Cosplay, Physical Appearance DOES Matter

Category: Game Community Perspective Game: Default Posted on Apr 23, 2009 4:54 pm

One day, in a forum, I read this thread title:

“Which one is more important in cosplay, passion or physical appearance.”

It’s gonna be a neverending debate.  Both are important.  But if you compare passionate cosplayer without “supporting” physical appearance, WITH a good physically looking cosplayer without passion, I believe the last one will get more digg or being downloaded when you upload them on the internet.

A member of the forum, is thinking that physical appearance is more important and he or she post this pic:

I don’t totally agree with him or her, because people with passion has the right to express their selves.

However, lately, I’ve seen some game events or exhibition are using some cosplayer to promote their games, but I have to say that they don’t have “supporting” physical appearance.  Some of my friends even give comments like, “How could they choose them as cosplayers?”.  Apparently, physical appearance DOES matter.  And if you combine it with passion and good photography technique, I am sure it will be attractive.

Appearance make perfect

Now if game publisher really want to expose their game, they’ve got to start thinking that cosplay is a serious matter these days.

So I made some conclusions about cosplay.  When you choose a character to be cosplayed, choose a character that most similar with your physical appearance.  Put your passion on how you pose and taking picture out of it.  And I am really talking about how you pay attention to details when you are taking pictures.  Environment, camera angle, lighting.  It will make a difference.

In my country there’s some cosplay lovers that really put their passion in what they do.  Take a look at some of their work, you will understand what I mean.

Ragnarok Online cosplay by Endless Illution group (Endiru)

One thing that I note, they have “sufficient” appearance to be a semi-pro cosplayer.  And more, they also add passion, take a look at how they choose the contrast between their costume and the environment, how they're taking their picture, and their attention to details of the costume!

And talking about details…

A more casual cosplay by Endiru, one of them is from Gallerian Ash

Another example of passionate cosplayer with good physical appearance come from Kipi.  There are so many photos of her in the internet and I believe you many of you guys already have it.  I will just post my favourites.

Kipi cosplaying Misa Misa from Death Note and Anna from He Is My Master

So please, all of you game publishers, pay a very good attention to your (employed) cosplayers when you held an exhibition.  It will affect your selling, and please note, appearance DOES matter.

PS: picture are taken from various resources and property of their respective owners, photos of Endless Illution a.k.a Endiru is used with permission from Pinky Luxun, thanks a lot to her for letting me using their photos.  Congratulation on your winning trip for cosplaying in Singapore.

not really into this but in my open opinion, its more passion having a pretty person cosplaying a pretty character after all the characters were design to look good.

^^ well, when the character were design to look good, it is very natural that we expect the same good looking when we "met" them in the real life, rite?

When i see the cosplay pictures the person "cuteness" can play a factor in whether they look good but i have seen some where even if they are cute they just don't fit the character. I'll look at it and think well man they could of been a good, i don't know...Revy from black lagoon instead.

My question is why would someone dress up looking like a character they know they couldn't cosplay as. I know the person likes the character, i like Kuchiki Byakuya but i know for a fact that i wouldn't cosplay that guy for the sheer fact that 1: im not light skinned, and 2: i wouldn't dare try to replicate that crazy hair. People should probably think about who they want to cosplay as and wiegh out some pros and cons to see whether or not its worth it to try and dess up like them. Even if its just for fun its cool to express yourself but have alittle self respect. At the very least cosplay something that compliments you.

Correct! Cute doesn't mean you will fit the character! That's also a point that I want to express.

I don't see how Cosplay is in any way practical. But still it is interesting to see people do these kind of things.

Thank you.

I'd like to believe that true cosplayers with good understanding of style not only know how to pay attention to detail in the costume, but appropriate body figure as well. People don't pay attention to your costume if you weigh a good 400 pounds more than the actual figure (no offense, just the truth), though I respect their effort.

That's what I'm trying to say here. Agree ^^.

Well, I agree with you in some points but, I guess it depends on the situation you know.
People do cosplay not just to promote stuff or to show off themselves, sometimes they do that just for fun.
Of course they will get more admirers if they are beautiful like the ones on most pictures you chose. But remember that will happen even if they are not cosplayers you know. People tend to look too much for appearance. So, if you are cute doing cute cos it will get digged a lot, not only because it really looks like the character, but because many people who will admire it, are simply looking the PERSON not the clothing and all.
On the other hand, if you are ugly/fat/etc, and your character is not like that, many will laugh at you, no matter how hard you tried to make a perfect costume, make up, acting, accessories, etc. That also is due to the fact that  most are simply looking for the person not the cosplay itself.
I think the ideal IMO is to equilibrate, you have to choose a character you like, and try your best to look like them.

(I wrote too much lol xD.... )

Yeah true, that's what I'm trying to say. People with passion has the right to express their feelings too even in cosplay.
Here, I just want to say to game publisher, they need to pay attention to their marketing effort when it comes to cosplay ^^.
And yes, the idea of ideal cosplay is to equilibrate, exacly like I said about my conclusion
