Aion: On the Fence

Category: Default Game: Aion Posted on Jun 08, 2009 3:21 pm

On the Fence?

Alright, let me be more clear... Aion is one game that I've been indecisive about for a while. I've never been so indecisive about a game, EVER. I've been contemplating pre-ordering the collector's edition, getting the beta code, and if I don't like it, sell it on eBay or the like. There's two problems with that though. One, I'm broke. Flat out, empy wallet, broke. Second, I'm not even sure if the Collector's Edition, while sealed, would sell on eBay if I decide I don't like the game. So I need your help to decide. I'll start by stating what I know about the game, and then you tell me what you know and your opinion.

Pros

This game, which from the video and screenshots I've seen, is the most beautiful MMO I've ever seen. And being a big fan of the CryEngine series, this is a big plus for me.

The flying system, in theory, is pretty damn cool. I don't know how practical it will be, or how much of a bonus it will be to the game, if at all.

The Collector's Edition also comes with a lot of bonus content and in-game items. It also comes with a beautiful figurine, a soundtrack, and posters.

Cons

Whenever I hear about this game, there's one main term that is thrown around; "WoW clone." This bothers me. I played WoW from the release of Burning Crusade to about 3 months into WotLK, and, while I had fun, I quit. WoW started to bore me. And if Aion is a WoW clone, it's going to bore me to tears and I had just thrown away $70 on a Collector's Edition of a game that bores me.

This is my other main problem; P2P. As I said up toward the top, I'm broke. And being a teenager who isn't allowed to get a job and has to make his money through odd jobs and is too old to get an allowance, P2P can be a problem. I can afford one P2P game a month, and that slot is taken by EVE Online, my newest addiction. I don't know if it comes with the first month gameplay, but if it doesn't that shoots through $85 right there.

Grindfest. From what I've seen, that's what it looks like, which really bums me out. When it's more efficient to level through grinding than through quests, that's wrong. And it makes me hate that MMO.

Can YOU Help?

Can you help me make a decision? Post in the comments pros and cons, and I'll add them to the list. Get your friends to help too, because I don't want to be the Johnny-Come-Lately to what would turn out to be a great MMO.

lol, every new MMO out there is a WoW clone apparently. People are always gunna say that because WoW was a very successful MMO and they are the people you SHOULDN'T listen to. Just like any other game out there game creators sre gunna look at what's popular, c how they did it, and make it so much better. They don't have to take nething from the popular game to be a clone to the fanboys. Either way, Aion looks amazing and plays so well, ignore the people that call it a clone, cause every game will be to them, and yes i play WoW, and no I don't think it's a clone.

its a wow clone? kinda, the game is based off of wow but they took wow and turned it into an actual game worth playing.  I paid $90 for wow and burning crusade + 60 day sub, i only played 2 weeks of the sub.. got bored to death.  And for aion.. it is SO MUCH BETTER! It's addicting.  All these people that call it "just another grind game" is 100% retarded.  The game is filled with more than enough quests to keep you occupied and it doesnt require much grinding at all.

One of the pros i liked was the fact that you can get "stigmas" that lets you use skills from other classes. The flying is pretty fun. It is the best looking mmo out there today.

Con would have to be that it wasn't really that appealing to me and reminded me of WoWLK. The hefty p2p price tage is a big turn off. Flying only lasts 1 min.
