More like an FPS with an online multiplayer component attached onto the game and it doesn't excite me as much as it should. When I was 14, I used to play Unreal Tournament online, where they had a feature titled 'Assault', where one would attack and another would defend.

There was also a total conversion mod which allowed players to defend an important area against 100s of bots, Defence Allance pushed this alot further, then Return to Castle Wolfenstein added 64 player support in their online games.
Also UT has ngWorldStats, where servers would gather up the data and set them to a website which will set out to see who is the best player out there, there was 100,000's or millions of players listed on the website, with there unique player name, it also worth noting that not many players noted this feature. It gathered everyone from multikills, collecting power-ups, health, weapons and etc... it was really specific in what the players did and their habits. (I was known as 'NonKillingMachine' back in my UT and Deus Ex days, back in 1999 to 2001).
They added ngWorldStats with most of their multiplayer games back in early 2000s, it was a service which which tracked alot of games with millions of players and uploaded the results on a website back then.
The best part about all those multiplayers was that players was allow to set up their own servers on their computers. It still happens, however it done on the servers with most MMOFPS, however they simplify it, however they only display the top 10 players on the front page and a league table onto another area of the website.
Considering MMOFPS has been out for some time, with games like Soldier Front and American Army, and third person games such as Gunz and S4 League, it's all the same thing.
The only differences I noticed from today's 'MMOFPS' to what they had in UT and Quake 3 is that players earn in game cash, which they can buy in-game items. however is that it? That alittle feature and it gets away with it by being called an MMOFPS. The games still have deathmatch. capture the flag and etc...
Gunz game mode 'Quest' take it further, by allowing the player to kill NPC's, with 4 of your friends.
American Army is the same thing with there 'deathmatch', however it's still a deathmatch, with reworked mechanics. 16 and 32 players in a deathmatch doesn't cut to be called an MMO.
After the mass popularity of MMO's in our time of boardband, it has allowed players to community, go onto advertures or quest and explore alot more. Maybe an FPS which allows the player to walk around in a total open world, armed with a sword or a gun and has an inventory with items to pick up, etc.. Deus Ex did that, maybe someone should make an MMOFPS with an grided inventory screen, with useable items like food, smokes and other world items to give to NPC's.

Maybe run into the forest and kill ghosts, aliens or armys of bio-hazard creatures or something and have a story that not only told by NPC in person, but maybe have a phone, which the story is also told thru. Maybe have a phone to call other players aswell and allow players to talk via mic. Where that kind of adverture?
Now maybe I expect alittle too much, or when the technologies in network improve, Maybe I would see an MMOFPS like this, however for now, why would I call Gunz an MMO? I may as well be playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare if I want to play a online first person shooting game.
Don't get me wrong, many players enjoy shooting the held out of one another, (or bots), considering it's very popular, however don't get fool by the term 'MMOFPS' in today's world of MMO games.
The upcoming game 'MAG' for the PS3 may the worthy name of MMOFPS, up to 256 players in one match in a total free for all, and maybe 'All Points Bulletin' it easily describes the name 'Massive' and it will enlighten everyone an 'MMOFPS' should be.
