Imagine

Category: Game Community Perspective Game: Default Posted on Mar 13, 2008 9:04 pm

Couple weeks ago, I watch David Archuleta from American Idols show singing Imagine from John Lennon.  And I really get touched by the way he sing.  Couple days after that, I have my own version of that song in this lyric:

Imagine there’s no scammers

Everyone just playing

No spammers among us

Just enjoy the gaming

Imagine all the people

Playing just for fun

Imagine there’s no phishing

Everyone is so nice too

No worries when playing

And no beggars too

Imagine all the people

Playing in harmony

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the game world will be as one

Imagine there’s no killing

Just because of a game

No need for stupid slaying

Instead a friendship in game

Imagine all the people

Sharing joy in game

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the game players will live as one

(This lyric is made just for non commercial discussion, Imagine song copyright own by John Lennon)

I can still remember, my first day entering the world of Ragnarok Online, and an assassin was coming to me asking if I am new in there.   And I say yes.  He was then, giving me some red potions, giving advice on how to level up, and remind me nicely to whisp him when I have reached 2nd job, so that we can join as one guild.  I never ask him to that for me, but he seems like he really want to look for new friend.  We are now become real friend up until today.  I play the game and enjoy that kind of friendship with so many more people until the day has come that people are not just playing game for fun, but they start to scam each other, begging for money and powerlevelling, phishing, flaming, and other unpleasant act in MMORPG.  Trust become a rare thing in the world of MMORPG.  Fun is being ruined.  Friendship is becoming minor motivation.

I am now barely can find an MMORPG, without scammers, beggars, spammers, flammers in it.  One thing that I enjoy from playing MMORPG is a wide chance of having new friends and healthy friendship.  But what I found lately, is far from that.  When I try to level up my character, a player come and asking for some amount of money that I don’t have.  And I told him that I don’t have it.  Instead of leaving me peacefully, he keep shouting that I am a scammers.  What’s wrong with nowaday MMORPG community?

People are not so responsible compare to real life when it come to online game.  Because there’s no physical responsibility when you do crimes in online game.  It’s just a game.  Not to mentioned that people can make several accounts to represent a different character in game.  It’s about anonymous act.  My friend telling me that it is time that the online game has a justice court.  Another friend of mine saying, an ethic  school to teach people to be polite in online game is also needed.  I was laughing, but it seems like I’m not the only one that really miss the world of game that full of sincere friendship.

Sometimes, it is even extended to the game related site.  Look at how people flaming several best writers in MMOSite because they have a different opinions or saying something that attract others.  Instead of having a logical argument, they prefer to ruin the environment.

I am also sad that game that being used by wrong person, and has caused killing.  Game is just for fun.  Hope it never happened again.   Just like the lyric said:

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

Peace to all of you.

But even though after you said that, the thing still is that it is an escape from reality. And i know it's right on the money, it's still just that, even if it is fact that PKing is more fun to people...

But escaping reality and imaging your own life in that game isn't really that much possible. It has not so much to do with role playing, but that's another subject.

What i'm trying to say that there are several forms of playing the game, and what you just said is one of those forms.

Also, some players don't like PK, and avoid it like the plague. The free MMORPGs, allthough free is just some advert word, provide this. Well, what i have played. There will be PvP, but mostly not.

So yea, there are different ways to play the game.

You people just don't get it.

MMORPG aren't games of adventuring, exploration and heroic deeds. They are world-wide, enormous money-making machines. They encourage random, selfish violence, and virtual fascism (and hours, days, months of continuous play for that matter).

Let me put in simple words the facts about MMORPGs:

- They all share epic mythical stories (some well-constructed, some pure copy-paste cliché) which no real significance, i.e., they put you to kill terrible monsters who are no "real" (or should I say "virtual") menace to the world itself.

- The more time you expend playing, the more powerful you become (note that there's no "ability" involved in the process, just time), and more money the creators will earn.

- Reaching determined power level, they all offer the possibility of PK (the infamous Player Killing), who just allow some real powerful characters (which happen to be players who have spent months of playing, thus making the creators more rich in the process) to killing others for the fun of it. And that's the ultimate fun of these games, the player duels and virtual assassination.

So, if you are some guy who wants to try some MMORPG in search of emotion, adventure, and good deeds, what will you find? A game which consist in killing monsters in a repetitive fashion, who are no "real" (virtual) menace to the world... but reaching some level, you'll face the "real" evil of this "Fantasy virtual worlds": consagrated players who, solo or as a guild, kill other players for the fun of it. They happen to be the most powerful "heroes" in the land (given the time they had spent playing); as constant, faifthful, players, they have all the power and the might. They "rule" the world indeed. In a fascist way: Fight me and-or die. Join me or die.

They are the true "evil" of the game. And they, I repeat once more, are the most constant and dedicated players, who help to earn the more cash to the company involved. Don't forget that.

So stop searching for "adventure" and "heroism" in MMORPGs. They are designed for making money, attracting players with the exotism, adventure, and heroics of their made-up mythical landscapes... but in
the end, are nothing but virtual fascist states, where the evil are not some dumb monsters, but real world people who play the role of virtual fascist assassins. Thus making more rich the game creators. Remember
that.

u r rite, MMORPG is for fun! But no matter hw we try to change that fact, there r ppl who will do those ways you highlighted. The world is getting from bad to worst, not only in the MMO world. Dont give up coz you know there are people out there who stay thru to the fun in MMOs. And of course, like you, I am also a dreamer and I wish to join you too

Scammers, phishers, beggers, and power-levelers have existed for quite some time now. The only difference was that in the past, it was all based on 'overly populated' games (EverQuest, Ultima Online - for examples). The gaming world is not fit for peacefulness, as too many people end up using it as an 'escape' from whatever problems they're having in real life. So their spitefulness, anger, and frustration shows through their character(s).

Well-written, I admit. The song is a bit idealistic, but ey - that was the point.

First off, great job on the rewrite of that lovely song. Just reading it seemed to touch me in some sort of way. It made me double-think of what i've done to some players in MMOs and that I shouldn't have done it, and could've instead been a good sport. Secondly, I agree with you 100% on what you stated in your article. I may not have been around back in the older days since I was too young, but the fact of having a peacful community sounds like MMO heaven. I love this article, great job, I hope this will touch many people as it did to me. I will be one of those thousands who joins you as a dreamer.

i agree with you totally. I hate the scammers and the phishers and all the stupidity in MMO's now a days. That's mainly why I don't talk to people in games. I just ignore everything that is said to me. It's kind of mean to do cause you really never know who wants to be a friend and whose being a ****. Good Article and I like how u reworked the song :P
