Video gamer who killed mother sentenced 23 years to life

Category: Crimes Game: Default Posted on Jun 18, 2009 12:44 am

This guy, Daniel Petric shot his mother dead and wounded his father over a popular video game halo3 in last year, the reason he did this was because the parents took away the game from him. According to Fox 8 News Reporter yesterday morning the teen was sentenced, finally, 23 years to life.

Seems he doesn't deserve the hell ...Anyway here was the news report.

I hope you have noticed the declaims of the Defense attorneys (the following quotes)

Defense attorneys argued that Petric's youth and addiction to the game "Halo 3" made him less responsible for the shooting. They say he often played video games 18 hours a day with little food or sleep. They say he may have been so obsessed with the game, where players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth, that he didn't think death was real.

"The playing of the video games and the reality of shooting somebody in his case was blinded, it was merged," defense attorney James Kersey told the court. "He had no thoughts during this process. During this time, he was blinded that his parents might be dead, that they might never come back."

"His addiction was so strong, was running rampant in a tired, exhausted young man, that anybody or anything that stood between him playing the video game and not having his way was in peril," Kersey added.

Judge Burge addressed the issue of video game addiction during sentencing, and said that it was a factor in his final decision. He says he hopes more study will be done on the topic. (quotes from Fox8 News Report)

I agree on "During this time, he was blinded that his parents might be dead, that they might never come back", when I was 7 I played so much super mario that I intented go to the underground world by my bath's pipes. 7 times. I was blinded too..

Scratch up and snap the Halo 3 disk in his face! Oh, and smash that Xbox 360 as additional punishment! Man I'd like to see the look on his face.

That's utterly horrible. I can't believe this tard was deluded enough to actually shoot his own parents. Fken psycho! Halo 3 is a game, in real life you don't survive after getting shot in the head! He deserves that 23 years. Sick.

he is another victim of halo 3 and other crap shooting games...

they should ban those game and keep the fantasy ones, shooters makes people become aggresive.

also in fps, tps, etc. you use real guns so they make people feel like shooting someone in real life -_-

Come on xMisael his parents would deserve to go to jail? I don't know the full picture, whether his parents didn't educate him well enough, or the guy had some sort of mental problem, but I didn't see his parents kill him for playing 18h a day! Instead it's the other way around, and you think the victim should go to jail?

There's always a scale to things, his parents, his own mental problem, his anger levels, the game, all might have played a part in the incident, but one factor must had more influence than the others, and it's that factor we should criticise!

I'm a teenager and I hate to say this but why always blame it on the parents? The guy (not a boy nor teenager) is 23! Most his age would've finished university and looking for a decent job now, and he play games 18h a day? That is both amusing and shocking. Well even if his parents didn't educate him properly, the heck he have failed miserably with his life, and fell even worse when he commited this murder.

That man/boy/kid is 23 yrs old?  hes a douchebag for playing halo3 for 18 hours a day!  thats what happens to kids that  have mental issues like ADDs. They get too focused in playing the gamethat their minds are full of crap the game is filled with. And they think they're their characters in game that they would things that the chracters would do in real life, even to shoot with a real gun.

That guy must've been so aggressive his parents took his video games.  i think his parents were trying to make him clean the bathroom coz its so dirty, and he got distracted from the game that he was so mad he killed his parents. Poor people....

That bastard is lucky. Only being sentenced to jail. If you ask me he deserves to go to hell. Who would ever kill his own parents over a fuck!ng game. Doesn't know reality from fantasy is just an alliby his attorney is making. Look at him dude. It's more like he's the alien that he's been killing all day long.

taking away the game is the same as taking away the ability to play fotboll from somebody who likes it very much

Well first off games don't make people kill people. If someone kills someone becasue they did it in a game, or kill anyone partents or not becasue of games and or not being able to play games the games didn't do this becasue a person has to be capable to being with to kill someone. Now alot of factors could be in place here from either parents not being parents like they should and haveing those discussions of actions and reactions and the outcomes to happen for actions you do. Honestly some people will have more outside influance and even though at times the parents are to blame, sometimes the parents arn't to blame for it. I have seen people parent their kids and be there and all that and do what needs to be done, and kids still end up doing horrible things reason why is, just becasue your a good parent dosen't mean someone else is influanceing thier kids the same, and these other kids with a either do what they want or whatnot behavoir can also casue a bad influance in even the worlds greatest parents kids. But still I have a feeling this kid knew what he was doing and more than likey ploted it out and planned it, this didn't from all the reports seen on the net and all look like some sudden insanity case this was a " I am gonna get what I want" fit and planned out to shoot his parents wich resulted in his mothers death ( He shoudl be happy his fatehr is still a father to him and gives a crap. ) Point is games didn't make this kid shoot his parents it was his ignorance that did it, and teh fact his parents was taking that halo game away from him was a sign they were trying to keep probly a good influance on him as I personaly don't think kids should play games like halo sorry but anyone who playe's any FPS or any game with shooting and even actions that in life are illigal should have the common sense that its a game ( also some adults don't need to play these games either as you can see in some cases. ) This is how I think of it a

Key note he never got to play Halo 3, which is why he shot them in the first place, so the 18 hours of gaming were other games. He has problems making sound decisions and that was way before video games. All problems with this teen are in his head and his upbringing. The sentence, 23 years, is fair because he obviously can not relate to people in a healthy manner.

Obviously. I have played video games for a very long time. I'm an Adult now. I still enjoy spending lots of time on games. I go out. I do my day's work I come home and play video games. I go out and interact with society on the weekend when I don't have to work. If I didn't live down in the south I'd probably be more open to going out somewhere all the time. But I've lived here for a long time. I've done what's to be done. I think it's time I packed a bag and headed out west. But yea went off topic. They seem to always blame the video games. But I think parents should eat the blame too. I mean who's job is it to see that breaks are to be taken? Obviously it should be the parents. My mother and father did a fine job at controlling me when I was younger. If I misbehaved they would take my games away from me. I threw 'tantrums' cause of it. But I also learned a lot in life by being made to go outside and socially interact with my peer's. I mean are we headed towards the way Asian MMO's are controled (?) With time limit restrictions? Will they start adding "Fatigue" systems where we need to sign off for X hr's so that they can be sure we stood up, stretched our legs and eat/drink something? I feel that'll have a more negative reprucussion as opposed to a gainful one. In the end their would be Success stories and Complains none the less.

To sum it all up... Good job on the sentence he obviously doesn't need to be in the General Populace if he is incapable of differentiating a video game and event in real life. Sure games show kids that it's 'easy' to pull a trigger. But at the end of the day. When that child/adult/whoever has that gun... It's all down to a simple question with a simple answer. Yes or No. If you think about it everything we do boils down to that. Except the completely insane. :)

so wait... he didn't think death was real then what was he hoping to accomplish with a gun. thats bad logic hes using to defend him lol

To shoot your mother and father something has to have went terribly wrong. Still I think it went terribly wrong way before this guy started playing 18 hours a day.
