Game Over: Boy Commits Suicide After Parents Ban Gaming

Category: Random Game: Default Posted on May 25, 2009 2:13 am

A 12-year-old schoolboy leapt from a sixth floor veranda after his parents decreed that he could no longer play computer games.

The boy, who lived near Bangkok, Thailand, was apparently an avid gamer, and was distraught that his parents had banned him from gaming. Police searching his mobile found that he had sent numerous mails to friends complaining of the ban, and saying “tomorrow is my last day.”

According to classmates the boy arrived at school Thailand normally, but after placing his bag at his desk headed straight out onto a sixth floor veranda, with a grim expression on his face, and there immediately jumped to his doom.

Just which game or games prompted this unfortunate case is not mentioned.

Thailand’s Ministry of Health criticised the parents for their handling of the case saying “For children addicted to gaming, the most effective approach is not to ban games but to regulate the time spent gaming.”

Surprised? No, we have been so fed up with things like this but the answers or solutions would never be figured out

Like, wow he is an addict. also, this dude hung himself because that he didn't get this like game system. what's up with kids these days? seriously. i'm not that addicted, happily.

oh yea u cant blame weak mindedness on games because thats just an excuse that fact is that the person themselves is weak minded

why would u try to escape reality when u cant lol sometimes all u have to do is sit down and think about it from both sides like: why are thye doing this? or why am i so addicted? theres many reasons and questions but no answers this is one of those difficult things that sometimes only tat person in that situation has to overcome but dont go around killing urself over something like that because u only have 1 life and make everyday count as if it were ur last

Games make teenagers weak-minded, they don't have a strong mind to control themselves to think about all of this, Kill himself just because of the ban of games? that's stupid

I will just say this on those who blames the kid. my parents were extremely strict and over protectived. I would get beats for bring friends over, and was not allow to go now. lock up all the time in my home with no privacy as well. for the longest time, i was in depression. It was video games that saved me when i was at my limits.

the major different between what happen here and the kid was that, no matter how depress i get, there are still things i want to alcomplish in my life and about the people who i will leave behind over something so trival. yes, i was too an addict and i would skip school all the time just to play counter-strike.

being declare as an accident by my parents, my family giving up on me in passing highschool because i was never able to pass one course, english. after many efforts and annoyance in trying to pass english, i've finally graduate. now i'm in college, pursuing my carreer in programming. although i would love to get into game programming, i know that would never happen, but nonetheless, i still enjoy programming.

You can never blame the games for it, the ones who are to blame are the ones who commit these suicides. Really now, why blame video games? They cannot do anything about themselves because they were made to entertain people, and they are not living, or have a mind on its own, they just do what they are programmed to do. On the other hand though, we humans, who have the free will can do anything. It's just that some people don't even have fortitude and temperance to begin with. Hey you dont blame a guy who just commited suicide, because you pity the family for the loss, instead you blame the video game. I'm not saying you blame anyone to teach anyone a lesson, but someone (preferrably a charismatic genius) needs to lecture people about these "video games made them do it" issues to make these kind of news stop. Because my eyes, and probably yours, are bleeding from reading them.

For those who like to TL;DR here is my message, he did it because he was deprived of games, not because he was influenced by games.

Yeap its no surprising at all. There's a lot of articles about addiction to games. Like the Korean dude who is addicted to strarcraft http://play.tm/news/6353/korean-starcraft-gamer-dies/ and other more.

“For children addicted to gaming, the most effective approach is not to ban games but to regulate the time spent gaming.” - I agree with this quote. My late mom saw me playing games most of my time but she never asked me to stopped but would only ask if i've eaten or would ask me to rest for awhile. Im lucky though.

That's sad. :(

If I would have an addicted kid, I would also start by regulate the time spended by gaming, also looking for alternative activities or interests. Actually I would start with regulated times to beginn with, then the kid gets used to it from start on.

Games don't make people make dicisions like this. The people make them for themselves. I don't think he killed  himself over videogames, I simply think that it was the alst straw. we wont ever really know for sure.

i guess there's more than games... maybe the parents or classmates used to spank him and his only relive were games... maybe something even darker, making games a necessary escapism

it needs more investigation before saying "videogames makes suicidal kids"

How sad =/. If his addiction was this bad, their parents should have been more cautious with the issue. And his 'friends' did nothing at all as far as I can see -___-
