Some Missing Links, Game To Movie

Category: Game Industry Game: Default Posted on Jul 03, 2009 9:32 pm

In my last blog article, I said that when I watch Uncharted 2: Among The Thieves, it was like watching a movie instead of game trailers.  Seems like the hollywood guys also like this game title, and from the rumors that I read, they will start to shoot a movie based on this game.  You can read the complete news here. (Alas, it’s not the Among The Thieves movie).

And then, I try to remember, how many game that has been successful (critically and commercially) when they’re being adapted to movie.  Hmm, compare to comic and novel to movie, game has lost for several rounds.  Why?

Everybody can have their opinion about why.  But here’s mine:

Director

Never hire Uwe Boll for game to film adaptation!  What a great great decission for Blizzard to turn down Uwe Boll’s wish to bring their franchise to movie.  And the same praise should be awarded to Hideo Kojima to refuse his MGS title to be directed by mr. Boll.  Yet, mr. Boll was saying that Michael Bay is f**king retarded?  I’m sorry sir, but if you compare your Alone In The Dark series or Blood Rayne series revenue, to Transformers series and Armageddon, what you said just show who’s f**king retarded in this case.

If somebody like Peter Jackson or JJ Abrams show their interest to adapt a game to a movie, I believe the result will show a huge difference compare to Uwe Boll’s movies.

Adaptation

Many movies claim they do movies adaptation but they don’t really adapt!  Please remember, that WE, gamers, are going to watch your movie.  So please adapt!  When we are fascinated by the way a spell is being cast, put effort to bring that to life!    Try to search actor or actress that resemble the character as close as possible.  And when we play game, at some points, we were already “watching a movie”, so if you want to make a REAL movie, be sure to surpass all experience that we already feel in the game!

Story

Upon watching several movies that supposed to describe a game, I was confused that the story was never even related to the game!  And what make it worse is that this new story, is crappy, full of bullsh*t, and a kind of script that will invite gamers to say “even my grandma or elementary school children can do better than that” type.  If scripwriter of the movie think that following the trend of reboot-ing stories from whatever media adaptation movie is a good strategy, please bear in mind, that this strategy was successful because it wasn’t the first time adaptation!  Even if it’s the first time adaptation, they build them neatly!  So if you want to build your own story, give a reason to us to finally agree that yours is better, or for at least do something like the latest Star Trek movie, “an alternate reality because of the time travel” strategy.  Good move by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Thats why I never trust a movie that made out of game. Not just game, also from anime...just see the dragonball evolution...they can suck my dragonball under my pant...my suggestion is better they never make a movie out of game or anime anymore, keep the beauty in their original place...at least this will not spoil my memory from the game or anime.

Some of them were still successful, Resident Evil is commercially success. I still want to watch some game to movie adaptation in the future ^^.

Final Fantasy does not truly count to me. It started off as a game and became an animated movie. You can consider it like Squaresoft making a final fantasy game with cutscenes. The problem with video game to movie concepts is the fact that the writers or directors will try to steer the movie away from the game (sometimes not intentionally) so that it can make some sort of sense to the viewing public who are not associated with the history of the title.

Then again another reason why they fail is because we fans hold our favorite titles in such high regard so its near impossible for them to make a true idealistic concept totally based of the world in our game. They try and do the best that they can but sometimes its never enough.

Honestly I believe the first scenario occurs more but I can not deny the second scenario either.

FF AC is like a full cutscene for me LOL.

And I agree with you that we put so much hope to movie adaptation so when it's not in our ideal area, it's failed.

Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children was a good game-to-movie adaptation.

It's a good movie. Some people might not considered it as a movie adaptation though, like Durant22 said.
