Ex-WoW Players - They're a Horrid Bunch
Category: Ramblings of an MMO Addict Game: World of Warcraft Posted on Jul 16, 2009 3:33 pm
Ex-WoW players. Love them or hate them, they can be an undeniable force of hate and bile, both when it comes to World of Warcraft - a game they used to play religiously - and almost any other MMO on this blue Earth.

I'm an ex-WoW player. I started playing World of Warcraft about a year after it was launched and continued to play it until the end of The Burning Crusade. However, towards the end of my WoW life, I became disenfranchised with the game and began to look elsewhere for my kicks. What started as harmless flirting with other MMOs turned into a full-blown crusade to find that game that would topple WoW from its thrown.
Like so many before me, my crusade would fail.
I latched on to Lord of the Rings Online originally, claiming that it did PvE better than any game I had ever played. It didn't matter that between every quest objective there was a 20 minute run. It didn't matter that Monster Play was hideously crap. It didn't matter than the game had one of the most, "laa dee daa," communities I had ever clapped my eyes on. It certainly didn't matter that I hated PvE with a passion. Lord of the Rings Online was a guaranteed WoW toppler.
It didn't happen.
Then came Age of Conan, a game that promised brilliant PvP and mature content (see: nipples). My longing for Age of Conan to succeed where Lord of the Rings Online failed was catalyzed by the fact that I had the chance to fly out to Oslo for the press launch of the game. This isn't anything special to established game journalists but it was my very first outing as a game journalist, so it was something special to me. Needless to say, the game came out and I played with an almost blind obsession. I wanted to be one of the millions that assured that Age of Conan owned WoW properly. I played through the starting area (and didn't like one second of it, but played none-the-less) and got out into the open world... to experience what can only be described as the worst MMO I have ever played. I'm not overly arrogant in the face of reason, so I stopped playing and Age of Conan joined Lord of the Rings Online in the, "could have," category of games to conquer WoW.
Then there was Warhammer Online and that was a grave disappointment for me because - out of the three - Warhammer Online was the only good game I had found. I enjoyed playing it. I enjoyed it so much so that I played it for 2 months none stop... and then stopped. Why I stopped I don't know. It was nothing to do with the game itself. Suddenly, I found myself having commitment issues. Needless to say, it didn't topple WoW.
This pretty much sums up the quest of almost every ex-WoW player I know. They identify a game that looks like it could be remotely good and then begin outlining exactly how it is going to beat WoW. They will bring forth such reasons as critical reaction, game play footage, industry projections, previews etc etc. They go into a state of almost blind hope, pinning their every desire (which is mostly the end of WoWs reign) on any game they chose.
I'm not too sure whether it is this crusade on the part of ex-WoW players or another, hidden element that causes one of the most amusing occurrences in gamers I have ever seen. When you ask an ex-WoW player what they think of WoW, you had better be prepared for one of the most brutal and venomous attacks that you are likely to ever hear. They will cuss and blind about how the game is rubbish. They will bitch and moan about how it is a grind. They will rant and rave about questing, the community, the developers, the graphics, the Murlocs and pretty much anything else they can think of at any given moment. They will NOT - under any circumstances - praise the game. Perhaps the most interesting element of this whole affair is the following: even people who have played WoW for a short period and not liked it will not go into such depth about how poor the game is. Ex-WoW players are a hideous bunch.

However, when you ask them why they played for a substantial period, most will be stumped. It will break their almost-perfect flow of bile and hatred in half, like a hammer breaking a nut. They will stare at you, eyes wide and jaw open, as if you have challenged them with one of the most difficult philosophical conundrums the world has ever known. At this point, one of two things will happen: they will either change the conversation OR they will suddenly describe themselves as having reached a stated of total clarity. In the latter occurrence, they will tell you a story about how blind they were and how clouded their mind was, until one day they saw the game for what it is and pushed back the demons that kept them playing. They will actually treat their position as if they have acquired the answer to one of this world’s great questions.
If all else fails, they will launch their attacks directly at the creators of the game - Blizzard Entertainment.
