Game, Sex & Drugs: That's Why College Kids Fail at Life

Category: Crimes Game: Default Posted on Oct 27, 2009 11:27 pm

A post on the ChristWire website argues that videogames, along with "nonstop dorm masturbation" and drugs, are among the reasons why our college kids are failing at life.

Author Stephenson Billings previously explored the topic "Is Video Gaming a Threat to America’s High School Jock Culture?," but believes that the problem is even more widespread in college. Why? "Dorm rooms are like bacteria dishes where crueler and more virulent microorganisms are constantly introduced to breed in a frothy frenzy of poor judgment."

He continued, "When video gaming is added to a culture of persistent sexual experimentation in a peer group of sex radicals fueled by vast amounts of mind-altering narcotics, reality is the big loser." Even more:

Sharp colors and quick movement like you find in Grand Theft Auto make these couch potatoes feel as if they’re really moving through life at a brisk pace while in reality growing obese. It makes them feel important, as if they’re achieving something, while their textbooks sit unopened on nearby desks. It sucks up hours upon hours when these children could be learning business or engineering. Instead of American history, they memorize the satanic rites of Resident Evil, thrill in emotional suffering with Silent Hill or train to be Columbine-style murderers with Dead Space Extraction.

Billings, who bills himself as “an Investigative Journalist, Motivational Children's Party Entertainer and Antique Soda Bottle Collector all in one special, blessed package!,” also tells parents that if their child really loves them, they will submit to regular drug testing.

He concludes his article with a special note to his "young readers":

The foundation of modern morality so necessary for the next generation to lead is not something you children will get sucking on the end of a filthy bong while yanking a joystick around the streets of San Andreas, gunning down minorities and looking for "Hot Coffee" as some mysterious classmate from Art History oils your tensed-up pecs. This might seem fun now, but it’s truly destroying your soul.

actually they even proved that drugs is not even an issue of failing actually its even Help them to focus on their study in class

video game make you relax for your hard day and calm your brain from what you did in your class so you can have a clear mind after that which is good for studying

as for masturbation and sex its also help the brain to regulate the blood in all the body and help focus on your study

those 3 were proved scientifically

i don't think these 3 are the reason. however, they can be linked to something else. all 3 are things that are usually limited by parents. in college, this is often the first time people are actually away from home and the control of their parents. this gives them greater freedom to do what they want, when they want. for those kids looking away to get from helicopter parents, this is usually their chance to do what they want. if their parents severely restricted their leisure time, they might take up heavy gaming. if their parents restricted them from having a relationship, they will find a way to make one happen. as for drugs, it has to do with age. the legal smoking age in the US is 18. coincidentally, this is the age that most people enter college. which is also the legal age for sex in the US. among others include voting, driving without supervision and other things. if you want kids to stop this crap at college. first, make the legal age for sex and marraige around puberty. not 5-10 years after. the longer you force them to hold it, the worse it will get. second, colleges need to be more engaged if they want higher participations. perhaps they're not reading because most professors just recite the same crap in their lecture as the reading instead of actually making people engage in a proper discussion or attempt to get others interested. you want more reading? how about less GE and more focus on the major? how about less math, more music?

I'm not sure why half the people here are freaking out about this. O_o

Maybe if they made a few friends they would know that this is partially true.

Christ wire is a stire sight. In a way the joke articles they do are a double edged sword because not only do they make fun of a lunatic fringe religious mentality, but they convince idiots like you that all religious types are on some crusade against them. So it is really an equal oppertunity parody.

You'd think "internet journalism" would bother to check on sources, but you didn't and you got burned.

Oh, and I just noticed that this article was posted on "ChristWire"... yep, not surprised anymore. A Bible-beating group of like-minded thinkers? Check. Lack of any real thinking, instead settling for simply agreeing with each other on everything? Check. Completely UN-Christian mentality of everybody is going to 'hell' because they are not them (a.k.a. judging themselves, instead of letting God do it)? Check. Thinking that it is their sole duty to try to 'save' the 'unsaveable' from the 'devil' without even having a basic understanding of the Bible outside of the literal meaning of each word (memorzied for easy preaching in inappropriate situations)? BIG... FAT... CHECK.

I would serioulsy recommend ignoring anything coming from any community that tries to stand out by using their "belief" structure as a group title. The Bible preaches a close and personal communion with God... not a public one.

A relatively uninteresting guy in his mid 50s made a comment about me not getting married any time soon (I'm 25) because how could I, since I was still watching "cartoons?" First of all, I graduated college recently and have had a TON of job searches and interviews, but still jobless... getting married? Why the fk would I want to be married with no money? Second of all, I'm not seeing anybody right now thanks to making habitually wrong choices in who I date, so why would I want to marry ANYBODY right now? Third, the guy has been in a love-less marriage for 40+ years, but does not leave her because A.) the guy is not exactly "pretty" to look at, and B.) they have 3 kids together, not all of which are done with college yet. Oh, and I was watching South Park, which not only makes interesting parallels to what is going on in current world news, but is also technically rated MA for 17+ viewership.

... and that is the whole problem with our society. A large chunk of the older generation is mentally undeveloped, have old pre-conceived notions with no logic behind them (video games = bad, marriage = good) simply because they were brain-washed by their parents as children, and most of them are holding on to their undeserved jobs for 20+ years while more qualified candidates are sitting at home jobless or paying for their government provided retirement benefits working shitty low-end jobs (which will not be around by the time WE are that age)... why the fk does 20 years of sub-par work experience trump 8 years of diversified work experience, a MODERN (a.k.a. technologically evolved) education, and a strong work ethic? So o

I thought this was a parent-gamer war, since when did it transform into a MMO-console war?

Well, what can I say? What needs to say has already been said, but Stephenson Billings was asking for a massive flaming war from the gaming community when he was dim enough to post these "findings".

Usual parental paranoia, nothing special, but equally irksome.

That's their fault. If they can't get rid of the bong and can't keep control of their **** long enough to learn for four years, then screw it. Royally f**k it all.

Oh and Stephenson Billings, you have obviously never played a goddamn video game, otherwise you would understand that not all video game players are fucking druggies and chronic masturbators.

Hahaha I think I qualify as one of these people, except, I go to University, I live at home, I don't do drugs, sex(none of ur business). I'd rather skip classes and play games. Can't even get myself to get up at 7am to get to school by 8:30am. *sigh* I tell myself to to study, yet I find myself playing games instead. It's not that I fail, I am just bored as hell.

Yes Fail, videogames are not made for everyone, and there are people that are psicologically and mentally weak and can't deal with both videogames and real life...

That Not Quite True some people can control what they are doing some people have some emotional problem thats why people do this kind of things they feel that they are not love by their parents this all depends on the parents

Guest
Post Time : Oct 28,2009 3:56 am

it all depends on the person...besides the fact that they got to college...I seriously doubt that means they failed life...

Guest
Post Time : Oct 28,2009 3:49 am

physiologically!

just depends on the person..

Boring.  Every generation thinks the next one is doomed.  You can read the same sentiments in Roman plays from before Christ was born.  Every generation then grows up and feels the same about the next.  My advice to the OP is to quit worrying about what other people are doing with their lives and pay attention to living his own.

Hey that's not true.. D:< whoever you are (pointing to the person who made the original article) my sister is a gamer too but she achieved scholar and high ranks at the same time in her college school today and now still maintaining herstatus up to now in her 3rd year college.. My parents are really happy for her achievement..

I think it depends on the environment, friends and how you race your child..
