My Top 5 Most Wanted Games To Film Adaptation

Category: Game Industry Game: Default Posted on Jul 16, 2009 1:00 pm

After my last blog article, one of my friend ask me, “So is there any particular game title that you would like to watch as a movie?”  Oh yes there is!  In fact, there are.

All of these title, being listed here because I felt that the base story is very strong.  That’s the only consideration why I brought them here.  This is going to be a very long blog.

And here’s my list:

5. Disciple World

The world of Disciple series, Sacred Land or refer as Nevandaar, was created by Bethrezen, a once favourite angel of Highfather (another name for “the God” in the game).  Bethrezen invited all of other angels to create all the living being for the world.  However, since other angels are being jealous for Bethrezen’s position in the eyes of Highfather, they intentionally put their creation to an endless war.  So the created living being of Sacred Land, never knew the agenda of their gods, start to fight each other, human, elves, dwarf.  The Highfather, saw the world created by his favourite angel was just a world of chaos and bloodshed, punish Bethrezen to be imprisoned in the core of Sacred Land forever.  Bethrezen burn in vengeance and anger, ten thousand years after being imprisoned in the molten core of Nevandaar, created a demon army called Legion of The Damned.

4. Fatal Frame Series

John Rogers of Dreamworks SKG was planning to bring this game to movie.  But eversince Courtney Webb dropping his interest in the title, seems like the project is being put on hold.  However, as this game based on real Japanese folklore, and even some of the place was rumored to hold true stories, I really-really want to see how this game being brought to movie.  This game, beside Ku-On, is the first game that give me a goosebump when playing.  I have played Resident Evil series, Alone In The Dark, or Silent Hill, but none of them ever give me this creepy feeling that I felt when I play Fatal Frame.  The story of the third series, where Rei Kurosawa catch her deceased fiance in her photograph can be a very potential story for a movie.

3. Diablo World

Ah, I believe many people already knew the story of this franchise title.  There’s an endless war between the High Heavens and Burning Hell, but some angels and demons are growing tired of this war, and decide to withdraw from it.  Diablo’s world, Sanctuary, started when the leader of rebellious angels (the angels that leave the battle), Inarius decided to live together with band of demons led by Lilith (also tired and leave the battle).  Inarius even start to fall in love with Lilith.  Inarius created Sanctuary during that time.  Over time, this union of angels and demons, give birth to a race called Nephalem (the player’s race), a being with potential astounding power.  Although Inarius try to hide this world from High Heavens  by creating Worldstone, but he can’t protect this world from the Burning Hell.  The Prime Evil, 3 Lords of Burning Hell, decided to use this world for their advantages.  But, again for short, they’re captured by Horadrim created by Archangel Tyrael.  And so on as you know from the gameplay story about Diablo.

2. Warcraft World

This is the only MMORPG world that I can considered to be brought to the silverscreen.  I feel that other MMORPGs, nowaday, don’t have strong storyline.  So most of them don’t have bond and cult like Blizzard series.  When I saw Peter Jackson portraying the battle in Two Tower, where some treefolk start attacking the tower, it only reminds me of Warcraft III.  From there on, I really dream and hope that somebody would bring Warcraft world to the movie.  So aside from my dream of having the main story in the movie, I am still glad that Legendary Picture is working on the movie.  But since I still don’t know the main plot of what Chris Metzen, the appointed writer of the movie, would create, I wouldn’t put this as my number one most wanted title.  I heard that they will make it revolve around their comic’s character.  For me quite dissapointing.  IF they stick to the one of the main story of the game, I would put it to my number one.  However, as Thomas Tull said in Blizzcon 2007 that the movie would be a war movie, not a quest movie, it’s still worth to be waited!

1. The Alara World

Now, when my friend ask about “is there any GAME”, that doesn’t mean we have to choose only electronic games title right?  Now my most wanted title to be brought to the silver screen, is not coming from electronic games, it’s from a card game Magic: The Gathering (MTG) series.

The latest block, Alara block, has a very potential story for a movie.  Alara, once a world with vast mana of all color (plain-white, swamp-black, mountain-red, forest-green, island-blue), due to a catastrophic events, divided into 5 worlds.  Each world, now, only know 3 colors of mana.  Bant, a world with angelic and knight hierarchy, knows only white-blue-green mana.  Naya, a world of vast jungle and beast, knows only red-white-green mana.  Esper, a world with order and artifact creature, knows only black-white-blue mana.  Jund, a volcanic world with dragons and goblins, knows only red-black-green mana.  Grixis, a world of undead and necromancy, knows only black-red-blue mana.

In each world, reside one powerful planeswalker.  A planeswalker in the world of MTG, is a being who has talent to ignite a spark in him or her, and enable them to walk across other planes.  I know it’s not easy to describe it into words without playing the games or reading the novel.  Let just say that, they are very powerful.  Now in Alara, an elder dragon, also a planeswalker, called Nicol Bolas, is trying to recreate Alara as one world of vast mana, so that he can extract it to regain his immortality and previous enormous power.  All other planeswalker will stop him with all cost.

It’s so sad that among my top 5 list, only one world of MMORPG among them.  But what can I say, nowaday MMORPGs don’t have strong storyline.

So what game titles do you guys ever dream of becoming a movie???

I strongly believe Magic The Gathering has the potential to become a really successful mmorpg.,The card game puts major emphasis on the different attributes of creatures, which will break simplicity of combat. So Korean devs wont dare touch the idea of a Magic game cuz they only know how to make grindfests.
