The guilt of missing out in WoW

Category: Default Game: Default Posted on Nov 04, 2009 4:51 am

I would say enjoyed playing Warcraft 3 during my college years, my aims to learning what strategy has taught me alot, also considering I've played Homeworld, Starcraft and Age of Empires. Warcraft 3 and The Frozen Throne expansion pack was some of my best days and I remember spending time playing this awesome game.

Some of my best days

World of Warcraft was no different. This time it was an MMO. The first time I've heard of this was from the newspaper about a poor girl who died from it. I ever was focused in video games 4 years ago, the reason was I was focusing on my life and working out a bit. However, not until now, I jumped back onto the gaming wagon. I ever knew a clan would love WoW and another side would hate it without a good rationalization.

Such awesomeness which I wouldn't want to miss

Come to think about it, I ever really did give World of Warcraft a good chance, however since then, I've looked into the Diablo series and I've came to the idea that Blizzard are lazy when it comes to making a 'video game'. They make a good video game mechanically, however when it comes to designs, they've ran out. I've seen alot of Knights, Swordmans and Rifleman in my life and I am beginning to wonder how many times they would simply re-use it.

However I do have a close friend who does play World of Warcraft, he's enjoying it and when I think about it, considering I enjoyed Warcraft 3 and I had a fun time playing the game, there a guilt that I know I'm missing out. This is feeling I have, I would call myself a gamer, however knowing I'm going to miss out in World of Warcraft and know it all my life, isn't a pleasant feeling and knowing that I would play the game wouldn't satify me as much.

It may be the animation aswell, I've seen the art direction before, the riflemen with the beards and the cartoony animations, it's good, however I think I know what I'm getting into, only to find that I've seen it all before. Why would I put myself in the same world again?

Screenshot of someone else's memories

It's this guilt that so strong that I feel that I'm not really part of what an MMO is not really about. I've played some other MMOs, but World of Warcraft is too strong, it's unresistable to some users, however I know how to resist it. It feels like a gift, compare to those that have played it. Maybe a sense of pride because I've playing Warcraft 3.

The story is the bestest part of the Warcraft series, I enjoyed the story the most, it was interesting to say at least, it wasn't the best story of all times (Play 'Deus Ex' and you'll see how exciting the story is), however it was fun to see how the characters behaved and changed the story and missions. It easy to get into it, however at the same time, I'm edged between knowing what happened to Athras, Sylvanas, Illidan Stromrage and the rest of the cast or simply just forgetting about it. I live in the UK aswell, so I'm used to hearing tales of knights, warriors and swordmans.

If anyone liked World of Warcraft, play Warcraft 3, you're missing out on a classic.

Another note, non-related to MMOs: Age of Empires was the worst strategy experience ever... considering the hype back in 1998 and the interesting focus of technology research to improve your units in strategy games, the levels were long and began to dry out and were simply boring, it wasn't worth playing. Age of Emprie 2 wasn't worth the campaign, unless you want to sit throught 2 to 4 hours of battles during the end of the game. Play AoE 2 you want a good multiplayer matches. I've heard a few things about Age of Empires 3, try this game if you want. Never buy the first AoE, you'll save alot of money and more importantly time.

Also take note that the Dungeon Keeper MMO is going to be released in Asia :(

Note: Changed the AoE bit, due to reaction and also edited to more rational paragraph.

Stay FAR AWAY, if this is ever made, it may become a BAD MMO experience, despite the good looking 256 colour graphics of the first game.

Everytime I download and try WoW I uninstall after casting a spell that makes me stand still for 10 seconds. I don't like the way it looks either. Not for me.

Age of Empires 1 was slow, 3 was crap, but 2+expansion was the best. The games didn't take any longer than another rts if you knew what to do. The series has a "build a semi-civilization" then take out your opponent, not "build unit maker X  then upgrade facility". At least AoE put effort into making the building up and battles what they would be if it was real life. The majority population of RTS fans enjoy it; sorry that you don't like it because it's not your thing.

You may of misunderstood what I wrote... AoE was 'hyped' back in 1997 was interesting because of the focus of researching technologies which enable units to grow more powerful. Let just say computers were powerful enough to do that when Age of Empires was developed.

Before, games like Dune and Warcraft 2 simply allowed you to build buildings and units. Age of Empires was the first game to add the technologies and it's effects within the gameplay, which is why it got the hype.

Actully, I also going to change the AoE bit to something more rational... Personal apologies if I ever dishearted anyone because of it.

I can agree with you completely. I enjoyed Warcraft III alot. I quited wow once, at the end of the vanilla era. Joined back at the end of Burning Crusade (a month before Lich release). In that month i feelt like I missed a lot from this addictive game. Now, I stormed to complete Lich King, unitll the Crusader instances (3.2) and i quited again. ....But I still follow RSS feeds with news and updates.......:D

Its not just you.

I remember being over a friend's house once, he let me try out WoW on his comp. At the time, i was majorly addicted to runescape, k.

So i tried it out. Now, see i didn't know all the gaming shit that I know now, so back then, i took one look, just killed ONE ENEMY, and i knew that i wouldn't like it. Hell, I still wince when I see games that are hyped as "WoW-killers" or attempt to produce a WoW-like game. You know why? BECAUSE WOW SUCKS. MAJORLY.

*End of story*
