To Bot Or Not To Bot: That’s The Question

Category: Game Comments Game: Magic World Online Posted on Jul 29, 2008 9:11 am

A Glance At Magic World Online “New” Feature

One of the main feature that has been highlighted and claimed to be differentiated among other MMORPGs by Magic World Online: BOT feature.  When I first heard about that, I’m asking myself, “Do they realize what they have done to ruin their own games?”.

A couple years ago, I was among people who quit games because the invasion of bots in MMORPG.  Here’s some reasons why I don’t like bot:

1. No one to talk with.  The beauty of playing MMORPG is because I can met many people and enjoy the game together.  But how can I do that if I just say hello and that character just teleport right away?  Later, it become worst because there are no strict rule to overcome this problem.  I say hello and the bot character would reply, “Get lost noobs, I am bot!”

2. No honor in reaching high level.  One of my purposes in playing MMORPG is to reach high level.  There is honor and I can be proud even though I am not reaching the level as quick as many other players, because my job won’t allow me to play as much as them.  But can you imagine when I have reach the highest level of the game and proudly announced it to my friends, they just reply, “Oh that’s great, how many days have you bot your character?”  When I said that I play it for months, they just can’t believe it, because it is very common to bot your character in that game.  I imagined it would be a very different case if I said that I have reached such level in WoW.

3. No balance in the game anymore.  Imagine how shocked I am when I want to buy a really rare items, and the price already gone high up to 5 more times compare to a week before!  That’s because the bot has made everybody rich, and can afford to buy the items easily.  And as the demand goes high with that new rich people, the price of the items can go high.  On the contrary, the not so rare items that usually have a good price, are now dropping like they are not worth more than sh*t.  No balance of economy at all.  Not to mention that a “normally played” won’t be able to compete with all that “botted player” to conquer castles.

So this bot feature of MWO really make me wondering, will they succeed.  However, it seems like time has change.  And it is a very different case when a game that prohibit player to use bot fail to prevent bot, with a game that ALREADY provide players with bot system.

When I download this game, I’ve already expected that I won’t have a good conversation and help from other players.  And I know I won’t be proud when reaching high level in this game.  But these “expected” conditions actually make me not getting bothered by this bot feature.  And to my surprise, I can still find friends in there.  I said to myself, “Hey, this is not so bad.”  I said that not because I never try to use bot.  I have try some bot program just to let me know how it feels, but I eventually quit using them because of second reason that I have mentioned before.  Even if I have to compare this MWO feature with previous bot, the MWO’s bot is quite primitive in terms of capability.  When I tried modkore, I can set up so many things and the program really gone well, while in MWO, I can not specify which monster to attack and not to.  So when I said that this is not so bad, I am not talking about the feeling of using bot, but I am talking about the game conditions.

Well, I can’t say that this feature is a good strategy, because it won’t catch all normal players who want to get honor by spending so many hours of playing.  But for some people, maybe they will be hooked by this feature, especially if they are busy people who still want to have a high level character without playing it.  And to overcome my first reason of quitting fully botted game, I think developers who want to put bot in their game need to innovate some more features.  That features must force players at certain times, to play without bot.  So they can interact each other and found the real meaning of MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER online role playing game.

I think if you're going to bot a game and not even be there, Then what is the point of you actually buying / downloading the game. There really isn't one is it and plus it's really unfair to the players who are actually there grinding and being out done by a KSin bot. Me most of the time i just kill them then report it to a GM while it lays there but i guess there is no real solution to it since most of the games out use fail guard. lol

Honestly I'm against botting, but I know if i had a bot and I know I wouldn't get caught I'd bot. I know I'm a hypocrite, but I', trying to be honest. Botting saves time and all but in the end you're not going to know how to play your class if you hit the level cap and try to do end game things. The best system thats like botting but it's not is probably Atlantica Online's "Auto-Move" system. It is honestly the greatest thing I think that could be put in a mmo to prevent boredum. It helps you get to where you need to be when you don't know where to go, I hate doing a quest and spending like 10 mins figuring out where to go or going to the wrong place. Plus I hate walking for like 20 mins to a new town in games its so anoying Auto-move takes you there while you can check msgs and do something else its more relaxing.

It's OK, nice to have an honest comment. Well, I would really like that auto move feature from Atlantica Online, I will looking forward for that game. That's why I said that developer need to be creative instead just putting an in-game bot to prevent boredom in grinding. I also hate wasting time to go here and there for nothing.

Well... the grind in MWO is very high alike some other mmorpgs, so they integrated an in game bot thinking it could solve the problem, but then it caused some lack of "fun" in playing the game. Though for me, I play this game as a secondary game, where I bot all day, and when the time comes, I go into war!

Yes it is. It's better for developer to create new way to overcome grinding, rather than providing bot to overcome it. Yeah, that's a good way to play this game XD.

Whats the point of havin a game if your not playin it sound stupid for me. But ohh... well...  let ppl take their decisions even now this is ruining the fun of playin a mmo.

Hehehe, that's a good question. Some people really want to feel the fun with their friends and with enough level without playing I guess, maybe that's the answer, I dunno.

I have no problem with in game bots. For some people it helps make the game ore fun. Like games where the grind is mind numbing a bot could be helpful. Also what about people who love to game but don't have the time they really to do it. Bots can help these people reach a level they might not be able to get to no their own because even busy want to have fun. Besides there are enough games without bot to play.

Yeah, this game has changed my perspective a little bit too.

Here's the thing.
Games are supposed to for playing.  For fun.
If a game isn't fun enough to play, if it's a game where you have a robot play it for you, then please someone tell me what the point of it is?
Games are for playing, not letting robots play for you.
Any game that sucks enough that you have to have bots play, isn't worth the memory it takes to store it.

You got the point bro. But sometimes people really want to play with levels as high as their friends without playing it. No wonder bot program exists.

Bots can never perish. If deny, they will use illegally, if allow, they use it without hesitate, in either way, they still use bots =D Those who use bot never care anything, not even their honor or satisfaction, they just want to win, thats all ^^

Layce! Long time no hear from u! Yeah, sometimes botters are just ignorant people who don't care about others.

I totally agree with you. Botting should not be allowed in MMO because MMO are designed for people not some stupid program that makes you the highest character in the game. But, the company that provides the bots works for the company that created the game. So the companys are actually destroying their own work while still getting their money.

Note to Botters: You all are lazy bastards who sucks at playing video games. :D

LOL. One of my friend is having a theory: real life is already hard, so let the bot take the hard part of cyber life. But for me, that's sucks, no wonder life is hard on them cuz they always want what easy for them XD.
