Video Game Addiction: 5 Extreme Cases

Category: Crimes Game: Default Posted on Nov 06, 2009 1:31 am

(This article is originally from Asylum)Even guys who don't suffer from video game addiction are sometimes unable to resist the thrill of killing a few more shambling zombies, saving the princess or winning World War II.

But for those gamers out there who simply cannot put the controller down, video game addiction is a much more serious affliction, as was reinforced by Michael Fahey of Kotaku recently coming forward with the story of an "EverQuest" addiction that cost him his car, job and girlfriend.

The outpouring of similar stories in the comments section of this post reminded us that while the affliction isn't officially recognized by psychiatrists yet, to those who have suffered from it, it is very real. Keep reading to explore some of the more extreme cases of video game addiction.

Failed Intervention?

This clip from the TV show "Intervention" focuses on a young man who plays both "Halo" and "Dance Dance Revolution" with equal intensity. Swearing when you're tea-bagged by a high-pitched 12-year-old from the U.K. we can understand, but it doesn't take a psychiatrist to know something is wrong when a guy screams and flips off a cartoon avatar in a dancing game. Luckily, he does seek help and quickly leaves for a 42-day-long wilderness retreat. Unfortunately, he begins playing games again after getting back, which begs the question: Should gaming addiction be treated the same as other addictions? Members of Alcoholics Anonymous proudly state how long they've been sober. Should game addicts be held to the same standard?

Gaming and Mental Health

This story from two years ago tackles two cases dealing with the addictive nature of both "EverQuest" and "World of Warcraft," the latter of which boasts an active online audience in the millions. It seems like games that feature never-ending gameplay (thanks to online functionality) tend to elicit addictive behaviors more easily from users. One gamer discussed in the video committed suicide after his "EverQuest" addiction led him not only to withdraw from family and quit his job, but to refuse medication prescribed for ADD and epilepsy. While going off his medication probably had more to do with his suicide than his gaming addiction did, it's hard to completely discount it as a contributing factor.

New Kind of Junkie?

The "gaming leads to violence" movement has been around for years. However, does gaming addiction lead to violence? Possibly, or at least as much as other addictions. A brutal murder in Vietnam lends credence to the argument that game addicts will do anything to feed their habit -- much like drug, alcohol or gambling addicts. The story explains how a 13-year-old boy murdered an 81-year-old for money to fund his online gaming addiction. In another case, a 15-year-old boy who relied on extortion to earn cash to continue playing online games was arrested. And you thought gold farmers were bad.

Blurring Line Between Reality and Fantasy

China enacted strict regulations regarding to online gaming back in 2005 after a gamer killed another player in real life for stealing his in-game sword. A general concern about video games is that gamers get so immersed in online gaming that they disregard common sense and reality -- a concern sadly proven true in this case.

interventions don't help. their purpose is to make someone realize they have a problem. that is all. little is done to actually fix it. if anything it worsens the situations by placing the blame of other problems they may not be related to onto the person even if it is fine for them. social withdrawal only occurs when society sets too high of expectations for people. this is most commonly done by PARENTS. forcing ideas over people will only make it worse and may have more detrimental effects than video games ever will. people will always kill for money. PERIOD. society places value on money because it can be used for other things. there just simply isn't enough to go around so stealing becomes an option. in a society where these habits are discouraged, it only further increases the desire to use illegal methods to obtain them since they are already considered to be low by society's standards. there really isn't a blur. the fact is that in their "fantasy" world, the things they do have value. that "in-game" sword has value. if you attempt to steal from someone, they will come after you one way or another. it works the same way in real life. if you steal from a bank, they will send the police after you. people will always break down. it is up to society to decide how they break down. keep in mind the situation. this is more likely to happen if parents abuse their children or have strict restrictions placed on them. if people feel they are threatened, they will respond. the father was the one who basically let him have the gun.

Ok what I have to think on this is this much, a few people go ape crap nuts and kill people and the media and people try to make it look like its every gamer in the world, honestly people are responsable for things and what they do. Not to mention most cases too people do not approche the whole game additcs ( the people who are accualy in need of help. ) They try to forcefuly tell people to stop playing game period or use methods of outcasting them, truth is alot of the suicides if looked up properly will probly show alot of people putting on presure on people with a urge to play games 24/7 and of course " Oh the game made little jimmy kill himself " statement comes out instead it should be a whole " I made him/her feel like a worthless pice of s**t, and told them they will amount to nothing so they felt it was better to just rid the world of them as a problem " . Point is telling a person to never play games again or whatnot is way to dam extreme, not to mention putting anyone in a posistion of worthlessness felling and abuseive behavior on them as of talking about how worthless they are and how noone likes them and the such should be just as big of a crime as selling drugs, or maybe even killing someone becasue these people tend to drive people on this addiction over the edge to commit suicide. ( Yea I bet noone wantts to hear this either who is all on the whole games are bad sernario either but truth is while its not good for a person to just do nothing but play games, its also unexcussable of the harrassment and presure people get put in either, maybe think about regulateing thier gameing and trying to give them some coffadence instead of makign them feel like they are a pice of s**t might work alot better. )  Thsi is what I think on this.

That's why our parents were telling us to be always busy with jobs and educations.  Strict parents may look scary but you are living with the good side.

If you think gaming is a drug, you have no idea what you are talking about. It's the person's willpower that determines what you will become. These people who have bee taken over by video games are weak and it is only nature's intention to kill them off. Natural selection would be what I'm talking about.

There too many people talking about video game addiction... I just think that the generations dunno how to handle their childen playing them, it does ruin relationships, however I feel that's it a area where people dunno what a 'video game' is and how to deal with it. We come a long way from the television, atari console and 3d graphics to understand who is to blame when it comes down to video game addiciton.

Also the government doesn't seem to mind either if everyone owns a console.

Game and Mental Health Video

'It is the gamers responability to monitor he or her playing habit and take breaks' - Bullsh!t, I just think some people around them are boring. Boredom can lead to poor mental health from what I've heard... maybe some need to be aware about this.

Everquest player who killed himself after killing his job and cutting off the phone line is totally insane and mother blames the video game... yeh right, give me a break.

There no end to MMOs games, because it's an MMO, there will be an end to an MMO thou, maybe every 12 years when the server shut themselves off because the company loses business. I dunno why the news report b!tched about like it was a bad thing... you could say the same thing about Grand Theft Auto or Maplestory.

I think it depends on the person. I play MMOs yet I haven't quit my job.

"humanity failures", in some ways, we all, as humans, fail, because we're all imperfect, of else this humanoid species would be an anarchy by now.

They just failed harder, that's all.

Gaming addiction is triggered by SO MANY factors other than personal problems, but it's totally a battle between the latter and the person himself... you still have complete control over yourself, If you tend to say you've lose control... it's not it. You've only let it happen the first place.

Flipping out and killing your mom because she took away your goddamn Halo 3 is NOT a good reason to grab your favorite knife and go stabbing. I admit sometimes I feel that way too(my parents enjoy verbally butchering me) but still its wrong.

Remember-this is fantasy, not reality.

the article is remarkably lacking in real analysis and juxtaposes events assuming a direct link. for the 1st case study it was somewhat believable but for the other 4 the cited works and the author fails to analyze other factors and in the case of the man with ADD and epilepsy, the author blatantly disregards the medication to make his pathetically weak point.
