have them in my state. :(

Requiem is a good game but the community seems kinda small because of the genre. The mood is dark and gloomy which doesn't appeal to most people.

well..did u even play the game requiem? I mean it's horror for the monsters being so gross and hideous looking. Gave me chills when I 1st played it, but I don't think it's scary. Horror doesn't have to be about actually being frightened of a game. I played the demo for FEAR 2, seriously I loved it, and i have absolutely NO IDEA why people are scared of it.. I really should play the original games, I wanted to, but I can't afford any games right now. xP  The only time I actually jumped was the woman from the wacky talky thing she just talked to you randomly it really surprised me lol.

At the end of F.E.A.R 2 Alma rapes you though but it is indeed a  really scary game. I didnt play the first F.E.A.R. So when I started to play F2, it shocked me because a lil girl suddenly appear in front of the screen and it was so creepy (I actually screamed ) I played the game every night when everyone is sleeping. Its the only time i feel like playing it after playing other games in the morning.

Anyway, great article. diggin it :D

InsanityWarden replied at 7:16 am May 28,2009
Thank you very much! F.E.A.R 2 is the kind of game that MMO makers need to take elements from to achieve my desired effect; a truly horrific MMO. I'll have more articles up soon!
