7 J-RPG Hates (And What Needs To Change)

Category: SoraNoKiseki Game: Default Posted on Feb 05, 2009 1:27 am

I've found a nice read on oxm.co.uk about 7 J-RPG hates, quite interesting, I mean what he listed in the article, these hates, are apropos the advantages in my eye, that's what makes J-RPG more fun than western RPG. Feel free to disprove me. however for some reasons many my friends say they hate J-RPG (it's not like "like or dislike", they said HATE) I don't figure it out, do you know anyone who hate too?

Quotes from oxm.co.uk

Here are seven ways that Japanese RPGs could change for the better, starting with the most important...

1. Stop with the kid characters joining your party.

Nearly every JRPG this generation has seen a childlike or childish character joining your wandering group of adventurers and yet none have been either sweet or funny. You're on a do-or-die mission and you want to bring a nine year old with you for 'comic relief'? What the hell's wrong with you?

2. Villains have to be cool.

Looking at the Lost Odyssey poster across from my desk reminds me how crappy (bad guy) Gongora's design is. There's been a lack of truly memorable villains in the genre lately and I have to go back to the 90s to find someone that really stood out.

Wouldn't you want to clash with someone whose character you had a grudging respect for and was in better threads than you?

3. Change is good.

You're finally able to afford that piece of stat-boosting armour with the classy name. You enter into the menu, equip it...yet come out and your character is still kitted out in the same clothing they started the quest in thirty hours ago. One, it doesn't let us relish in seeing the fruits of our labour and two, how do we believe our hero has made the transition between whining teenager to ice-cool monster-killer if he hasn't got the kit (and scars) to prove it?

then I'd like to share my favorite J-RPG: the Legend of Heros: Sora No Kiseki series
Here is the S-Break show (or S Craft) of all characters, really amazing and exciting

I love JRpgs <3 I like them better then western actually..also these games are mostly in the past. So I don't think they had a really good graphics to make them look better. Everyone has their on style too I guess o.o;. For lost oddesy I think they made him look ugly on purpose XD Sometimes they make the bad guys really ugly or really awesome evil looking.  Now they're making less kiddish style and more mature lately these days.

dude only western ppl hate j-rpg so what you're saying is just almost saying j-rpg should just change to western rpg?

j-rpg and western rpg are very diff in almost everyway so you cant just say change this change that if you hate j-rpg then play western rpg and if you hate western rpg then play j-rpg

ppl have diff beliefs they have their own imagination thats why games are created if you like something so real then go jump into the ocean then hunt down those shark or something this is game it doesnt have to be real

and also about vilain have to be cool...no vilain doesnt need to be cool a lot of childrens involved into this what if they want to grow up to be bad guy just like Mr Cool vilain like you mentioned? are you gonna go tell every single one of them that they shouldnt be like Mr Cool Vilian? this is game if you dont like them dont play them if you like them or find them interesting you play them thats all

think more before posting something like this

Hyuk!

This was hilarious and true.

When I fight a villian he should look cooler than I do...that way when I do get around to killing him,

I can get better equips that look awesome!

Haha! Morbid!

I tend to be neutral on the subject. I like some Wrpgs such as Morrowind and KoTR but I like a few Jrpgs like FFvii and SMT.  There are a lot of ones I don't like in both categories.

I didn't realise that the PS1 graphics were taht bad I always rememebred them being better but then again I played that game back when my imagination wasn't retarded.

I don't hate JRPGs, I just feel like they lack some of the substance that makes me like western style games.  For instance, I prefer to make my own character, not play as a predefined one (who usually yends to be the whiny teenager type).  I also prefer the open world style.  I mean, sticking to predefined routes with invisible walls gets boring pretty quick.  However, the character design and all around art style of JRPGs tends to be much more pleasing...  IDK...  To each his own, I guess...

Except turn based battles...  Sorry, just can't do 'em.

I prefer japanese RPG's better than English RPGs. To me Japanese RPG's (if or once translated) is better for they relate to real world stuff. Such as the Final Fantasy Series, Tales, SMT, and what not. American RPG most of the time has nothing to relate to that much except mindless killing and gore such as Assassains Creed or GTA (not sure about GTA if its an RPG or Shooting Game). And there are Heros that are Bastards such as Asche or Jade. Also, not all villains has to be cool, just like Ar Tonelico or Mana Khemia, both final bosses looks simple yet innnocent, yet they have a huge meaning about existance and what not.

Also, no offense, but japanese rpgs are the building blocks of all games. If you look at most of the old games, they all started like that. The only difference is Eastern countries kept, the same modeling, but improved on the graphics. While Western countries, developed a more realistic graphics, but their gameplay still suck.

the only thing i can agree on with this article is the lack of a good villain, but that applies to pretty much ALL games. every generic villain out there is out to destroy the world. we rarely get villains like Dhaos or Mir. they had a purpose other than to destroy the world.

Well...... you have 2 choices, either play realistic boring western games, or play eastern anime style fun games. Your choice.

It's simple really. It's because westerns are western's. They would prefer a gory, blood-spatting action, more mature game and straight to the point stories while JRPG's tend to twist the stories to be more complicated, (well i think most asian stories are like that). If JRPG's are that bad why would they rule the market? what differs is JRPG's surprise gamers and not always predictable. It's only like comparing WESTERN COMICS from MANGA's. Well if you really hate JRPG's it would be best not to waste your time with it, even with a peek, or even commenting. If you want you can rally infront of your gov't building to ban JRPG's from your country. Well really this is just a waste of time. and.... You just can't make them change to what you want, they evolve from time to time.

I can't see how ANYONE can hate J-RPGs that's like saying people hate FF or the Tales' series (example, Tales of Symphonia.)

JRPGS are for the win I love them. Yeah there are some stuff they can work on like change as you said. Thats one of my foremost objective when playing rpgs...Seeing my character change in look as the story goes. Those that hates on J-Rpgs have not truly played a J-Rpg or were born in 2000. Because if you were born in the 90s you know all those J-Rpgs that were released unless your parents didn't buy you a game system.. Final Fantasy 7, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Breath of fire, Fire Emblem, Secret of Mana. etc. All these had original storylines, different gameplay, characters, etc etc. Western-Rpgs....Never even knew they existed. I'm pretty sure most Rpgs being made in NA are rip-offs from J-Rpgs or being written by a J-Rpg writer.  /end.

jrpg > westrpg, I love jrpg's alot more then western ones, probably cuz jrpg's always tend to use cool fighting systems and i almost always love the art style of jrpg's. Not that i hate western rpg's.. they just.. idk its not that there not fun.. they just always seem to bore me.. even Fallout 3.. after playing it for like 3 hours.. i got bored as heck and didnt play it again till about a week later..

i think western rpg's are better cause they are have more substance and seem more logical. Rather than mess up anime logic witch is like "dude lets go kick this guys as for something he should be mad about". The only reasons why western rpg's fail is that a good one is hard to pull off. But western compaines like bio-ware can produce better rpgs like Dragon age and mass effect. They even made a sonic game good

I don't see how anyone could hate Japanese RPGs. I mean, the only North American RPG I can think of is KOTOR, and that's simply because all the other ones just weren't worth remembering.
