Was High School Attack Inspired By Video Game?

Category: Crimes Game: Default Posted on Aug 26, 2009 8:32 pm

When I was reading a news from Gamepolitics that "A 17 year old student detonated two pipe bombs in a San Mateo, California high school on Monday before being subdued by faculty members", I just though of Zoey, the only and last beautiful thing over the whole disgusting zombie apocalypse of Left 4 Dead. As the picture I captured shows, she is throwing a pipe bomb.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the boy was wearing a bulletproof vest and was armed with an additional eight pipe bombs, a two-foot long sword and a chainsaw. Police said that the student planned to set off the bombs and then attack survivors with the other weapons.

Gadget blog Gizmodo wonders whether there may have been a video game connection:

If you're wondering why this is on Gizmodo—and you guys always do—it's because those weapons inherently remind me of movie and video game weapons. I'm not trying to say that video games cause violence or don't cause violence, but what I'm saying is that when a 17 year old man-child thinks he can corner his classmates while dual wielding a chainsaw and a sword probably played a lot of doom and zelda and didn't do very well in gym class, so would get tired very quickly.

Games can't be blamed for violence considering the fact that war, and violence were around before video games ever were.

Great another instable freak who feeds mediatic subjects to the UN or other politicians that are craving for publicity.

After taking psychology for GE req, these Video Game causes Violence Studies look like utter bullshit. How many Friends does he have?  How good of a student is he? How Tall is he(yea you can count that as a variable)? Does he eat alot of candy? How Social is he online and in public? Parent, are they too leanent or too rough on him? The neighborhood? The School? The punks at school? The list of variables go on and on and on.

History has had some of the worst psychological studies ever, one example was about women and marital problems.  The psychologist doing the study get 40,000 returns from questionaires she handed out, big number must equal good results right? 80% had problems, ok...Guess what she handed all the questionaires to Women Groups, Women Therapist(that work with women), and other groups that helped women...I wonder why 80% had marital problems......

Know what just ignore any video game connected with Violece type articles.  I know youre not saying there's a connection.  Its just that most psychology studies are ridiculous.

violence wasn't inspired by games ,  GAMES WAS INSPIRED BY VIOLENCE >

take GTA for example ,  without  70's and 80's crime  , GTA will never exist

lawl is it bad if i think thats kewl xD? I think it was violence inspired too, it's not like video games are the only violent things in the world.

Like after I watched shaun of the dead I had a sudden interest in making Molotov Cocktails

Btw how was he subdued by the staff while he was holding a chainsaw and sword?

Though i would never put it past anyone, an unstable mind is an unstable mind; with or without the help/inspiration of video games; you can't hold anything or anyone responsibly except the person who committed the crime.

Think about it, how many of use think of doing something and for some reason beyond our understanding; associate an act with something we've seen someone else do? all of us do that, that doesn't mean that we'll act on it, unless WE make the choice of acting it out.

So when you remove all the psychobabble and what-not, you have that simple choice, and it's always your's to make, no one else is going to take the blame for a choice you made.

WoW seriously? Honestly, if you weren't trying to make video games seem like the bad guy here, why'd you even mention video games in the first place? It just seems you are quite possibly trying to bring them into the crime equasion, but in a way where people dont flame you here. Thats usualy how it goes, even with speech.

"Oh this happned...BUT I'm not saying it had to do with this..or related to that...I'm just saying..."

and thats usualy how it goes. At any rate, I don't think this was game inspired. It was violence inspired. Simple as that.

I disagree with this entirely.

Pipebombs are not hard to make and can be extremely deadly. Just because some kid decides to make one and use it, why does somebody ALWAYS have to make the assumption that it was videogame inspired.

Sh**, I don't understand this. Videogames often take REAL - LIFE WEAPONS and incorporate them. Then when somebody else uses the weapon they assume that it was videogame inspired, and not inspired by the weapons themselves!?

I swear the media has a list of every weapon in every game, so everytime some kid from the age of 8-18 uses a weapon, they ask "Maybe this kid was inspired by....hold on lemme find the games that have AR15's in them.....I see! Maybe he was inspired by Counterstrike, Modern Warfare, Left 4 Dead...blahblahblahblahblah"
